This is the song I wrote for my wife to mark our 31st Wedding anniversary. The lyrics and tune were composed all by myself. I was locked in the studio by my "PALS" till I could come up with an appropriate original tune. They secretly recorded me playing piano I thought I was just messing around to come up with a melody and chord structure. Some of these add libs etc were added to this mix. Anyways hope you enjoy. It is something a bit different from me. http://soundclick.com/share?songid=6465816A Waltz Made for two. Words and Music by Big Jim Merrilees (April 08) I held her close as we danced round the room The very last dance had come far too soon We’d danced two steps and polkas to tunes old and new But our favourite dance is a waltz made for two. (Chorus) One two three one two three Floating on air Squeezing her tightly and smelling her hair One two three one two three To tunes old and new Dancing together to a waltz made for two. Her head on my shoulder and lips close to my ear She whispered sweet nothings only I could hear Although they were nothings they meant the world to me They came from the lady who I married you see Well we’ve been together for thirty one years And to be perfectly honest there has been some tears But we kiss and make up and we cuddle real tight We waltz with each other for most of the night (Chorus) One two three one two three Floating on air Squeezing her tightly and smelling her hair One two three one two three To tunes old and new Dancing together to a waltz made for two. We put on a record and both hum along But music don’t matter cause we make our own song We’ll dance two steps or polkas to tunes old and new But our favourite dance is a waltz made for two. (Chorus) One two three one two three Floating on air Squeezing her tightly and smelling her hair One two three one two three To tunes old and new Dancing together to a waltz made for two Dancing together to a waltz made for two

Just can't get the link posted to work. It looks OK, but it is going some place weird. I just went to home page and found it there. Try this link instead: http://soundclick.com/share?songid=6465816 . Wow! You definitely have that Rod Stewart vibe going (except he never could stayed married for 31 years!). I don't know if you care for Rod, but I love his early albums and faces stuff. Cool tune. Way to go. Piano playing sounds pretty good to me. Kevin

magic stuff Big Jim, sometimes the simple stuff is way better than the stuff ya gotta think about. Let's see, how many married couples are there?...I think there just might be a potential fan base for this sort of tune...ha...good luck with it...MJ

Thanks Kevin have adjusted link. It seems to work now.
Thanks Moker. I wrote this for my wife but if folk like it in a commercial way then that is a bonus. I will probably put it on my solo album due out this summer....or when I get it finished whichever is sooner. LOL

Good song Big Jim, I liked the piano. I was expecting to hear an instrumental break somewhere with the piano and orchestra sound playing the waltz tempo for a few bars but the vocal throughout worked out just fine. Send it to Ourstage. Ben

Thanks Ben for the visit and kind words. I was thinking of posting it on Ourstage but under what category? I cannot place this in a genre. I have never done anything like this song before.

Hi Jim Great Job! I really liked the song, words were right on point and the melody was simple and very catchy. I like "Floating on air" Good arrangement. Your voice sounded good, great pitch and timing, and the piano fills were just enough perfect... Kevins' right you have a Rod Stewart vibe on this one, your a little deeper but I can hear his voice singing this easy as one -two - three! The recording sounded good as well, good blend on everything, the low end was powerful, I like thatGreat too see you being so productive and doing what you love to do.. Look foward to the rest of the CD.

Thanks Mike your words mean a lot. I have never done a song like this before and the tune was made up on the spot under pressure. My "friends" locked me in a room with a piano and would not let me out until I had come up with "My wife's tune" which they cunningly were recording. I believe David used some of my piano in the mix Somehow I get the feeling they knew something I did not. Now they will expect me to write all my own tunes and play them as well. LOL

Jim, you gotta enter this on Ourstage! Hah! You have got my vote. Wow, I can't stop listening to it, the chorus, the verses have stuck in my head. Also Terrill's song Tug O'War is another song that has stuck in my head. You both have hit songs here, this Aussie girl is hooked.

Scott Thanks Scott very kind. It sort of grows on you. This is a departure from my usual. In fact I have never written anything like it before. Probably never would if not for JPF. I have been asked to enter it on Ourstage by a couple of folk. But under which category do you suggest? It beats the hell out of me just what genre you would call this.

Michele Hi Michele and thanks for the praise. I think I might enter it on Ourstage. What category is the problem. It is not rock and hardly country. Puzzled! What category do you think it is.

I'm off now, cause my nearly nine year old son is driving me demented, as he wants to get on the computer before he goes to school, so I don't know what category you can put it under, maybe some of the others might know, but what I can say is, it's the best waltz song I have ever heard in my life. Well done, and let me know when you enter it on "Ourstage" cause I am gonna give you my vote.
I absolutely love it, it's a hit, can't get it out of my head song.
Walk proud! Catch you later, bye! Logging off!

Jim,
I'm guessing the two of you had a beautiful anniversary and SHE LOVED IT!
Nice Teddy Bear touch from an old rocker.
Tell your wife Joyce and I send our best wishes for many more years to come.

Believe it or not it took about ten minutes to write the lyrics and about 20 for the tune. Something just came over me as this is a complete depart from my normal style.

Hey Big Jim,
That's really impressive mate, a rocker singing a country waltz. The contrast works well. I can see a mandolin in there also.
What's important here is not to smultz the song, which you haven't done. Nice change at 1.25 and 2.47. Certainly would work well live at the local club.
I'd like to hear Mike Dunbars' impression on this. You out there Mike ?
cheers, niteshift

Big Jim, you blew me away, I knew you didn't hate country as much as you pretended. This song has great potential, even with your gravely voice. The only thing that would surprise me more is to hear you compose and sing a gospel song. LOL You have to be locked in by your friends more, so you can write some more great songs, you have to record this song. I bet some crooner would love to do this song as well. Best wishes to you and the missus.

Thanks Everett. Now gospel there is a genre I like. Do not go much for the message but the tunes are great. Thanks for listening I am honoured by your comments. I entered it on Ourstage as singer/songwriter. Do you think this could pass as country? Interesting to hear your valuable opinion on this.

Hi Jim,
This is definitely Rod Stewart meets George Jones. I'd like to hear a version with a country bass singing lead. I bet if you got in touch with Mike Dunbar, he could do it up for you. Or another option, if you can put the tracks on WAV files, is a guy I have doing some of my vocals, and my local demo guy. If you're interested, PM me and I'll send you where you can hear him and about what it would cost. I think this one is worth pitching to country publishers. I do like it as is now, but I'm country at heart.

I will try singing it more country.

I meant to tell you that I listened to this song and thoroughly enjoyed it. I coulda sworn I'd left you a comment, but nevertheless, just wanted to let you know that I'm new to discovering the amazing talent lingering around here, and I'm totally drawn to your work. Good stuff indeed.
Here's to doing it Monkey style!

Jim, I'm not kidding, I've listened several times(something I don't often do here) and enjoyed it immensely, even brought a tear to my eye as I could imagine you dancing and singing to your wife of 31 years, man that's romantic, people would eat this up. I'm not saying I'm a great fan of your voice but in the type of music you sing, it works, just as Rod's voice works for him. A high percentage of the world can't sing well in any genre, they would love to be able to do what you did with this song, you'd be their proxy singing, saying what they feel but can't sing or say. The feeling and sentiment come across sincerely.
Now I would love to hear it sung by a good country voice too, but there is certainly room for both versions, it's a song that could cross into several genres, could become a classic, it a topic that is not over exposed too. I wrote a song on this topic too, in some ways I like yours better than mine, that's something I don't often say, LOL. I may post it here later.
Go for it Jim, it's a great song, at least in my ears.

the "one two three one two three" line totally hooked me.

Thanks ant. When you say fadeout do you mean the slowing down at the end? I think the term is a ritendo (I could be wrong) I too think this could be better and will fix it.

It's a beauty, Jim. The lyrics are simple and that works well. Funny, you DO have a Rod Stewart thing going on here...makes me want to hear a heavy dose of mandolin. I think you're no longer being thought of as that guy from Scotland who does a great job singing covers---this is the work of a Singer Songwriter! So, let me guess...you were having a row with the wife and thought this might get you out of the dog house? It probably worked. Great song, Jim. -Mark

"If one man can do it, any man can do it. It is true. But the real question is, if one man did it, are you willing to do what it takes to do it as well?" –Brian Austin Whitney
