LOL - Millie is my cat Will be ironic if this melody isn't original. Been stuck in my head so long I can't tell anymore - probably best if you tell me though. Best I can do without real horns - it's an approximation to what I hear in my head. Here's the song (Millicent): http://soundclick.com/share?songid=6466727Lyric is below. Any comments appreciated.... Thanks, Scott Millicent (c) 2008 by S.W. Campbell What if I found a melody That fit you oh so perfectly In calm or stormy weather In boredom or in pleasure? You would believe that melody Would surely be God's gift to me In that I'd not dissuade you I'd only serenade you Millicent If I could find a melody One that fit you to a "T" In ecstasy or sadness In sanity or madness I might agree that melody Could maybe be God's gift to me To treasure and to savor For one fine day to play for Millicent To play the same thing twice is not a crime, far as I know So if you want to hear it one more time, well here we go

I ask myself that every day, Louis Yes, it's my cat. According to Wikipedia, Millicent is a female given name meaning "she with the gentle gait". I think it means "she who thinks the world revolves around her" Yeah, write a song called Maximillian Thanks, Scott

Well Scott a Millicent is a coin once used in prehistoric times but due to inflation it somehow lost it's value and was withdrawn from circulation. But a great name for a cat. And a great name for a great song. Loved the change in tempo. Very catchy.

I don't recognize the melody...but I like it! This is a cool song. Great rhymes throughout, and I really liked the way the production kept developing, adding new instruments, etc. Great ending, too. The only thing that struck me as I was listening was that you could have milked the "Millicent" line by repeating it..."Millicent, Millicent, Millicent."
Catchy and interesting.

This is so Beatle-ish and retro sounding. Very cool. Like Mark's suggestion.
"Grits is one of those country-boy words that is both singular and plural-like deer, elk and sheep. I think the singular is appropriate when there's a modifier that makes it clear one is talking about something specific. Like, 'Grits are good for you, but these here grits is tasty.'"~~Joe Wrabek

Guess that's why inflation did it in Scott

Thanks, Terry. My keyboard with all its sounds lets me play around with different instrumental arrangements - which is a lot of fun. It'll never match the sound of live instruments but it gives me an approximation... Once I recorded this, I found myself wishing the tempo on the first part was faster Scott

This is so Beatle-ish and retro sounding. Very cool. Like Mark's suggestion. Thanks, Tricia. Two things I always liked about the Beatles were their harmonies and the way they would use electrified and classical instruments in the same song. Yeah, I like Mark's suggestion too.... Appreciate the listen... Scott

I get paid in millicents. The reason why you think it might be an existing melody is because it's so strong. Has that timeless feel...an old French song, or was it a 60's crossover pop hit...no, it's just Scott Campbell channeling his angel. Of course, Millicent doesn't even care. Continue to feed and pet her, thank you very much, and don't bother her when she's sleeping. One indication of the strength of the theme is how good it sounds in all those different voices from piano to fuzz guitar...I really like it. Needs to be the theme song of a good European film, heavy on the accordion, always playing in the background...a film about an exceptionally hot woman experiencing life with wine, coffee, cigarettes and lovers.

Hi Scott,
Love it! Great tune really memorable. I guess the song it reminds me most of is "Happy Together" by the Turtles. Great job with the production and singing etc. Nice change up for you.

Hey Scott, Talk about a "mood" song. You did a great job here. For some reason puts me in a 70's-ish mood. Very good friend. Builds well.
I don't know what to say here.

At first I was scratching my head during verse 1, but it is a great setup to the "sped up/fuller sound" for the rest of the song. I guess I am getting to used the "commercial" sound which says you better catch your audience in the first 15-30 seconds! Loved the fuzz guitar and the production/instrumentation.
Creative stuff, as usual.

I had a song for my guinea pig "Daisy" borrowed the melody from the song "Babyface" and I now have a puppy who I am beginning to write a song for as well. Goes something like this. Isabella is my little Cinderella girl, She's the cutest puppy in the whole big wide wide world, Etc etc. This song is a real mix of feelings/flavors. Kind of playful, spooky and then fun, I can't decide which it is....I kind of like how it builds into a spunkier second verse. How about: What if I found a melody, That made you purr so "purrfectly" Best, Lynn

Scott,
It's hard to believe this was inspired by your cat! Millicent is a cool, kind of retro sounding name. I liked the keys and thought "Beatles" right out of the pocket..but then when the music changed, it reminded me of my brother's records from the 60's and 70's..something like Blood Sweat and Tears maybe? Anyway, it's a very cool piece. I liked the harmonies too.

Yes, I knew you knew cats, Lyle Thanks! Glad you thought the melody was strong. Pleased also that you think it works under different instruments - I felt so too, though one always wonders if he's kidding himself. Yeah, if Millie was a woman, that's what she'd be like Scott

It went like this: I love my Nehru Jacket I wear it and it takes me back To when I knew the dances Back when I took the chances But it just bummed me out - so I figured I'd go with the song for Millie - and it made me happier Thanks Bob Scott

Kevin Thanks, Kevin. Every time I start to think in terms of trying to do something commercial, I sabotage myself and go somewhere else I DO think the tempo could be picked up some in the first verse though..... Appreciate the listen.... Scott

Scott P.S. You should finish the song about your dog!

Well, I don't know any people like that, Wendy, so I had to get the inspiration somewhere else Hey, I'll mention this just because I saw your post on the keyboard forum. With the exception of the distorted electric guitar and the acoustic guitar, all sounds here were created on my $380 Casio keyboard. As you can tell, you can't (or I can't) get a live band sound - but it can get you something that can get the point across anyway. So I use it and when I get a song that seems like it has some legs, I get Sub to produce it for real Thanks, Scott

Scott,
If you had not said this was about your cat, I would have thought you just saw the name somewhere and were inspired to write the song. Today I was listening to NPR and they did a preview of tomorrow's All Things Considered. They said tomorrow they are doing a piece on the father of the chaos theory. It came into my head that would be a great song title, The Father of Chaos. I guess I meant that Millicent could have happened that way too...
Thanks for mentioning the keyboard. I bid on one on E-bay, a Yahmaha, based on the recommendations over there. I saw some nice Casio boards too.

Scott, wow, even your discards blow away my lyric writing skills. good song, too slow for me at the start but once it kicked in it was great. also the tempo change seemed abrupt, not saying you need to discard the tempo change but maybe make the tempos a bit closer to each other. but i got nothing to say on the song itself except i want to hear it again when you find some cat-loving horn players ..ant

Hey Scott...
this was about a cat? Argh! I'm throwing my notebooks away. I struggle, fuss, fume, and hit delete all night trying to write something cool about the workings and trappings of love, and you can draw inspiration from a cat? Geesh...some people!
Nice work!

scott I love how the tempo increased on this song. catchy melody and the name draws the listener in. Your lyrics are perfect. Had you not explained it I would have been thinking ok cool tune. With the explanation just makes it better and a bit humerous hehe.
Oh and since we are on cats....I thought this little poem might inspire some lol. Any old Star Trek fans out there?
Ode to Spot by Lt. Cmdr Data
Felis Cattus, is your taxonomic nomenclature, an endothermic quadruped carnivorous by nature? Your visual, olfactory and auditory senses contribute to your hunting skills, and natural defenses.
I find myself intrigued by your subvocal oscillations, a singular development of cat communications that obviates your basic hedonistic predilection for a rhythmic stroking of your fur, to demonstrate affection.
A tail is quite essential for your acrobatic talents; you would not be so agile if you lacked its counterbalance. And when not being utilized to aide in locomotion, it often serves to illustrate the state of your emotion.
O Spot, the complex levels of behaviour you display connote a fairly well-developed cognitive array. And though you are not sentient, Spot, and do not comprehend, I nonetheless consider you a true and valued friend.
Data

Hey Ant: Thanks! I think I will re-record the first part at a faster tempo - will still have a change but not so drastic. Thanks for your comment about my lyric. Here is the entire first verse I had - which is as far as I got: I love my Nehru Jacket I wear it and it takes me back To when I knew the dances Back when I took the chances I wear my rosy glasses And my mind slowly passes back To when I had my game on Back when nobody rained on My Parade I gave up on it not because I thought it was bad but because it was bumming me out. I have always had the feeling that my best days are yet to come so this was out of character. Not that I mind crawling into the mind of a different character - just wasn't in the mood for this particular one at this particular time See ya, Scott

Dang, you're good! And yeah, has a John Lennon feel all over it. I enjoyed the variation in speed and instrumentation. This is a very cool song! Loved it!

Scott: First I thought I would comment on the lyrics before listening to the melody, having read some of the comments. The Lyrics: so compact and complete at the same time. I have this predisposition to see all that you do lyrically in each song as being all that is needed not a word lacking and not a word that needs to be trimmed and at the same time seamless rhymes. How can you do this on a consistent basis? You can't be human.
Anyway I am a fan will always be I reckon - the pleasure of appreciating something that's simple and elegantly done.
Now to the music!
Paul

Hi Scott,
I think you oughta redo this one country, just kiddin' but I got your attention... Definitely Beatles inspired. It's very well done, and I really like the tempo change. It would make it murder to dance to but... Are you really old enough to remember Nehru collars? I used to wear them things in the 60's. Crushed velvet Nehru long sleeve shirts, tiny pinstripe mohair bells, paisley silk scarves, and now and then a crushed velvet cape with a standing collar for spice. Heck, I almost forgot the platform shoes that made me 6'7" tall. I'm kinda glad no pictures remain to haunt me.

Scott, You always come through with delightfully amusing, whimsical tunes that make me want to sing along. I could see this song behind an animation. It's so wonderful. I hope you find a great home for it like in an animated film. I think you are truly a fantastic writer and I always know where to get a smile if I need one! I have a feeling that this one could get you into an interesting door if the right person hears it. Best of luck.

Hi Scott I'm smiling and imagining a cat commercial where all the other cats are dancing to the tune around her... could be animated. What wonderful inspirations from a feline pet...love the tempo and musical changes. The only thing I'd do different is repeat her name 'cause it's so musical Thanks for sharing this ! jm also thanks for your thoughts on my last post that I let slip off the board !..... I appreciate it, I'll work on it some more.

Hey Scott,
Dang, you're good! And yeah, has a John Lennon feel all over it. I enjoyed the variation in speed and instrumentation. This is a very cool song! Loved it!
Alan Thanks, Alan. Just had some fun with this one. When my wife said, "How about if no one dies in this one" I knew it was time for something lighter Appreciate the listen! Scott

Hi Scott It reminds me of somewhere between Syd Barrett and Scott Walker! Good song - you are quite the all-rounder - most impressed! Dan Thanks Dan. This kind of song isn't too typical for me but every once in awhile I get a weird signal from somewhere and go with it Appreciate the nice comments! Scott

I think it's just laziness on my part, Paul. Seriously, thanks for the kind words. I have had my share of songs that have needed the words trimmed - just been luckly on the last couple to have been pretty tightly constrained by the music. Thanks! Scott
