Well, it's Demo Derby time again. We're offering demos with live drums, bass, guitar, keyboard, and your choice of: pedal steel, dobro, baritone sax, tenor sax, alto sax, soprano sax, flute, clarinet, oboe, or harmonica. All are played by excellent musicians. You can go to my website or www.myspace.com/dunbardemos to hear some examples. You provide the vocal, either sing it yourself or arrange for a demo singer. You will get a mix on cd both with and without the scratch vocal (more on vocals later in this post). The derby will be held again at Rick Otts' studio, The Stringhouse, now with a new air conditioning system. The first official Demo Derby day will be Thursday, August 7, 2008. We will add other days as the numbers of demos increase. Make sure you arrange for your vocals. You need to either sing them yourself or have someone sing for you. At the Demo Derby, we will be recording "scratch vocals." If the vocalist makes a mistake, we won't be stopping the recording. We may do a few punches, but basically can't take time to produce a vocal track. We got quite a few finished vocal tracks at last year's derby (listen to Joanne Lurgio's Demo Derby songs). If you get a good vocal, you're finished and just saved a bunch of money. If you hire a professional vocalist such as Heather Cowles, you must pay them separately. Heather charges $50 a song. If you want me to record you or your vocalist at another time, there will be an extra fee. We will not be accepting mail orders for these demos, you must be present at the Demo Derby UNLESS you use a demo singer approved by me. So far, JPF's Heather Cowles is approved to be a songwriter proxy at Demo Derby. The reason for this is, of the few problems we had at last year's Demo Derby, all but one were because the songwriter was not present to make decisions. So, your proxy has to have the authority to make decisions. If you want to use a proxy other than Heather, make sure they contact me personally. The price this year will be $110.00 per demo. We're adding ten dollars to the price from last year so we can give $5 from each demo to JPF and $5 from each demo to Bobbie Gallup to help with next year's Pineyfest. We'll need a $65.00 per song deposit with the remainder payable in cash the day of the session. The deposit will be non-refundable as of July 24, 2008. I'll post information how to send the deposit in a few weeks. These are demos, meaning they are not to be sold. The musicians will be playing under a union contract, so we would need to upgrade to master if you want to sell the recordings. Last year we had a few upgrades. I will need MP3 links to your songs by July 1, 2008. If you need to send cd's let me know. I need the keys before we begin recording. We can discuss different ideas for the songs over the email or PM's as time permits, but please, when we reach final instructions for the song, send me an email with all the instructions and FINAL INSTRUCTIONS in the subject heading. Last year I had close to a hundred emails for forty songs, it helps if I can look at one message that has everything I need. Last year, Demo Derby songs got a major label hold; songs that got radio play; songs that did well on the internet charts; one song, Vanessa Bailey Bridges' "Froggy Bottom," became a theme song for the Cahaba River Society. Who knows what this year's songs might do. All the Best, Mike

Hi Mike,
Thanks for the information. I'll be having Heather do one or two for me this year. I'm not sure yet, but Jim Heffernan may be coming down with me for a little while in the beginning of August. I need someone to drive one of my vehicles , and he's thinking about it. I'll let you know.

Hi Mike
If I can't make it to Nashville, is it possible to send you a protools file of just me and my guitar, and then have the guys fill it out?

Herbie, if it's set to a metronome with a count, yes. You could send me a wav file, or wav files, or even an mp3. For the guide track you send me, have the metronome click all the way through. Don't forget to leave some at the beginning for a count it. We can "sync" it to your master tracks easily enough after the backtracks are finished. If you have any more questions, just PM me.
We'll miss you! But at least we'll have your voice to warm our hearts.
Mike

Well, it's getting closer. As of now, I'll be accepting deposits to hold a spot. Anyone interested, just PM me and I'll let you know the mailing address. We've got several folks ready already.
Anyone interested in doing this "mail order" or "email order" \:\) let me know, we've been working out more ways to make that work.
Big thanks to Bill Robinson for hosting the party, and big thanks, of course, to Bobbie for Pineyfest. Pineyfest is scheduled to return next year, better than ever!
All the Best, Mike

Thanks, Joanne, we're getting close to filling up August 7th. After a few more songs, I might have to add the 6th.

Thats great news Mike - This is such a wonderful opportunity. Hope anyone who CAN does take advantage! You do wonderful work. Will you be working with the same musicians this year? They were all so incredible. I talk about them all the time. I was in awe watching them work, moving with ease from one genre to the next! Can't wait to hear what happens with my songs this year. I want to submit a tune for recording, please. I am not sure this is the correct method, but the song is called Full Attention and is in the key of D (the other people's key).
very straight forward like old Hank Williams--pedal steel and keyboards with the standard complement of rhythm you references.
I saw that the deadline is past, so if not possible, that's cool.
Let me know if I need to do anything else--I did not see a method to send tune electronically and need to send CD, anyhow.
I will look for address, but send address by e-mail if possible, just in case.
Larry

Hi Larry,
I'll PM you with my address. We can do it still. Old Hank Williams is a treat, the band will do a fine job.

you and me both Herbie! I'm sitting here in Texas sweltering in the heat.... Nashville looks to be 10 degrees cooler (looks inviting....<sigh> although the drive this month would have been draining... I am counting the days until next year.... (and banking on the idea that I will definitely be coming back I miss everyone already!

Hey Joanne,
Are you slated for the Derby on Thursday? I am helping Mike with the scheduling like I did last year...so if you are going to be there then...I will see you. Had an incredible time at the Bluebird with Heidi and Gene and their friend Jonathon from CMT Monday night. Gene even got up and did a song...thanks to the generosity of the incredible blues band that was performing!! Man, that guy has PIPES!!! I think the band was duly impressed!!
Golly I feel so bad that we are gonna miss so many of our Festerbuds this summer!! Harriet and Herbie and all the rest!! You WILL be missed!!
Hugs, Bobbie
