i'm trying to discern some information.
while surfing on youtube I stumbled across a video of a technique
for transposimg advanced Jazz chords into different keys without having had to play the chord before in that key. called by the author as "Picture Chords".
It uses the concept of surrounding the note of the key you want the chord in. with certain intervals to the left and to the right of the object key note.
He sells a coures of many concepts but one small section on a DVD
touching the subject for $60.00. So i've been searching the web trying to nail down this technique because it would greatly enhance me and my sons playing.
So if anyone has any tips or can steer us in the write direction it wpuld be greatly appreciated.
P.S. you guys always come through somehow anyway

Sorry I am not a very good piano player but might be able to help. There are many software studio programs that will transpose recordings both audio and MIDI and most decent electronic keyboards have this function built in. So what you play in real time as an example say in C comes out as in A.

I do know that some advanced jazz chords are notoriously difficult to transpose. I have charts for most chords and there are a few sites that list various chords using diagrams. try a google it might work. or just simply make your own chart by counting out in steps the difference in semitones for each note.

Thanks but that wont quite work because I'm playing with singers who are not proffessionals maybe sometimes maybe 5 one after another and they never sing the same song in the same key also useing advanced harmony enhances thier performance and experience so I need to do it on the fly and sometimes arrange it on the fly.

Do you need to play such complicated jazz chords if you are backing amateurs who cannot stay in key. My advice keep the backing simple so they can easily follow. Whenever possible give an intro so they start in the key you want to play in. Pick simpler songs to play that are also easier for amateurs to sing.

well the truth is they are mostly congregational church singerse they dont know or care if they can stay in key or even sing so the more help we can give the better for everyone.
Trust me our musicianship is tested on a regular basis and we have managed to even improvise or compose songs with just a few lyrics and pull together a melody some of the songs arent wriitten down anywhere. so sometimes we have to real them in then let them out as smoothly as possible. dont cry for us its fun and challenging (smile) what you suggest is always our fall back position.
Sometimmes we come up with some stuff that will enhance the service better and we can enjoy makeing the music also

I was viewing the post here last night about the greatest pianist to study.
I only new and recognized one that was Chick Corea.
So I copied all the names and looked at clips of them on youtube.
I discovered Bill Evans he sounds and plays like whst I hear in my heart.
I watched five clips from him called the Universal mind of Bill Evaans Hosted by Steve Allen He was interview by his own brother.
Une bit of advice he gave enlightened my an smacked me across the head.
It was that to improvise correctly you break the monumental task into small steps then anaylaze experiment explore them until your subcon mind takes them over. and then move on to the next level of exploation until you can instanly play what you feel inside at any given time harmonically. So even if I find the technique for picture chords or create it myself or further develope it. I will still attempt this proverb.
"How do you tunnel thru a mountain with a spoon. Patience"

You can't go wrong with Bill Evans. Two others you should really get to know are Fats Waller and Art Tatum, two other masters from an earlier generation. Art Tatum may have been the best of them all. Fats happens to be one of my personal favorites.

I thought that I saw some software a couple years back to where a note could be played and made in to any style.
It would benefit me since I have faltered trying to figure out theory.
But I do not like taking shortcuts.
I have my own artistic visions of everything I am inspired by and want to learn how to better pull that off. Though that may not be the proper method either.
I'm looking at the song in my head.
I have looked at the music theory forum here to try and learn more about certain styles.
Some members have access to material, it blows my mind what some of the members find with what I am looking for.
I wish I could help more and knew what that software is I am talking about.
But I am sure I am not the only one on the net that has seen it.

Wish you the best to teach your son.

EDIT:
I just came across an old thread in the music theory forum about notation software.
If that could help in finding the notes at all.

Listen thank you very much, I see we think a like when it comes to interpreting our music, nor am I ashamed to use software to help me get the music across as long as I dont use it as a handycap. So I'm gonna go over to the theory forum. and thanks for pointing me in these directions I'll just do a search in a plain english search engine like ask.com and see where it takes me.
Thanks again
