The surgery is underway, it will likely last between 3 and 5 hours, with the first incision made 40 minutes ago and all is well so far. His momma is in tears, afraid and hopeful, anxious and happy all at the same time.

Hey, I just talked to his mom, they are taking him out of ICU already, he is going to a private room and will only be hooked up to the IV! He's an amazing little guy and is doing very well. There was a little concern yesterday about his heart rate, it was 170, but today it's 150, right where they wanted it, so he's on his way!!!
Thank you all so much for the prayers and well wishes, it's amazing how much positive energy plays a role in healing!!!

He's eating, off all tubes, monitors, etc. He's just a baby in a crib, and a sleepy one, at that. He's gotten sick, they gave him the wrong formula and then some pain med, which didn't sit well with him. He does have fluid around his heart and lungs, but that's somewhat expected, now he's going to be on meds to flush the fluids, and watched carefully for signs of pneumonia, but might actually get to come home this weekend. YAY!!!

Sounds like all went well, Caroline - but I know firsthand it's really traumatic to go through. My oldest had an atrial septal defect (hole between valves) repaired at age 8. Nobody noticed the murmur before then, but it had always been there.
She's 18 now and doing great. Her heart is just fine. Off to BYU-Hawaii Jan. 1 to start pre-med. She wants to be a medical examiner/forensic specialist.

As of yesterday evening, he had smiled, for the first time since the surgery on Tuesday. He has fluid on his left lung, but they are planning to drain it. He wasn't eating well, but he is still fairly medicated for pain, so that may have something to do with it. He's on meds to get the fluids off, but hoping he won't have to be put back on an IV. I hope he does better today. The third day after surgery is always the worst, so maybe he'll start to perk up today.

Caroline,
I have been so involved with my own problems recently, I neglected to offer my best wishes towards your nephew's surgery. I am praying for his complete and total recovery with no lasting problems. I have heart problems myself so I can definitely relate to this. God bless you.

Everything is going well, he goes for a follow up on Thursday, but so far, everything is wonderful!!! Caroline:I was glued to each of your messages as I read through them today. Kept getting more and more worried as I came closer to the end. Didn't want to get to the end, but it ended joyfully and I'll say this: with all the positive energy sent his (and Your) way, how could it have ended any other way! Antonio: Way to go you tough little tiger!! Paul

Paul, thank you. He is a tough little tiger! He's been trying to turn over and pull up. He's doing so well, so much has changed about him since last week. His breathing is no longer labored, he has such good coloring, he's sleeping better, more content, and is well on his way to healing.
I agree, with all the well wishes and prayers sent his way he had no choice but to do so well. He's a beautiful little guy and he's got his momma's strength. Still a long road, but made much easier for him with the special staff at Children's in Dallas!

I went to see him yesterday, he looks so good. The incision is tiny, long but very thin, and the chest tube scars will likely be unnoticable. He was napping when I got there, and woke up with smiles on his face. He looks so goo, he is breathing so well, no stress, just looks like the sweet little guy he is. He's always been a pleasant baby, but looked so much more peaceful yesterday.
My sil said to thank all of you for the prayers and well wishes again, she feels so much relief and said she appreciates everyone taking time to think of them.

Kids are so resilient.
When my daughter Kate was three, after her second open heart surgery she was in the recovery room. We were allowed to see her about three hours after she came out of the operating room because she was conscious and asking for us. We went to see her and she had seven wires embedded in her chest, and a drainage tube into her chest, plus a tube down her throat and a tube on her nose.
She was barely whispering but asked if she could get up, and we said no, she needed to rest, then she said with a little more strength that she wanted to go to the playroom at the hospital, and again we said no. Then she started getting irritated and said she wanted to go to Chucky Cheese (where we had taken her just before her surgery) and again we said no. That was more than she was going to tolerate, so she suddenly jumped to her feet and leaped off the bed into my arms screaming, "I want to go to Chucky Cheese NOW!" The nurses came running in a panic and told us to leave immediately while Kate threw a huge fit screaming and crying. About four hours later we were allowed to see her again and all tubes and wires were removed while a nurse sat there brushing her hair and she was sitting up acting like a little pampered princess, but very calm. They told us if we thought she had a fit when we left, we should have seen her 45 minutes later when she threw a bigger fit. They realized that if she was that strong already, she did not need the tubes and wires and they were more of a danger to her than an aid.
Kate was not normally a little brat who throws tantrums, she was/is normally a very sweet girl who is usually calm, good-natured and smiling, but surgery meant she had no control over her surroundings and the only way she could have some measure of control was to take it back with her behavior. It is still amazing to me that she could muster that much energy after what she had just gone through!

Jack, that's an amazing story. I love to hear how resiliant kids are. They are certainly the ones we should all aspire to be like, strong and getting over things, that's so cool!!!!Your daughters story is inspiring!
The baby has a clear x-ray, he has no sign of infection and has been released from the hospitals care to his cardiologist in Shreveport. He was an amazing little guy, barely cried, even during the nearly 4 hour drive, there during the finger pricks and back again. He was so happy and content the whole way. He's ready to get back to life as usual, besides the trips to the store, still under germ watch, but that's gonna be for a few more weeks.
