Last song on my RPM CD. You may remember the earlier version of this. MP3: http://soundclick.com/share?songid=5196787 . Lyrics are a little nonsensical. I only mis-sang one word (I think). EDIT: Updated the mix based on Mike's vocal comments and Mark's mention of the "mono-ness" of it all. ******************************** Clap of Thunder© Emmrich/Leach 2009(v1) Rolling down this road just trying to make myself feel whole It hits me when I least expect it Like a shockwave to my soul (v2) Something big, something mysterious Not to be mistaken or explored It’s a feeling that can not be talked about But never will it be ignored (ch) Like a clap of thunder Echoing in my head Like a clap of thunder Making its presence felt (v3) Sometimes we need to get out To see what we can see It’s a path with no comforts When all that’s left is debris (v4) I went down to the place That I had dreamed about It was not what I expected But it hit me beyond any doubt (ch) Like a clap of thunder Echoing in my head Like a clap of thunder Making its presence felt (v5) Rolling down this road just wondering how my life will unfold and I know something’s gonna rise up and hit me Like a shockwave to my soul (ch) Like a clap of thunder Echoing in my head Like a clap of thunder Making its presence felt Kevin: Electric Guitar, Acoustic Guitar, Vocals PG Music/BIAB/RT: Drums, Bass, Piano, Acoustic Guitar, Electric Guitar, Saxophone

Hi Kevin,
Of course I had to listen to this one, love the sax. Also like the lyrics, and want to say I especially enjoyed your harmonies on verse 5 ( the rest too but that one was great)

Letha: Thanks for coming by. I put "sax" in the thread title just for you -- that way I would have at least one listener (LOL!).
Dan: Thanks for stopping by and listening. I have been enjoying the tunes that you have been putting up. There can't ever be too much music in the world.

Cool, great sounding production. Great feel to this song. I enjoyed the listen. Loved the electic guitar work.
The chorus grew on me every time I heard it, too.

Kevin,
There are places where the band is overwhelming your vocal. Maybe double tracking, or a little chorus with stronger compression settings. I've been using a free VST that mimics the "Abbey Road" method of "doubling", if you want I could give you a link to that freebie...
The songs enjoyable, as are your vocals, and the mix is pretty good too...Nice work!

I love the song but my only thoughts are that it was a lil too monophonic as a mix. I agree that the vocals are swamped by the music and maybe remixing a bit more stereo into the song would reveal the vocals better. When the song started, I thought immediately back to the 70's glam period and the sax certainly did the trick to make the song a bit more special.

The sax is a great addition, Kevin! Yeah, I think the vocal could be brought up some. I also think your vocal is good for this but maybe sing it with a little more ooomph. Cut loose a little more on it.... Easy for me to say - I don't cut loose very well Scott

Hey Kevin
Really cool tune. Kinda reminds me of early seventies Stones--Exile on Main Street or Sticky Fingers era. The sax is a perfect fit for this song--well done. I agree with some of the others--maybe bring the vocal up a little.
Enjoyed it Eric

Mark S.: Thanks for stopping by and listening!
Mike Z.: I thought the lead vocals were too loud so I kept cutting them back. I boosted them again, but I am not sure if I got them right. If they are too loud, they sound like they are "floating on top" and not part of the band. Maybe one day I'll get serious about mixing and mastering.
Mark C.: I mapped out where all the instruments were and re-arranged to maybe get a better "stereo" mix. Thanks for listening and commenting.
Michele: Hey Michele, I hope is well in your part of the world. Thanks for coming by.
Scott: Unfortunately, that's all the "ooomph" I've got! I just can't sing with any power at all (loud and full and the same time). Just the way it goes. It would be nice to hear a real rock voice do this, though.
Eric: I think Exile on Main Street is a great album -- maybe for next year's RPM, I'll an entire CD in that vein. Thanks for listening!

Well that sax sings just like a vocalist. In some music, such as this one these is a fine line between an instrument and a voice - on some level they both do that same thing is some songs.

Tom: Thanks for coming by -- that sax part is just BIAB following my chord changes. Sometimes it doesn't work, but in this case it seems to fit in just right.
I'm falling behind on my listening and commenting, but now that RPM is over, I can catch up!

Mr. Pickens: Nice to see you back!! I hope you're feeling well and have gotten all of your recording gear back out. Thanks for stopping by and listening. As I told Scott, that's all the "oomph" I got.

Hi Kevin,
So this is what they mean by uptempo and up beat? It is a toe tapper. It has a great overall feeling, lyrically, musically and spiritually. Very well done.

Brenda: Thanks a lot! Have fun at your "site that cannot be named" gathering. I'll be away on business for the next few days and then my nephew is the lead in the high school musical (Joseph and the technicolor dream coat thing), so I'll be away for the weekend also. Have fun and give us a good report.

Kevin It looks like you have BIAB figure out. You use it very well. This song rocks and it shows your talents. Even with BIAB you can't get a good song if you don't know music. Good work.
You have me thinking about BIAB for myself.

I like the sax on this. But it sounds a bit busy for my ears at present. I think it might be the bass. I think you've got a catchy chorus and the sax gives it a Springsteen-like vibe, but I think this should build, music wise to the chorus, so you have something that emulates the "clap of thunder" musically. Just some thoughts. I only have them once in a while.

Bob: Thanks for the visit and the listen. I enjoyed doing this one.
Bill: I am playing an acoustic and electric guitar on this one -- the rest is all BIAB. BIAB is a fun tool for those of us that are not in bands or can't afford (or don't see any need in) pro demos.
Wendy: I lost the master files for this song (and most of my 2008/2009 stuff) due to a hard drive crash. I might resurrect this one in a more "sparse" arrangement.

Vocally, it reminded me a bit of the band Vigilantes of Love. Give them a listen sometime -you definitely can capture that vibe. I thoroughly enjoyed this.

What a terrific groove you've got going here, Kevin! A really enjoyable listen. And of course, a backing track of Rob's can't go wrong either. Donna

Hi Kevin.. You really got a great sax sound out of BiaB on this. I agree it's hit or miss on their solos. Fun song. BiaB does muddy up the mix sometimes and that's the only thing that still needs improvement. The guitars are great. I found that copying BiaB to a midi file and sampling the midi in Reason really helps make the mix cleaner. It's still in my head. Loved it.

Tom: Thanks for the visit and the kind words. I haven't looked up that band yet -- but I will!
Donna: Rob's original track had a better groove (he great at that), but it had some defects in it. I did the best I could getting it into BIAB. Thanks for the comments.
Rick: Thanks for stopping by and giving it a spin. It seems to me that I should be able to get radio-ready demos out of BIAB with real tracks -- but I can't do it yet (ha, ha). I'll keep trying and keep doing the "real" stuff, too.

Kevin, I really loved this so much! Not too busy for me! It reminds me of the Stones with Sax! I loved each and every instrument in it, every one stood out, and your vox were good too! Just TOO COOL!

Michele: Hey there, I forgot about this one! Thanks for stopping by and giving it a listen. I'm still enjoying Don't Push My Button!
Polly: Hello, thanks for giving it a spin. Not as good as Slap on sax, but BIAB did OK here.
Calvin: Thanks for giving it a listen and leaving a comment.
Tom: I don't mind that comparison -- but you know he just has that intensity in his singing that I can't even approach!
Thanks for all the listening and commenting!

I have to confess that I'd misread the thread title as "Rock N Roll with Sex" when I first started listening to this track.
'Tis very Rolling Stones - which can never be a bad thing.
Not sure why 'Clap of Thunder' in the body of the song itself needs to be capitalised, but that's probably the Anglocentric part-time sub-editor in me objecting. Not a musical criticism.
I think that the vocals need to come up in the mix and perhaps a bit more sonic space could be given to each instrument via panning and EQ'ing, but it's generally pretty good as things are.

Steve: Easy mistake on the title! That capitalization is wrong. I've changed it -- thanks. Unfortunately this is one of these songs that I have lost the tapes on. I think I will re-do it in the future, but I will change it up (again).
Ricki: Thanks for the re-visit! Aren't you only doing uptempo, toe-tappers now?
Heather: Thanks for stopping by and giving it a spin.
Thanks to all for listening to this oldie.
