Actually no... and it's not because of his political party. I will tell you who I thought gave, by a large margin, the best speech I've heard so far this season: Bill Clinton. And I don't even like Bill Clinton. But his speech did what the candidates don't seem to ever do.. it set out some specific themes and goals and plans and was quite inspiring. He really showed up Barack in his own convention. Again, this is coming from someone who doen't like Clinton... but it was a great and inspiring speech which should have set both Biden and Obama up for even higher levels.. but Obama seemed to give a predictable and remanufactured speech, using, by his own admission, the successful speeches of those who had come before rather than blazing his own trail. That was pretty unfortunate. He had the perfect venue and set up to do something truly historical.
I think that the party faithful probably got what they wanted, and the Republicans probably hated everything about it.. but us in the middle.. I am not sure we got much out of it at all. It seemed politics as usual and I really thought Obama WAS above all of that.. perhaps he listened too closely to his handlers.

As usual, it all sounded good but will he or can he put it all or any of it into practice? If so how? Basically it was a staged Superbowl halftime show in spirit.

When the stakes are as high as a presidential election, it is truly rare for anyone to take risks and venture into unknown territory. One false move and you're dead. And for the same reason, I don't expect to hear a major label put a lot of money into marketing an artist who is doing something brand new.

Well, Clinton didn't do anything new or surprising.. but he gave a great speech.. seriously.. if you put them side by side, Clintons short speech blew Obama's long speech away I thought... but perhaps Obama fans will strongly disagree. I was annoyed that he listed a lot of "things" he was going to do, but no where has he explained HOW he'll do them (and I checked his website and did google searches and there's no details to be found). That left me rolling my eyes that it's just rhetoric.
That's not to suggest McCain hasn't done the exact same thing.. he has.. neither candidate has come forward with details they can be held to.. both are slippery and non commital and use typical rhetoric.. I think we may find out more from Biden and Palin than we ever will from the main candidates.

Brian, Bill Clinton is the peffect politician, orater, and actor. He has the talent to not need a telepromter, only a few notes to remind him of what to say. Bill Clinton is the perfect used car salesman. That is part of his appeal. That does not make him a great man, and I know that you know that. Obama had his chance last night with a dramatic backdrop to convince the Nation that he is the answer to all of our ills if we only vote for him (and Biden) to hold the highest office. What has Obama ever said that was inspiring? Ben

Bill Clinton may not be a great man, but compared to George W Bush he is GOD. If we vote for the GOP again, we deserve what we get, especially considering who McCain chose for Veep. OMG!

Well Ben, I think you view that through Republic filters and that's fine. His speech was okay in delivery.. and it certainly pleased the party faithful.. but I really don't think he pulled many undecideds his way. He may not have to do much with his huge following... and perhaps playing it safe was the right political strategy.. but I really hoped we'd have a brand new iconic moment that would be replayed 100 years from now.. but it was no where close..
I sort of see this, at this point, as the Patriots and Giants.. McCain is the Giants.. no one thinks he has a chance.. he's barely in the "playoffs" and everyone counted him out. Obama is like the Patriots.. perfect.. undefeated (though Hilary would disagree) and unbeatable.. it really has that whole vibe.. I think it's really interesting that people are comparing Sarah Palin and Barack Obama for experience oblivious that she's the VP and not the Pres candidate. Perhaps it's because they think they can make the argument that Barack is more qualified.. I disagree, but at least it's valid turf for a discussion.. but you can't even have the discussion comparing him to McCain.. I think some folks might figure that out...
I am still not sure who I will vote for.. but I am definitely leaning a little towards McCain and Palin right now... I want to hear Palin talk a lot more (I've heard plenty of the other 3 involved). I am really curious to see if she's really up to all of this... her debate with Biden should be very telling.. Biden is as seasoned a warrior as the Democrats have.. if she can even begin to hold her own against him, she might be a future president regardless of what happens with this election.

I missed Clinton's speech - dang, I got up on here to kill some time and by the time I went back to CNN, he was done. Who knew Clinton could talk for such a short time. I did watch Obama's speech - I found it to be one of the most inspiring political speeches I have ever seen. I hope people start listening more to him and less to others talking about him. Actually, I heard that 38 million saw his speech so there is some hope there... He gave as many details as any politician does in a speech - if any were to give more, they would put the audience to sleep.... I like Joe Biden better now than I did a week ago. I'm not sure he'll be a great debater though. His heart is in the right place but he sometimes puts his foot in his mouth.... Scott

Biden would not have been my choice but then it wasn't mine to make. Is it enough to make me not vote for Obama? No. Something could happen, I suppose, in the next 60 days to make me change my mind - but over the past few months, Obama has been looking better to me and McCain worse. For me this election is coming down to voting for a party whose policies might not work versus voting for one whose policies will not work. At any rate, we'll still be making music after the election - no matter who wins... Scott

Ben,
The only thing that disturbs me about all this political discussion is that everyone (and probably me too) already had their minds made up 10, 20, 30 years ago on how they were going to vote and it doesn't really matter who is running. All I care about is a) re-establishing preeminence in manufacturing, b) maintain our agriculture output levels, c) finding someway to not be slaves to middle eastern oil, d) do something about the deficit and debt and e) slow down the human input to global warming (no matter the actual cause of global warming).

No, I have heard the same tired old speech (or excerpts) from FDR to present. It is just re-arranging the deck chairs on the Titanic. I think Jimmy Carter was going to fix things. You would think, after some 70 years of FDR'S New Deal the problems would be fixed by now. Barrack talks about change. What change would that be? Reversing all the social programs that seem to get worse every year, and we need to do more, according to the (mostly) democrats. I think all I heard was more and more of the same. I don't think that's change.
Bill Clinton? I knwe practically nothing about Bill Clinton until he became President. After careful examination all these years it is most appearent that Bill Clinton doesn't know which end is up. But he did say, "We could give you a Tax Break, but you wouldn't know how to spend it" Basicly he turns my stomach.
But Bill isn't on the Ticket any more than President Bush is. Clinton was the recipent of all the work of Ronald Regan and the ending of the cold war. And he thinks of course he should still be President. I don't know if Hillary was defeated because of Bill's antics but I wouldn't be surprised.
I do like McCain's pick for VP. She is the same age, as posted elswhere as the Bard of the Board?? and my daughter.

Anyone who thinks that the major issues in this election are abortion and gay rights should be declared too stupid to VOTE. NOTEW that I am not personally attacking anyone here.

McCain's decision to select a Conservative Christian for VP removed any doubt I had. The far right doesn't have near the cout it had four years ago. That was obvious when it tried to flex its muscles in the Terri Schiavo affair and failed miserably. McCain is too old and too much like Bush for me. THIS COUNTRY HAS HAD MORE THAN ENOUGH BUSH FOR A LIFETIME. We need to bring the troops home NOW and McCain won't do that. This election is not going to even be close. OBAMA IN A LANDSLIDE.

Looks like to me, we're all dressed up with no place to go! Neither party has nominated a real leader possessing Presidential Timbre. The difference between parties has become very narrow. Both are willing to sacrifice everything this great country once stood for... in order to remain in power. I'm sick and tired of talk. I want action. Flat Tax or no tax. A protected border. It's not about Mexican workers sneaking across the Rio Grande... it's about the next group of Mohammed Atta's ready to kill innocent people. It's not about Global Warming... not that we don't need to do whatever we can to reduce it... but just who do we think we are? The Man upstairs has handled weather and glaciers quite handily without our puny efforts.
I want a system where we have a say in who gets nominated provided they have the credentials for the office. I'd rather see a congress made up of people "drafted" from the public at large (naturally with qualifications... and willing to serve) 'cause all this voting and re-voting and chad-counting is becoming a waste of time. We need the elections completed in less than 30 days. Then maybe the rumdum networks would begin reporting the news (here and abroad) without trying to put their "spin" on everything. Then I want to see the networks and big media and Microsoft busted up into little, independent organizations with less control and more credibility.
Finally, we need a comprehensive energy policy with real incentives for new inventions and discoveries. We need to gradually eliminate Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae and get housing back in the hands of the free market and away from big governement.
Let's hope we can get these two poor excuses for Presidential Candidates to stop bashing each other and start telling us how we're gonna get our Chestnuts pulled out of the fire!
Of course I'll run... but only if I can be King!

The sad truth is that our present system makes it impossible for anyone to not be dragged through the mud and made to look like a complete fool. Even jesus Christ himself would come out smelling like poop if he decided to run for president of the USA. Obama is a hundred times better candidate than McCain is. I think that the USA is finally sick of letting the far right dictate to them and will put them back in their place in November.

I actually thought Hillary gave the best speech of all, although I only got to see snippets of Bill's and Barack's. It wasn't full of rhetoric like the rest of that evening's speeches. And, she even had a great joke (the one about the twin cities and Bush/McCain.) I was never a fan of Bill Clinton's, but I have concluded I must give the man his dues, in hindsight he did a pretty good job as President. I voted for Bush, hoping he would be like his Dad, but his biggest blunders have been him trying *NOT* to be his Dad. All I can say about the Bush years is: mostly what a huge disappointment and it didn't have to be. He has some really good instincts on a few things, and he has moderated and done some top notch things recently. But he listened to really bad advice (Chaney and Rumsfield) on big issues that will haunt us for awhile, and again, he tried way to much *NOT* to be his Dad. Plus, he is leaving us with a HUGE budget deficit. Clinton left with a budget surplus. If you want to read a really good assessment of the Bush years, from one of my favorite writers at Newsweek, check out this article: http://www.newsweek.com/id/151731

Speeches for leaders are greatly written sentences to make it appear to be said by a great leader.
Speeches are one thing. Future action and truth are another, sadly, for most times.
Bush once gave a great speech about getting Bin Ladin. How'd that go?
Not since MLK and Kennedy have great speeches added up that much.
It was a speech!

I always find it funny to see someone justify the lousy behavior of their own guy/gal by pointing out similar lousy behavior by the other guy/gal. That's a fundamental problem the 2 party system has. People attack others while excusing their own for the same behavior. It's what little kids do in the sandbox when something bad happens and they have to go run to mommy. Mommy's response is usually "well.. if those other bad kids jumped off a mountain, would you jump too?"
Bad behavior is bad. Period. It doesn't matter if other people are ALSO bad. It doesn't excuse it or make it go away or justify it. Let's get rid of ALL the bad people in office, regardless of their party. Sarah Palin actually did that in her own party. I don't love some of her beliefs, but I certainly love that about her. She's DEMONSTRATED it and her entire career hasn't just been a set up to run for President. She's just been getting stuff done. That's what we need. So far, of the 4 top ticket names, she's the closest to the type of person we need. If those qualities exist in others, let's hear about them.

As far as the original topic of this thread, Obama's speech didn't influence me one way or the other. At this point, unless something major comes out, I pretty much know who I'm voting for (or to be more precise, who I am voting against.)
I was impressed by both of the Clintons' speeches. I sincerely wish that Bill Clinton was eligible for a third term. Barring that, I was a supporter of Hillary Clinton, even though she wasn't my first choice in this go-around. For the record, Evan Bayh was my first choice, followed by John Edwards. Yes, I know there there is a sex scandal with Edwards and I don't care.
As far as that goes, the main problem with the various sex scandals (Hart, Clinton, Edwards, even Spritzer and Craig) has been the way the media has handled them. The media brought down Gary Hart who most likely would have garnered the Democratic nomination in 1988. Instead we were left with Fritz Mondale, thus opening the door for G.H.W. Bush, which opened the door for Bush the Younger and the debacle in which we are currently entrenched.
The media's handling of these situations also goes a long way toward making the U.S. a laughing stock in the eyes of much of the rest of the world, where people just don't care about what goes on the bedrooms of their leaders.
OK, it's time for me to step back and watch the fireworks.
BTW, about a month ago, I told my wife that if McCain has any brains at all, he will pick a female veep to cash in on the disgruntled Hillary supporters.

Hey Folks, One thing I don't like is "Gotya Politics". There has been some of it in the primarys. It is so childish.
The one thing I don't like about Obama is that he will let the Bush Tax cuts expire, of which ends in 2010 if I'm not mistaken. This is a pocket book issue. I don't know if it will happen but it may cause a lot of business to have to let some employees go.
We have heard that Obama will stop employers that have moved off shore from receving tax breaks. Well, most likely if a business didn't move off shore they would have failed because of having to pay too much taxes in the U.S. It is a real issue in this election. And business has to find a way to survive or the working man will be at the brunt of higher taxes if they are re-instated. Yes we would all like to get rich. Most likely most of us will have to work all our lives to be sucessful. Is it better to have a job or live off of government handouts?

Correctamundo, Ben:
It did strike a nerve. Ya' know, no matter which one of these two get elected... and one of 'em will... hanging chads and all... nothing is going to change in Washington. The empowered few will continue to serve as robber barons over the rest of us poor serfs. Run, run... run! That's all they do... and I don't mean the healthy kind of running.
Two weeks in office and the newbie politicians will start planning their next campaign... while the good ol' U.S. of A. continues to ooze down the drain... a la Rome several decades after the reign of Julius Caesar.
I'm fighting a serious urge to consider voting for Congressman Ron Paul. No, I did not buy into everything he said... but he had the cahones to tell the truth... and he did not spend his time on the podium bashing the other pack of liars up there. I'd be interested to know just who he may be considering as his "running compadre?" Anybody know yet? Hey, we may have just created another "media frenzy." Wouldn't that be something?
Change? Yeah, right!
Dave

Is Ron Paul still in the running? I thought he dropped out a while back. Or is he running as an independent now. Even though I normally (but not always) vote on the other side, I would seriously consider Mr. Paul over the others.

Yes, absolutely.
I almost had tears in my eyes. Many of the people in the audience had tears in their eyes. The audience at conventions always cheers, claps, etc. but tears are unusual.
At one point in Hilary’s speech, Bill Clinton looked on the verge of tears. But that might have been because the woman in the row behind him turned him down for a date ;-)
But then again, maybe my expectations have been lowered. After 8 years of Bush, even a whoopee cushion would seem eloquent.

My question is this... Isn't there enough mud slinging going on with the powers that be? Do we really have to do it to one another? Truth be told neither candidate brings to bare any signs of that they will leave a lasting impression (good or bad) on the face of this country.. Remember that the office of the presidency is only one office... we still have congress and the senate... and they must all work together.. So in the end whomever becomes president.. I'll support them as the leader of our free nation.. I may not agree with all their choices decisions and positions, but really... what candidate would I feel that way about anyways? In closing.. Choose who you want to choose, but don't drag others down for their choices.. We are all in this together... Liberals, Republicans, Centrist's, Conservatives, Green party, Democrats and Independents... oh also Libertarians . We don't need to drag each other through the mud... why use the example of the media and various political entities as our example of how to treat one another? Don't forget the words of a passionate political musician of the 60s and 70s, "All you need is love" Derek

I've been watching these conventions since I was a little kid. Obamas' speech was one of the most inspiring I've ever heard. Many people were clearly, visibly moved. I, and many others find him a brilliant orator. Not only that, he writes his own speeches. I never thought I'd live long enough to see this happen. I bet millions of others never thought so either.
I'm not gonna get into any politics here. It's clear we all have our opinions on the different parties and what they've brought to the table, but to me, it's like the rebirth of Camelot. It's a rebirth for the nation that has seen the likes of John, Bobby, Martin, Malcolm and Medgar and their dreams slaughtered.
This country has a chance to go in a new direction.
I pray we're successful.

I didn't hear the speeches last night, but I know what great orator Bill Clinton is (and I'm not a fan). Obama is also very slick; I haven't been as impressed with the few McCain speeches I've heard. Certainly not his Britany/Paris, "rock-star" speech. That's where he ended any hope of support from me.
Maybe I'm just jaded, but these elections always seem to be a choice between the "lesser of two evils" rather than voting for a true leader you can believe in.
McCain (regardless of his rhetoric to the contrary) is still travelling in the same general direction as Bush, and Obama talks a good story, but doesn't have the history to prove he can actually get anything done. I don't think even die-hard republicans want 4 more years of a Bush-like administration; and I haven't seen any evidence that Obama can get any of his ideas passed through a legislature.
Ron Paul was (is?) one of the very few candidates that I could actually believe in - and had the integrity to say what he felt, and the track record of success to back up his positions.

All I know is that anyone near the pot of gold is tempted to want to get their piece of it. It's human nature...BIG government CAN'T be the answer...the bigger it is, the more bogged down it gets by people trying to corral their own interests. I agree with Brian that the unknown Sarah Palin is the one of the four that has struck the right tone with me...that elected officials should serve the PEOPLE, not their own interests...whatever side of the aisle you sit on you KNOW that in our lifetime, GREED is the underlying characteristic in BOTH parties...CONTROL CONTROL CONTROL...so I can give my friends power and money, then get it back in return later. My choice for prez would've been NY Mayor Bloomberg...He is a billionaire, so he wouldn't need any corporate money for his campaign, so he wouldn't owe anyone after the election. He is a businessman who first built an amazing empire in media...then went on the by an excellent mayor of NYC. This is what we need. Someone who DOESN'T NEED THE MONEY...this takes so much temptation off the table...He is financially conservative and socially liberal, as I am (and I believe Brian is too)...Why would anyone that doesn't NEED the money put themselves through the microscope and dirt of running for president, though? Would any of YOU like to have your life examined like that? I wouldn't! ! You know, Chicago aldermen spend millions of dollars running for positions that pay $120,000 a year ! ! Does that make sense to anyone? Barack Obama bought a house next to his now convicted buddy Tony Rezko...then Tony GAVE him a sizable chunk of land for his own house next door...(just gave him, yes)...then Tony sold his own house for a loss later...anyone's neighbor done that for you? LOL..I didn't think so. YOU HAVE TO JUDGE POLITICIANS BY WHAT THEY DO ! ! Not what they say ! ! Therefore, to finish on topic...my answer is that the speech doesn't matter a hoot...for now it's just empty rhetoric...If Obama gets elected we will see what he actually DOES...and I truly hope those of you that like him are RIGHT in your hope and dreams that he will rise to the occasion and fix our problems...I'm serious...I don't care about political parties..You all need to put your list of who did what away. I long for LEADERSHIP that puts the COUNTRY first...if we don't find it soon, we may not have a GREAT country to leave to our children.

I agree with a few others here...
I wish Ron paul was still on the main ticket... anyone know if he's running as an independent?
I'd say don't count out a strong independent Ross Perot got quite a little bit of the voting populace when he ran.. Derek

Sadly, I don't believe there is enough time left for an independent candidate to get on all of the state ballots if he or she has not already begun the process.
