When inspiration goes on vacation, well, just have a little fun. They say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. Well, this isn't terribly flattering, but I do admire the artist I'm imitating. Name that artist. Shouldn't be too difficult for the radio listeners. No prizes, although, Erica, you are still ineligible. Just Another Guy You never had Much time for words So it took me by surprise When I heard that you referred To us as was, not is Yeah it cut me Like a bris It was just a week ago I was the one You used to roll All through the night That's why this Just don't seem right I could try and Coax you back But I don't know how I don't know jack So now I'm Just another guy Oh I'm just another guy I used to be the fool I used to be the tool That made you sigh But now I'm just another guy It doesn't seem To matter much You don't seem To miss my touch The way that I could make you melt Now every guy is there to help Twisted, torn, tossed aside Traded in before my time You were mine Now I'm Just another guy Oh I'm just another guy I used to be the fool I used to be the tool That made you sigh But now I'm just another guy Any time Every place Any guy Every face And I'm Just another guy Oh I'm just another guy I used to be the fool I used to be the tool That made you sigh But now I'm just another guy [This message has been edited by Michael Thomas (edited 02-13-2002).]

Well Michael this seems pretty inspired to me! Any time you use the word BRIS in a lyric that's being pretty darned creative! Yikes! The guys are gonna cringe at this one.(Unless they are a Rabbi of course ) Haven't had any radio listening time in a while so I don't have a clue who inspired this? Don't keep us guessing! Well written Michael. LOVED the: Twisted, torn, tossed aside Traded in before my time

Mike: Ooooh, I LOVE this! Don't know how many folks will get the bris line. First time I read it, I thought you repeated "I used to be the fool" twice in the chorus, then I noticed my mistake. I liked it better with the two fools. Aside from those tiny nits, I think this is really great. I just love the feel of it. Get off your butt and find some music for this one. If you don't do it, I will!! Erica

Hi ya Michael, I guess I need to start listening to the radio more. I have no clue who could have been the inspriation to this. I even cringed when I saw "Yeah it cut me Like a bris" but I get the meaning. Other than that it looks as though it sings pretty good Take Care Ria ------------------ http://angelfire.lycos.com/amiga/riassonglyrics

Michael T, Well now...kinda flows like "What I Really Meant To Say"...so it`s gotta be Cyndi Thompson. If not...I don`t have a clue either. Looks ok, cept for that "ouch-ie" bris line. Dan. ------------------ www.angelfire.com/music3/danolyrics

OK, Folks, I guess it's hint time, but to that in a minute... bama. I have no idea how that bris line came to mind, except that it's about the fiercest cut a guy can imagine, other than a Bobbitt cut. Thank god they don't wait til we're 12, huh? A memory best left buried. Erica. A Google hit will pull up hundreds of links for those who may wish to circum navigate their lack of knowledge of the subject. Since this is something of a parody, it's absolutely FULL of plagiarisms, so it's future is pretty limited, unless Weird Al happens along here and takes a liking to it. And, since it is a parody, "tool" kinda has an important role, tool, if you get the drift. Hey, you volunteering as my agent? If so, then we'll BOTH be liable to suit if this lands! Ria. Long time no here, er, hear! Cringed at bris, eh? Universal sentiment! Dano. Nope, not Ms. Thompson. Hope the bris line don't keep you from sleeping tonight. Now, for hints. Ever since I heard the song this is based on, I've wanted to take it and do a gender switch on it. The songwriter (she) has one big recent hit, her first CD, but lots of songwrites for other artists under her belt. She's blond. And here's her original lyric: You always had A way with words So you can just imagine When I heard You say she would Be your wife Yeah it cut me Like a knife It wasn't very long ago I was the one You used to hold All through the night Yeah so this just Doesn't seem right I could try and Win you back But I'm the one who left Guess I gotta accept That now I'm CHORUS: Just another girl Yeah I'm just another girl I used to be the queen I used to be the one Who rocked your world And now I'm just another girl Sure looks like You adjusted well For someone who swore There was no one else And I couldn't be replaced That's obviously not the case Peel away my coat of pride You're bound to see the sting Over some little ring Now I'm (Repeat chorus) Another time Another place Another girl Another face (Repeat chorus) Have fun! And thank you all for stopping by to play!

Is it Carolyn Dawn Johnson? I love her!! I have a huge amount of respect for a woman who will writing her way to the top by writing for other performers and end up singing her own songs. Saw her on the Grand Ole Opry and thought I was going to cry.. You did a terrific job with this... and the bris line, well, what the hell, it's a great line and makes your point with an exclamation!! nice writing! Tink

Well, damn, Mike. I thought you were just imitating a style, not writing a parody. I knew which artist you were talking about (and I was a good girl and didn't tell ), but I don't know that song, so I didn't realize you were robbing it. I'm bummed, cause I really like what you wrote. Guess I'll have to call Bruce Robison back and tell him you won't be needing him to do music for this, after all. Ricki

Tink wins!
Yeah, I love her too, Tink. Can't get enough. Barely a song on that CD I don't wish I had written. If lasers burned grooves in CDs like old styluses did to vinyl, my copy would be crap now.
Glad you enjoyed it! As you know - by now - I liked your post today, too. I think we we're caught in a simultaneous cross-posting! Later.

Hey, Erica. I thought you might have thought that. No doubt, once you figured what I was up to, you also knew who, too, since I'd already fessed up to you. Bruce Robison? Was he the E-street guy? Oh, no, that's right. That was the other one, Boss Man something or other. Different genre. Damn this early Alzheimer's! So, was that a hint, Ms Erica Agent lady?

I've barely even heard *of* Carolyn Dawn Johnson, but from the feel of this lyric and the original, she must be a country Alanis Morrisette. I really like this lyric, so I'm sorry to hear it's not actually original. For a so-called parody, though, that "bris" line is the only one that strikes me as funny. You could just change that line and make it a totally serious lyric, but since it's kinda plagurized, I guess there's no use.
Anyway, neat lyric here. I enjoyed it.

Nice little parody here.....that bris line gave me a horrible visual! I've never heard of the singer either.

Anthony. Now that's an interesting comparison, CDJ to Alanis. Ah, not exactly, at least not for me. I come away from CDJ's songs feeling pretty good but Alanis, well, I'm usually a little edgy after a round with her. Check CDJ out, Anthony. She's one of those country/pop stars that so many rail about. She can be sweetly sentimental, which makes her popular with the ladies (hell, they buy all the CDs anyway, right?), so some of the guys might gag pretty quick. Me? I'm a wuss for that kind of stuff - done well. Every song is a relationship. As for "parody", you're probably right. This is more a copycat tribute than parody, except for the bris and tool lines, and, summed up, that makes it pretty mild. The QSO line is hard for me to cross. And you're right, changing this won't get it to legitimicy. It's way too close to the original. But I'm glad you enjoyed it!
And Blake. You, too. Check CDJ out. And wipe that visual out of your head. It will do you absolutely no good whatsoever! And, if that thought should rise up unbidden at the wrong intimate moment, well, that could be a REAL problem....

Well, I didn't know this was a parody. i don't think I've heard the original. I liked the bris line. It sounded wry to me. I like dark humor and irony. Now I find out it's a parody. Pooh. Write a new melody and make it your own song.

It's a shame this is a parody, 'cause I think it kicks butt!

Thank you, Jean, for your comments. I agree, pooh! Strong words, eh? But - most of it - does belong to somebody else. Melody change won't get me out of that, I'm afraid. Alas. But thanks again.

Oops, Allen, forgot you there. Yeah, bummer. I like how it came out, too. But it was good practice! I haven't had an original idea in a couple of weeks, so this, and helping out in critiques, is at least keeping the edge from going too dull. Thanks for your succinct review!

Hi Michael, This was a great effort! Cept for the bris...have no idea what you meant. I like to write like this every now and then too...keeps the creative critter going in a good direction. I completely love the chorus...so much like a guy...ha I got a chuckle...nice writing. Thanks for the read. Pam Hurley

And thank you, Pam, for coming by! Yeah, taking a "hit" lyric and rewriting it is great exercise, and more than a little fun, too. As for bris, look it up in Google, like I suggested above. Unless you're just kidding me about not knowing, that oughtta suck the breath right out of you! It does us guys!
