Hi Wayne!
I gotta tell ya, "Penz2nz" is something I really had to think about for a whole minute or two until it made sense, "PENS TUNES."
Maybe I'm just slow, but... grin

Welcome aboard! Glad to have you here.

Hi Brian, I'm new to this board but would like to say that I agree with you wholeheartedly. When I signed up I actually did try to think of a nickname, however, after giving it a bit of thought, decided to use my real name. After all, this is definitely not one of the millions of IM boards where the members are most likely to get spammed by every other member. I'm planning to stick around awhile and want my name out there, who knows, maybe Randy Justason will be a NAME in to music industry some day!!

I just now read this after posting a bit here. I changed my name to my pen-name. (My "real" name doesn't have a 'showbiz' feel to it.)

I will post my real first name as a sigline.

When I joined, I registered myself under a different name, and then noticed the more I read here that most people use their real names...so I changed it after one post! Good call Brian.

Dear Brian,
This is frightening for me; What you just said is so real. I'm glad you brought it up. I will be interested to know what the posters think. It's like you said I believe in what I say and I'm not ashamed of what I say. I have health problems that have reeked havic on my memory. Some of my songs are very controversial; so, for all intense purposes, I should probably remove my name after the fire goes out. I am pleased to be a part of Plain folks.
Sincerely,
Joyce Roberie

Hi Brian For me the important thing is to sign your post or comment with your real name. Sometimes they get long. You read a comment and have to search to find who wrote it because they sign its with a link to someplace. Which is ok. But it would better with the persons first and last name then the links.

"a rose is a rose is a rose."

here's my take. this forum is an outlet for people who tend to be creatively inclined right? i mean singer/songwriter types are exactly the kind of people who express themselves with original thought and creativity. for many of these people, the persona they create on stage is itself a creation designed to illicit a response from their audience. the internet is simply a different stage. the names created here are no different than names created for musical performances. Sting, Bono, Adam Ant, Vanilla Ice...much more interesting than Gordon Sumner, Paul Hewson, Stuart Goddard, Robert Van Winkle.

The idea that just because you use a false name means you're going to lie and attack people is ludicrous. I don't need to hide behind a fake name to lie on the internet. wink And the reality is that on any internet forum, your credibility isn't based on who you are. It's earned based on what you say. And the more consistent you are, the more credibility you earn. Let the idiots speak - it makes the legitimate contributors that much more...legit.

I vote for freedom of self-expression.

But when you lie in your real name, then at least people will know not to do business with you as yourself. As for freedom, we don't force anyone to use their real name. But we keep those not using real names on a shorter leash if problems arise. There's plenty of long time users with pen names here.

Many here are interested in furthering their career on a professional level. Real people do business with real names, not made up message board names. If your goals don't go beyond anyonymity, then it doesn't matter.

Welcome to the site.... whoever you are.

Brian

I agree with Brian, and here's another thing...
This JPF online forum isn't [so much] for promoting yourself to fans and the general public audience, but for networking with other (real) people who may be able to further and/or enhance your music interests and related career potential in some meaningful way.

Regardless, nothing wrong with stage names, pen names or ficticious business names for doing business a certain way; even then it's nice to know the real person/name behind the public image.

Welcome to JPF!
Michael

Hi Brian,
I'm a newbie but after reading all the responses I have to agree with you! I know I dont mind chatting with someone using a moniker but when I am thinking about finding someone for colaboration, someone I plan on sharing my ideas and my lyrics with, I would be far more comfortable knowing the persons actual name. Just my 2cents on the topic. Thanks!

If I write from my heart, the song will have life. If heart felt music is added, it allows my words to touch hearts, then it has hope. And if it sung by a voice that the music and words truely touch, it will have a soul, and if it has a soul it will touch thousands!

Hi, this is to "Lily of the Valley" or Joyce - if you're still around this thread? - I'm curious how you chose Lily of the Valley - whether it's from the flower itself, or maybe-just-maybe the Queen song by that title. smile

I'm an awful Queen junkie, sorry - had to ask!! It'd be nice not to be (ahem, ahem) the only one around here... LOL.

what are you doing up so late for 34 hours straight.. Brian? just rhyming... i haven't put my whole name in as of yet i tried but it kept telling me there were other laura's. but i think it is important as a songwriter you want people to know your name exspecially if you make it big! I use ridenrose because of my small band. but i always try to put laura at the end. I guess if i change I'll have to put my full name since there are other laura's hope fully not the same last names. Then i would have to change my name for sure lol .. but all in all it's a great idea. To be a songwriter you got to have your name or what you go by so people will know who the famous songwriter is.

Okay, I'm in with the full name. Openness is a good thing.

But just remember, when I start posting mp3's here for critique... with my name and location given, I don't want anyone looking me up to come take my guitar away from me! wink

Well iffin it's okay, I'll keep CincyPolly just because peeps might recognize me from a local music forum and say "hey" (like Bob Cushing *big wave*), and it indicates to others where I'm from so if they're close by and want to network (find out about local venues, for instance) they can. But I'll add my real name, Polly Hager, to my signature line. I'm pretty chatty, so you'll all probably learn more about me than you'd ever care to! LOL Anonymity really isn't an option for someone like me! :-D

Hey Brian it's great to see you again. That's surprising you don't remember me. Oh well, I guess I didn't leave a lasting enough impression last time.

Congrats on the Wiki page, Brian! I've been doing my thing for years and only have ONE mention of a website on it.

I'm looking around your forum and I see it's more diversified and resourceful than I thought. I get the impression you and I can make some beautiful music together!

I have a strange take on this subject in that I was at my old day job (selling electronic components mostly to defense contractors) and one of the Buyers that I sold to, contacted me through the personal email address that is associated with the site. it DID get a little weird (stalkerish) I HAD to be polite, she was a CUSTOMER, but it was awkward. (I am married and the PERSONAL advance where unwelcomed) and alot of the content that I write about is VERY different then my professional persona. Either way I DO use my real name, and am prepared for whatever results may follow. BUT, MORE IMPORTANTLY, I am confused as to HOW you would even verify IF someone is using their REAL name.. the logistics seem TOO combersome for any added utility.

We don't verify. We ask people to use their real name. They can lie. But if they do and they're trying to promote themselves musically, they'll need to also use the lie there. In that case, it becomes their stage name. That's okay. Or if they want to just pretend to be Rob Lowenstein.. so be it. But we really don't want more Bearlover312K's. Or XML200Machine or Ooggin2008.

I think your point is well stated and would probably lead to more serious musical networking and possibly eliminate household pests.

Hi y'all. Just joined ten minutes ago. I DID consider using my real name, but for now, I decided that I want to find out what's going before I committ to doing that. My primary reason for NOT using my real name was and is that I didn't want to seem like I'm HYPING myself or my website or my music. I was on one other music board, and I got into a debate with someone about something or other, and the next thing I knew, the group ganged up on me and someone posted my website address, and the next thing I knew, they were taking apart my music, calling it "irrelevant" and "retro", and "Wannabe". It all started as a discussion about who was "lipsyncing" on the old TV shows. Someone insisted that the MAMAs and PAPAs had done their stuff live on the old Ed Sullivan show. Well, of course, they hadn't, and I pointed out to them. That led to FLAMING and cursing, and finally, the attacks on my music personally. I couldn't believe it. It was a total gangbang. SO, I think that there might be legit reasons for NOT posting one's real name. Does that make sense to anyone here? But, we'll see. I may change my mind once I find out what this group is really about. Apologies for my shyness at this point.

Hello all,

I am a newbie here and just came across this. My impression as someone who teaches the Nashville songwriting and music industry for a living, is that the more your real name is used, the more your reputation is furthered. And in this day of overwhelming communcation choices, reputation is every thing.
In Nashville it is not who YOU know, but WHO knows YOU, and HOW they know you. I can't imagine why anyone would want to use a pen name or alias when it is so hard to get attention in any way at all. You are only making it hard on yourself. I always prefer to know who I am dealing with and at my age you have to be told a million times before it sinks in.
So put me down for real names always. I am happy to be here to provide somewhat of a Nashville "insider" perspective. Been here 20 years, might as well help other people avoid mistakes I have made or see other people make.

Thanks for being here.

Jack,

We have a lot of Canadian members and we always loved visited the Quebec City/Montreal areas. QC is one of our favorite cities in the entire world and we've visited a lot of them in the US, Canada and across Europe.

So welcome.. and consider switching to your real name. It will have a positive impact.

Brian

PS: Welcome to the rest of you. It's great to see folks like Marc and Rand here. You guys have a lot of real world experience that everyone can benefit from.

I think either a real name or stage name should be fine, and if people want to incorporate part of a nickname they can, just as long as we have an idea who we're talking to...but for those with common names the ability to personalize it a bit is important. I agree with Brian that not knowing somebody's real first name at the least, after a long time of "knowing them", is disheartening. But I think it should be a voluntary policy as well because we all have different comfort levels, and not everyone's situation is the same.

However, I also agree that it will help people connect the dots if your display name is close to what you might market or otherwise cite your music under - so that fans can find you OR people on here can spread the positive word about each other more effectively.

So think about what you would like the world to know you as, and go by that. I have toyed with what it means to have even a stage name and know that there are pros and cons that go with that. It's not always a light decision. The same can be said to some extent with a wacky display name but in our case, ultimately, each person here, or the vast majority, would like to be more open about sharing his or her own music and hearing the music and contributions of others...at least that seems to be the point of an online community.

So I think the most important thing is being able to relate a person's display name to the artist. It helps if either of those has a relation to an actual name but that's not really necessary, as long as the artist name is established. Does that make sense? Because for anyone with safety/security concerns, thought would have already gone into all that in regard to selecting a stage name, at least it did for me. But if ever an artist wanted to divulge a real first and/or last name, that's a decision that could always be made on either a public or need to know basis.

Thoughts? For the record I changed mine, so whenever it takes effect, Tania Hayward should be my display name...

Hey, Brian... I fully agree with your reasoning. My stage name is what I registered under, but its also how I enrolled in the AFM and ASCAP as well as the name I used on the radio for years... I guess I'll keep it. Besides my real name is slaughtered by those who try to pronounce it.

I also agree. I have never had a problem with using my real name. I think it just makes what I am presenting more personal and that, to me, is very important.

So if the overall concensus is yes then go for it.

I definitely thought using real names was a good idea.

Now, since you extended names to 20 characters I can change mine to "Mr John Lawrence Schick". Sounds more respectful doesn't it?

Only kidding Brian, though it would be gender revealing in names like Sandy, Kelly, Jody, etc...

I agree with Brian. I hesitated using my real name, King Jeremiah Marnie but here goes. :)Only kidding! (was my grandfather's name). So, I'll use my name, Heeber. No, no, that was his brother's name.

My name stays the same. This group is a lot of fun and very informative even for a drummer. Using real names would legitimize this site even more. I understand being "famous" could be a problem. Let's switch and I can worry about it somewhere in the Carribean, while you can be free to be me. No disrespect intended. Just having fun. Ah! Ah! Ah!
