Poligise for the absence, but Allan has been visitin' with us for a couple of wonderful non-stop days of songwriting and playing. Last night we went out with some friends to catch a few acts, and saw a songwriter/blues guitar picker named Gary Vincent who just blew me away with his talent and style. (Allan says, "Hi, ya'll".) dawg

Blues Pickin Man (c) 2002
Truesdell and Bernard BMI

Went out with some friends
to catch a few acts.
They all had the talent
that I seem to lack.

Saw country, saw cowboy,
and even blue grass.
Then the blues man sat down
started kickin some ass.

His guitar would moan;
then he'd make it sang.
Black magic 'tween his fingers
and them guitar stings.

HE SNAPPED THEM STRINGS
LIKE RUBBER BANDS
HEARD A UNIQUE SOUND
I BECAME A FAN
WISH I COULD DO THAT
DON'T THINK I CAN...
LACK THE SOUL
TO BE A BLUES PICKIN MAN.

It won't just the playin'
his lyrics were fine;
more hooks in one song
than a delta trot line.

Had fun with his work;
he laughed with his songs.
Made me want to listen
the whole night long.

I came home and practiced
'til four in the morn.
Gave up the guitar
and bought me a horn.

HE SNAPPED THEM STRINGS
LIKE RUBBER BANDS
HEARD A UNIQUE SOUND
I BECAME A FAN
WISH I COULD DO THAT
DON'T THINK I CAN...
LACK THE SOUL
TO BE A BLUES PICKIN MAN.

Hi Dawg,
great read! I liked the delta trot line analogy makes me think of the old Mississippi delta blues style pickin' though I wouldn't pick up a horn , I would pick up a harp ( harmonica)

Lyric-wise and story-wise, this one is kinda slight, but OTOH, I don't have much in the way of nits. I'd say "His words were all fine"-- "lyrics" is a mouthful-- and I dunno what a Delta trot line is either, but that's no big deal. Decent job here overall, guys! I hope you're gonna be down there longer, Allan. I wanna see some more collabs by you guys! [Linked Image]

Hey man. Nuther good'en. Sounds very inspired and very inspiring. I know what ye mean bout what ye said bout talent. I hear some great songs and say "man I just cant write like that". I once was told "you aint sposed to write like that, you sposed to write like YOU". I still get blowed away by the outstanding talent I see and hear and wish it had been distributed around a little more evenly. Anyway this is very well written.

Hello Pam,

First for everybody who is unfamiliar with a trot line. It is a method of lazy, southern fishing, primarily for catfish. You get you a couple hundred foot length of clothesline and tie one end of it to a tree hanging over the river. Every ten feet or so, you put a piece of fishing line, a sinker and a hook. Bait the hook with rancid bacon, or stink bait. Every fifty feet tie an empty Clorox bottle on the line. Tie the other end to another tree hanging out over the water.

Check your trot line twice a day by jonboat. Most good ol' boys who run a trot line, run 4 or 5 of them.

Thank you for taking the time to read and respond.

Thank you Tug,

but remember, you only got to lug around one horn, harp players tote around a whole suitcase full of harmonicas, one for each key, different ones for blowing cross-harp, then you got your chromatic harps...besides,
harp don't rhyme with morn.<g>

Thanks for read and the kind words.

Afternoon Anth,

We are happy to have convinced Allan to stay an extra day. We just have to get him on a plane tomorrow in time for him to make his Friday night gig.

We have managed to get five blocked out, lyrics and music, that Allan will work on fine tuning and posting the audio for when he gets back Home.

It has been a fun time.

Actually this blues picker only lives a few miles from Bobbie and I and will be at the party. I think he is originally from Bob Young's neck of the woods, and they may know each other. I know the day after our party he has to fly to Chicago to play a gig. But I had never heard his style of play before and it is awesome.

Thanks for taking the time to read and respond. By the way, Allan played "Too Young" last night and it got a good response.

Sounds like Allan's had a real productive visit! Thanks for the great news about "Too Young". Was this at an open-mike night or something? Where was it?

Evenin' Roger,

I gotta tell you the truth, I didn't come away jealous so much as determined to work
harder and practise more. But there is a world of talent in this town.

Thanks for the read and the kind words.

Hey Gang!

dawg has responded to most of you all ready so I'll just say "thanks a bunch to everybody who's givin' a read".
I've played finger-style guitar for more years than I care to admit and this fella had a "pop-pull" thing goin' that's had me in another room most of the day today working on my licks.
There was also a fella playing who has a ton of cuts by major artists and has got to be King of the hook".

Thanks again folks and see ya in the funnies.

Evenin' Big Guy,

an I'll tell you straight up that I have never mastered either one, but Kenny "G" does not impress me near as much as this guy did.

Thanks for taking the time to read and comment. Both are appreciated.

No Anth,

It was not open mike. It was a songwriter (by invitation)night. 6 performers, including the guy who wrote "Unforgiven" for Tracy Lawrence....killer talent all the way through. We had lined it up for Allan a couple weeks ago.

That's awesome, dawg. But how'd ya pull the strings to get a guy from upstate New York into a big Nashville showcase like that? Gawrsh, ya just moved near Nashville and ya already got pull! [Linked Image]

No pull and no bull, Anth.

I know the guy has talent. I tell them he has talent. I tell them where they can listen to his work.

He sells himself.

No strings involved.

Hey all!

Back home in NY, with the snow and cold (sigh).
Some more of those shows will really help me. I'm getting a little too used to being a big fish in a little pond up here. At that "little" gig I was nothin' more than par for the course, it felt good.

Thanks a bunch for the read and words gang. I gotta tell you dawg and Bobbie are great hosts and fun company.

Take care, I'm going to crash for a few hours.

Allan
