I am curious to know the makeup of the Songwriter Message Forum here at JPF.

Are you one (or more) of the following:

1. Lyricist only
2. Composer only (no lyrics... just melody)
3. Songwriter (lyrics plus melody)
4. Songwriter/singer but non-performer
5. Singer/Songwriter/Performer
6. Singer/Vocalist
7. Other: (Please describe) Include things like: Published Songwriter; Songwriter with songs on the "Charts" (please explain the charts); Singer/Songwriter with published songs on the charts (please explain)

Before anyone responds, I'll estimate that more than 50% are Lyricists only. I'm just curious. Once I see how this poll works out... I'll post a follow up poll. I have no "axe to grind" or agenda... I'm just curious.

If anyone has a different but relevant category (in case I've missed one or two... please let me know. I didn't mean to leave anybody who writes or sings or performs out of the poll. I'm not looking for publishers or recording studios or engineers. The main focus here is people who actually write the songs... or make them popular by performing them.

Thanks,

Dave Rice

I have appeared in all these disguises:

1. Lyricist only
2. Composer only (no lyrics... just melody)
3. Songwriter (lyrics plus melody)
5. Singer/Songwriter/Performer
6. Singer/Vocalist

plus

7. Composer/Producer or Songwriter/Producer (meaning I write/compose & record/produce my stuff too)

Thanks guys and gals:

It appears that many of us wear several hats. Interesting! If I were allowed to pick only one "category"... I suppose it would be 4. Vikki, I understand the 7 thing and I suspect that all of us wear that hat from time to time... in order to parade our work in front of our "adoring" public. LOL!

I'll start a spreadsheet soon (when the "sample" is large enough to sort) and share it with you.

Where are the 1's? (Maybe my theory is all wet?) I wonder if there are any 10's lurking out there... just laughing at us?

Thanks again. Keep 'em coming.

Songwriter/singer but non-performer sounds like a contradiction in terms. Oddly enough though, that's what I am - well, if you put "singer" in quotes grin

Dave,

Lyricist, melodies, singer, keyboard & guitar (for writing), drums on stage, producer/engineer, soon to be publisher, a few indy cuts, radio DJ, two top 100 songs on Soundclick last time I checked, and huge fan of JPF.

Too bad you didn't set up an actual poll...this forum is able to automatically do that, at the start of a new post...and save you all the math.

Anyway, count me in as a #5...Singer/Songwriter/Performer. However, I don't have aspirations to be my own brand...unless I were to luck out and pull a Steely Dan (at their height they managed to be recording artists that were virtually faceless...they just recorded and blew off touring or marketing their image). No, at this age I'm just interested in being the songwriter.

Dave,

I'm either a 3 or 7, depending on the song. I have written about 600 songs and have done lyrics and music to all but 2 of them.

But, where the #7 comes in, I guess, is that I do all the orchestral composing and arrangements...not just the melody line per se. i then record everything here at home.

I used to be a performer, but now I just write, compose, arrange and record. I perform at Pineyfest each year.

Hi Dave....

I'm a 3 ..a tiny bit of 4...and 7 (printed music published in songbooks)...and sometimes...I'm a 2.

VERY LATE P.S.
also add a 1 (too)....I brought some poetry to the board on
November 4,2000...and several of y'all...started me down the path of songwriting. The lyrics started coming with melodies in 2001..so I've had nice collaborations where others wrote the music.

very best to you......

Mostly I am a lyricist but can write music on occasions. I am not a great player. I sing for a living and am in a band so it is easy to get others to help convert my tunes into proper music.
Problem is I can write lyrics in just a few minutes it takes weeks to get the music together as I have to rely on others and studio time. I have a huge backlog of lyrics awaiting music.

#4. No ability to actually do the whole performing thing and would rather just do the songwriting. Do a couple of single-song publishing contracts count?

Mostly a 5, but occasionally a 2. I'm also a 7 of sorts as I've had cuts on tv and AM/FM airplay. Only chart activity was on SoundClick with a couple in top 40 of their respective genres.

Hi Ricki: Welcome to JPF. Single Song Contracts Count!

Kristi: At last... a lyricist turns up... who can also be a complete songwriter.

Jack: You can call me Ray... or you can call me Jay... and you can be an Eight... if you wanna be! It's not up to me. (Lol!)

I hope everyone else is having as much fun with this thread as me. Great responses... even from that big ol' Neanderthal from Scotland.

Keep em coming... I'll keep tabulating. Remember, everything counts... a-a-and... there are no prizes. (Sorry!)

Tristan,

Welcome to JPF. Tell us a little about yourself. You might want to start a separate thread for that so we do not get too far off-subject on this one.

I am a 3, mostly, but love some of my songs so dearly that I turn them into 4's...and I would love to be a 5 but I don't think I have the right image.

I am trying to work on the self-esteem so I can "get out there", but I am a fat chick...and I am pregnant right now and just feel so very unappealing...

not to mention that I am "old" for this biz.

In other words, there are a million reasons why I should NEVER make it as a 5, and yet, that is my goal...

I've done just about it all from writing lyrics and melody, even performed and sang on record, published, produced, etc. Never wrote an instrumental only, not great with the playing stuff. I had radio airplay and TV coverage, no movies yet.

Ahhh... More grist for the mill! Thanks, guys and gals.

Some of you sound a little sad... and that is common with songwriters... but never give up hope, Jamie. This too shall pass.

Tristan: Welcome to JPF. So honored that you chose my thread for your first post with us. Like Al, we are curious to know more about you. If you don't put it on this thread, I'm sure we will all look for it wherever it lands on the JPF boards.

Everett: You are an inspiration to all of us. 2000+ songs and continuing to write... and write... and write!

Terrill: I am a "Shower Singer/Performer" too. Unfortunately, my wife disagrees. LOL!

Some serious counting goin' on here. Somebody lend me a pencil!

Thanks again,

Dave

I am a lyricist only.
Occasionally I have a tune arrive with a lyric, but not often enough.

Back when I wrote just a couple of songs a year they almost always came with tunes.
I find that annoying.

I would say I'm the following:

1 supplied lyrics for others
3 written complete songs
4 do my own demos
5 do the band thing sometimes
6 do acoustic work

Joann, I agree. Like they said in Galaxy Quest (I think), "Never grow up! Never surrender!"

I'll say I'm a #1 but I can't prove it.
