I'm goin' to Nashville next week! So I have one evening-maybe two all to myself. Where should I go and who should I see, if you were me?
I know, I know. You don't hear from me forever and here I am ALL the time this week! I truly appreciate all of you right now.

Well, See the Country Music Hall of Fame. Visit your PRO if you have one. Maybe go by NSAI and get any information you can use. Go to an Ernest Tubb Record Store and maybe buy a CD or two.

You CAN suffer through all of the tourist trauma if you really want to duck and dodge those crowds, but in my honest opinion, staying around to see and hear the raw live music that is played on every street corner along Broadway and 2nd Ave on Friday and Saturday nights...
I can also take you to a really killer drum circle.....

All the one's mentioned so far. Maybe open mic at Douglas Corner Cafe on tuesday. The Opryland hotel is pretty cool. Wander around music row. If you get tired of the twangy stuff, check out BB.Kings on 2nd street or The Bourbon St Boogie Bar in Printer's Alley.

I don't know how the Bluebird is now, but as far as playing there, with all the people signing up, it often happens that all a first timer gets is a ticket thingy guaranteeing them that they can play the next time.
So it's not necessarily the place to go if you want to perform and you're only in town for a week.

What hotels are around Omnisound studios that are considered a safe area? Would I walk around these places at night?
Should I get a taxi from the airport or do I need a rental car in Nashville?
I will have to visit NSAI.
I write but I don't play. I guess I can't take advantage of any of the venues you are telling me as a performer. But, I do have to go to the bluebird as a spectator! If there are any blues open mics with a backing band, I could do some blues standards. Got any of them down there?
Thanks for the help.

Hi Monica,
The Best Western Music Row is not too far away. They have the Hall of Fame Lounge connected to them, and have regular writer's nights and bands, often visited by famous writers. I'd get a shuttle from the airport, there's most likely a shuttle to the Best Western, if not, maybe a rental car would be almost as economical. The area is safe in the daytime to walk around, Omnisound is not a very far walk from the Best Western. Like any other city, I wouldn't recommend walking alone at night.
You'll be walking distance from NSAI also, and a short cab ride from Broadway, where you'll find Tootsie's, Robert's, Legends, and other nightspots with surprisingly good bands. Depending on the weather, you'll hear the street musicians there, some of them are also surprisingly good.
The Bluebird is a few miles away, a short cab drive.
I don't know of any blues open stages currently. You can check the Nashville Scene, which is a free newspaper and should have a few racks full at the hotel. Also, the pickers at Omni Studio may have some suggestions.
Have fun, I'm not playing in town this week or I'd recommend coming out and singing some blues. Nashville's a wonderful place, and especially so for musicians and songwriters.
All the Best, Mike
You've got to know your limitations. I don't know what your limitations are. I found out what mine were when I was twelve. I found out that there weren't too many limitations, if I did it my way. -Johnny Cash It's only music. -niteshift Mike Dunbar Music
