Hi Folks,
Ah... October is here. Probably my favorite weather month of the year. Sweatshirt weather. Leaves falling. Football. Cool nights and nice days. All ending in Halloween. Which brings me to my thought.. why is it that we have so little Halloween music? It's a fun Holiday with characters and mythology and moody settings. But so few do more than some special effects or novelty monster mash type songs. So where are all the great Halloween songs?
If you know of any, link them here. Or how about going out and writing one? Perhaps this needs to be a JPF challenge? An album worth of Halloween songs from all the regulars?
Thoughts?

I like to think I've brought plenty of creepiness into the world. My gig schedule always seems to pick up this time of year.

Hey Brian,
I'm pretty sure Joe W. just had a scarey one (about the plight of Roumanian Vampire Babies!), so that could be a start.
Anyhoo, I'm due for a challenge anyway, so let me go kick one off over there. Haven't got a song myself, yet, but tonight I'll see what I can whip up!
Thanks for the idea, Beth
P.S. October's my favorite month too! Did you know that October 6th is statistically proven to be the most "common" birth day? You figure, do the math, and it takes you back to the Holidays, soooooo. Incidentally, my brother was born on October 6th, and I have three other friends with that same birthday too!

Even though I'm pretty sure JM was not writing about Halloween I think this is the best Halloween song to date. jm People are Strange - Jim Morrison People are strange when youre a stranger Faces look ugly when youre alone Women seem wicked when youre unwanted Streets are uneven when youre down When youre strange Faces come out of the rain When youre strange No one remembers your name When youre strange x3 People are strange when youre a stranger Faces look ugly when youre alone Women seem wicked when youre unwanted Streets are uneven when youre down When youre strange Faces come out of the rain When youre strange No one remembers your name When youre strange x3 When youre strange Faces come out of the rain When youre strange No one remembers your name When youre strange x3

Lyrics, huh? Here's the lyrics to one of my two favorite Hallowe'en songs--"Another Man Done Gone." Shel Silverstein apparently wrote it (he did a lot of strange stuff besides children's books), and Bobby Bare made it famous.
Joe
MARIE LAVEAU Performed by Bobby Bare Written by Shel Silverstein and Baxtor Taylor
INTRO (TALK): The most famous of the voodoo queens that ever existed Is Marie Laveau, down in Louisanaa There's a lot of wierd, ungodly tales about Marie, She's supposed to have a lot of magic potions, spells and curses....
[A] Down in Louisana, where the black trees grow Lives a voodoo lady named Marie Laveau Got a [D] black cat's tooth and a Mojo bone And [A] anyone who wouldn't leave her alone She'd go [E] (growl) another man done [A] gone.
She lives in a swamp in a hollow log With a one-eyed snake and a three-legged dog She's got a bent, bony body and stringy hair If she ever seen y'all messin' 'round there She'd go (growl) another man done gone.
And [D] then one night when the moon was black [A] Into the swamp come handsome Jack A [B] no good man like you all know [E] (TALK) He was lookin' around for Marie Laveau.
He said Marie Laveau, you handsome witch Gimme a little a little charm that'll make me rich Gimme a million dollars and I tell you what I'll do This very night, I'm gonna marry you Then It'll be (growl) another man done gone.
(Same chords as in verse 3) So Marie done some magic, and she shook a little sand Made a million dollars and she put it in his hand Then she giggled and she wiggled, and she said Hey, Hey I'm gettin' ready for my weddin' day.
But old handsome Jack he said goodbye Marie You're too damned ugly for a rich man like me Then Marie started mumblin', her fangs started gnashin' Her body started tremblin', and her eyes started flashin' And she went (growl) another man done gone.
So if you ever git down where the black trees grow And meet a voodoo lady named Marie Laveau If she ever asks you to make her your wife Man, you better stay with her for the rest of your life Or it'll be (growl) another man done gone.

The perfect Halloween Song is "John's Garden" by Peter Mayer which takes the viewpoint of a pumpkin. It is one of my favorite songs of all time.

Hey Brian,
I started the challenge, but it seems like those aren't set up to appear in the What's Going On box? If that's the case, that's a shame, b/c people will have to make a point of GOING there, as opposed to being reminded of it every so often.
Anyway, just food for thought, as we work our way thru this new forum....
Thanks.. Beth

Peter Mayer is a multiple JPF award winner.. but I don't recall that particular song. Which album was it on Joel?
Beth, I can change that... you have to manually add new boards to that feature.
As for everyone else, post your own examples as well as others... I have to think that some of you have written (or can write) a really fun Halloween song!

Here's a goodie...it's actually a kind of gruesome, but hey, it's Halloween coming up!
This is the version performed by Gillian Welch and David Rawlings
Caleb Meyer
Caleb Meyer your ghost is gonna wear them rattlin' chains But when I go to sleep at night don't you call my name
Caleb Meyer lived alone 'mong them hollerin' pines Made a little whiskey for himself sup it up to pass the time One day at the back of my house, Caleb come around He yelled my name til I come out, no one else around
Caleb Meyer your ghost is gonna wear them rattlin' chains But when I go to sleep at night don't you call my name
Where's your husband Nellie Cane, where's your darlin' gone Did he go on down the mountainside and leave you all alone Yes my husband's gone to Bowling Green to do some business there Then Caleb threw that bottle down and grabbed me by my hair
He threw me on the needle bed across my dress he lay He pinned my hands above my head and I commenced to pray I cried "My God I am your child, send your angels down!" Then feeling with my fingertips the bottle neck I found
I threw that glass across his neck fine as any blade And I felt that blood run fast and hot 'round me where I lay
Caleb Meyer your ghost is gonna wear them rattlin' chains But when I go to sleep at night, don't you call my name!

Brian-This is the Folk John Mayer from Wisconsin or Minnesota not the Jazz one from elsewhere. "John's Garden" is on one of his early albums something like "Billion Year Spree" or "Million Year something or other". It is on the same album as one of my other favorite songs "Holy Now", basically what I consider my two favorite songs of his are on the same album.

Joel,
You said Peter Mayer originally.. so is it John Mayer or Peter Mayer? Peter Mayer is the guitar player for Jimmy Buffet and is a multiple JPF Award winner.
