I'm going to some songwriting events in the next couple of months and I'm looking at different internet options I can use to communicate with potential co-writers , outside straight email / written messages.
Has anyone used any VOIPs or video conferencing ( prefer video ) . How easy / stable are they to set up and use ? Which are the ones that people are most likely to be able to access

You are now the third or fourth writer I have heard talking about this, the other three I could be writing with, actually one of them I do have 2 or 3 songs going with, but I am going to have to get up to speed on this cos I write with people from all over the world it seems, but don't know what half of them look or talk like...ha...Moker

Hi Clff,
I regularly co-write long distance using Skype and Google Docs. It works really well for my collaborators and I. We can talk and play music to each other in real time with the Skype, and by using Google Docs to write the lyrics, we can all write and update it as we talk. Its fantastic! Almost like being in the same room.

I use Skype for co-writing - either just to chat, or to toss ideas around. Mostly though we use email & send each other samples.
I have video capacity but I have found that having both camera's on at the same time seems to slow the transmission of data... which is okay for a casual conversation but can be annoying if someone is singing or playing. There can also be a time lag, so if I'm playing the piano and the other person is singing... they don't hear what I am playing in real time. It depends how far away they are and how many bounces the signal has to make, I guess.

Cliff,
I have done this type of thing on several occasions. However, I've not done it specifically with skype. I use iChat/AIM with the built in video cameras / iSights from Apple. It works very well. I've done things as far away as Australia with it (I'm in Los Angeles).
It depends on the people involved. Some people aren't as technically savvy as others. I don't know if I'd ever do it on a permanent basis as I like being the room with the person I'm co-creating with but it's a way to get some sort of connection as we're working when needed.
I've also done co-writes for lyrics via e-mail.
Right now I'm in the process of finishing three songs with an artist out of Canada and we do a combo of chats with file transfers.

Hi Cliff,
my co-writers and I use the Skype chat facility only. There is a real lag in the video that becomes very annoying to me.
Google Docs is great! It allows you to 'share' the document with anyone you like (ie co-writers) so you can write in real time together. I have your email address, so i'm going to set up a document in Google and 'invite' you to share it. You can the hae a poke around it. Its a lot like using MS Word.
