Bill, thanks for sharing that information. That DOES make me feel some better.

Hi, Tricia,

Prayers rising for your hubby and for you. I've been away from reading the boards for a while, so am just seeing this....but prayer is always timely. We'll all be watching for news.

May the peace and joy of Easter be with you both!

Today,(Easter), marks the day when Jesus rose again from the dead. To me, this also symbolizes a new hope for the rise of good things to come.

May you receive the news which unburdens the spirit and lifts you up!

Blessings,
Heidi

I do not want to start a new thread for this.
Tricia...those are the best words we can hear...NEGATIVE..
I am soooooo happy for you and your husband.

I had my consult with the Cardiovascular surgeon last week. I do have an Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm. But it is minor and it will just be watched via an Ultrasound once a year.

But the biggy is
I have been diagnosed with a thickening of my esophagus wall and went in for an EDG. that is where they put a tube down your throat and take a look around with a camera. If they find anything suspicious they do a Biopsy.

I had that done at 7.00AM this morning.
When the doc came into the recovery room after I woke up he was all smiles. Everything looked good. NO TUMORS.. I do have a bit of esophagitis that can be handled with Prilosec. But no visible evidence of CANCER.
He did do a biopsy. Might as well, he was there. There is a condition called Barrett's disease he will check for.

I am not completely out of the woods until the Biopsy report comes back but the doc said it looked fine.

The other good news.
As most of you know I have Prostate cancer. I got my PSA blood test results today as well.
0.72....WOOOOOHOOOOO my cancer is definitely in remission and probably gone.

First of all, Bill, that is WONDERFUL news. I know you must be relieved!!!

Brian, I'm sure there will be follow ups, since this is considered a baseline CT.

Heidi, I can't tell you how relieved I am.

Amen to that, Alan.

Unfortunately, between the lump under my arm, our son getting bit by a brown recluse and Don thinking he might have lung cancer, I've developed alopecia. They are testing me for an antibody that attacks the thyroid gland. This could also have CAUSED the lump under my arm. At least I'll know that this is all related and is treatable with steroids &/or low dose thyroid medication. Lord, stress will kill you. I've had a skin condition every winter for the past 4 years-come to find out it's probably caused from that, too, if that's what it is. It's called Hashimoto's Disease and it can really kick up during stressful situations. In layman's terms it's when your thryoid gland becomes inflammed, basically.

Tricia,
Great, what a relief!
But life always bring new things for us to keep praying about, and thankfully "God works all things together for the good of those who love Him and are called according to His purpose". (Romans 8:28)

The only "missing link" is our faith in God's plans, so we can always keep that in our prayers! smile

Best to you & yours!
Michael

Tricia, so glad to hear your great news about your husband. That is terrific! The stress of wondering is just torture. I think that is half that battle. I just love it (not!) when you are waiting for test results and they take forever or you have to wait over the weekend. ha! Stress can definately bring on many health problems. Believe me, I have mine too. My theory is after 40 things start breaking down. lol I became hypothyroid a couple of years ago. Thats been a pain to deal with. Now the doc says I have low calcium and low Vitamin D (Go figure, I am allergic to milk and icecream so I guess I haven't been getting my dairy) and I have to go in for a bone density scan. I also have to see a neurologist because I have had strange muscle twitches since last august. I lay awake at night and can't sleep and go visit the health boards and then start diagnosing myself with every disease out there. MS, ALS and all of them... and of course I haven't even been seen yet. LOL Man I hate it! All this to say...we are in God's hands and there is not one thing worry will do to make any of it better. It only makes it worse. So I have been practicing deep relaxing breathing and trying to remember to pray more.
Ok...so you are not alone...and I am thrilled that God has kept your hubby safe from cancer! What wonderful news! I love getting good news!!

Me, too, Tammy! Keep me posted. Hypothyroidism or a high anti-thyroid antibody antigen causes many, many vague symptoms. It's hard to diagnose unless you have a full blown episodes. Most of the time, it can be diagnosed with the Thyroid Profile. The anti-thyroid antibody is a separate test and can be high when the other tests are normal. It's considered an auto-immune dysfunction the same as Lupus, Rheumatoid Arthritis, MS and many others. It's kind of scary is why I want to get it under control quickly. The very idea that my own body is attacking itself isn't settling to me at all.

I should find out for sure about mine Friday or Monday at the latest. I'm jubilant to know that so many little inconveniences could be tied together with one diagnosis besides menopause or just stress. I feel like I can deal with whatever I know about.

I can see why you'd have muscle twitches if your calcium level was low. If your thyroid gland is not working properly then so many other things can be affected because it's one of the main endocrine regulators.

Thanks for understanding Tricia! LOL I can not identify my auto immuine disorders from perimenopause because there are about 40 of those symptoms ha! And I swear I have ALL of those! From anxiety, to throwing my clothes off in the night! to feeling like I am going crazy, to having my hair thin out, to muscle twitches, body aches, okay... I will shut up. I tell my family members...I have a simple solution! Please take me out back and just shoot me!! No wonder people feel depressed. My gosh! I thought I could stay about 19 forever. It aint happening.:) I just try to laugh about it... its just comforting knowing everyone is aging right along with me. A glass of wine every now and then sure helps all these freaky moments for me and jabbering on the net. Yep, we are all in this together!!
Keep me posted Tricia, I am sure they will figure things out. For me it was many trips to the doc and process of elimination. It takes months. Like it took months to even have low thyroid issues to show up on a test for me, meanwhile the symptoms went on for a year until we had a diagnoses. Autoimmune things are tricky and they can intertwine with each other. That is why I am praying I don't get another one. The menopause thing is ENOUGH to add into the mix. I am here for ya!!

Hey all,

First off, Tricia, that's wonderful news!!! What happened to the good old days when all stress would cause was an ulcer? As another autoimmune disease sufferer, I know how surreal it is to have your body attacking itself, but once you actually have a diagnosis (or more than one), it's amazing what you can adjust to. I think Al and Helen are marvelous examples of how to rise above the adversity.

Nevertheless, I'm so thrilled with your husband's news. Now it's time to take care of yourself!

Bill, great news for you too! Those tests are awful, but so worth it when the results are "so far so good". Hope the rest of the report is just as positive.

Tammy...sorry to hear about the problems you've been having. As you say, the Auto Immune diseases can be very complicated from both a diagnosis and treatment standpoint-- especially when they overlap, which as you know is common. My only caveat (which I think I mentioned to someone earlier) is be careful about your internet research. While it is a wonderful resource, until you HAVE the diagnosis or diagnoses, it can be very inflammatory and since the information is out of context, it's very easy to gravitate towards the worst case scenarios. Certainly, I agree information is power, and forewarned is forearmed, etc., but you don't want to make your worry list longer than it need be. In the meantime, good luck!

Finally, Miss Kaley...regarding your "leg twitch"...have you been evaluated for Restless Leg Syndrome? A simple sleep study can help get a gauge on it...and meds can help control it. Before I was put on meds for it, I was getting about 3 hours sleep tops during a given night. This was also due to sleep apnea...which I can't treat, because the equipment needed involves wearing a mask for exygen, but I have really bad psoriasis on my scalp and my nose, broken courtesy of rascal Charlie with a head-butt at age 2, never healed properly, so no can do. Oh well. Like I said, it's amazing what you get used to.

As for me, I've been MIA since I spent the last three days in the hospital too. Nothing serious, just a very nasty strain of a stomach virus that's working it's way around town. Because of my immunosuppressed state, it hit me hard, and I was rushed by ambulance to the hospital, blah blah blah. Very exciting for the neighborhood kids. Terrible time in the hospital....missed Nonni's big appearance on the Today Show (though it was taped), Charlie was in the throes of it while I was being taken away, and JJ got it while I was in the hospital. Anyway, I'm home now, SO GLAD.... nursing a cup of tea....and trying to play catch-up.

Take care everybody.
Beth

Dear Beth! Good Grief, nothing minor about a trip by ambulance?! Gee! I would be thinking I was dying. So glad you are alright! You must have felt terrible! The flu, to me is the worst thing to get, ha! It's nothing but agony and not stop pain in the stomach! You poor girl! Get better!!

Kaley...ya you are right..all these things could be the perimenopause and I am about ready to write a song about it. I call this phase morphing into a different body! ha! One that I don't like, like invasion of the body snatchers. Man, if only they handed out instuction manuals on this so we could study up! lol! It's like there's no warning... kind of like a sneak attack, kind of like boiling a lobster slowly and he doesn't know he's dying..lol thats sick huh? Maybe not that bad, but still. What the heck? I can't let this ruin my life. haha! I am laughing right now because it's the only thing to do. You know everybody just has to deal with it, deal with life and ailments and I look at it like a rollercoaster ride. Just hang on and try to survive. If anyone has any great suggestions for dealing with this please enlighten us. Thanks! Have a super day!

Well, my test for the anti-thyroid antibody was negative, so I guess the hair loss is "just" stress related so I'm going to have to deal with it with the help of Buspar. Now, that things have settled down maybe I can get it to grow back. The dermatologist swears it will. I'm doubtful at this point but I'm trying NOT to obsess about it or to focus on that aspect of it. I don't have cancer and Don doesn't have cancer is the bottom line.

Beth, sorry to hear you were in the hospital. Hope you're feeling better.

Tamera, I really think you and I need to stop drinking anything containing aspertame. Diet drinks are notorious for containing them. For awhile Coke was making 2 Liter bottles of Splenda and so was Pepsi. Now, you can only find them like that in canned drinks. Diet Rite still has 2 Liters and canned drinks and they have no caffeine. That's what I need to switch to, I guess. I had for awhile and I felt better.

Aspartame accumulates in joints and in the brain. It accentuates anything auto-immune related. Truly, it is poison.

I have another appointment with the dermatologist Tuesday and they will do punch biopsies on my scalp. Not looking forward to THAT at all. I was trying to avoid it but now there's no other way around it since obviously it is not thyroid related. I am planning to go the internist just to pick his brain about the possibility of it being either metabolic or endocrine related. If he says it's nerves then I'm really going to knuckle down and start eliminating things from my diet which is something I've needed to do for a long time. Things like refined sugar and fat, for example.

Lynn, come over and lay hands on my head!!! Kaley, I'm ok. It's just going to take time to get this hair to grow back. I'm still doing some shedding. Don't know if it will continue to fall out if it was damaged or if I need to take a round of steroids to make it stop ASAP, then let it grow back. It's not responding well to traditional treatment is all I know. I'm really getting frustrated. Pray I can stay calm about it because I don't want to get into this vicious cycle that I can't break because if I can't calm down about it, my hair will never grow back. frown Losing your hair can make you stressed out, especially when you can no longer hide it.

Thanks Tricia and Tammy,

Started feeling a little yukky again yesterday afternoon, got all panicky thinking it was Round Two, but everything seemed to simmer down. Now I'm just taking it very easy....

As for your own medical concerns, I wish you both success on your quest to find some answers and/or some relief.

BTW, Tricia, my mom just started losing her hair for "no good reason"...so she's going thru a similar process. As she says, it just adds insult to injury (of aging). I believe in her case she has just used too many harsh hair treatments on a scalp already compromised from medically-induced lupus years ago.

My hair has thinned out dramatically as well, but that's due to all my meds and my condition....we're falling apart, aren't we?

It reminds me of the song I wrote about my son's first haircut, called "Hair Today, Gone Tomorrow"....

Ciao for now,
Beth

I hear you, Beth. If my internist seems to feel like this is all stress related, I'm going to have to rethink a few things. I'll do whatever it takes. My husband has been so supportive.

Funny, you should mention the hair products. My dermatologist said that since it's gotten so bad not to use any chemicals in my head for awhile. Hairspray has alcohol in it and so does spritz and mousse. Next time I go, I'll have to ask him about that stuff, too. I've been using some mousse and a little hairspray to hold my hair in place so the spots aren't so noticeable.

You are right about Helen and Alan. You hang in there, too. It's got to get better. We can't fall apart, now. We've got too many songs to write. smile

RITT!!!!!!!! Hey, you!! Hope you're feeling a little bit better. You take it easy.

Thanks, Mrs. Jean. I'm very happy about that. I've got him broken in now. Don't want to lose him. That's for sure.

Tricia, I have been AWOL for so long and had no idea what you've been going through. I'm so sorry you've gone through so much stress and know exactly what it's like. After my son's ordeal, and then my husband's two surgeries and depression, I was put on Buspar about six months ago. I'm so glad that you hubby's tests were clear. That damn cancer is a monster!

Bill, glad you didn't have to battle the monster again.

It does feel like we start falling apart as we get older, but
the alternative isn't very appealing, so
we do the best we can.

Stay smiling and healthy everyone!

Diane

Tricia and Beth:

Still thinking about both of you. I hope the pathway ahead will be lined with flowers and things to make you forget your ordeals. Life is so precious and we are here so briefly. Smile whenever possible and know we remember you often in our prayers.

Kaley, the hot flashes will be more tolerable if you drink at least 2 Liters of water a day. Maybe it's my imagination but it really helped mine. So does excercising regularly. And, so does limiting caffeine, stress and getting in bed at a decent time so you don't feel so sleep deprived. The hot flashes were bothersome but I can deal with that. It's the hairloss that I'm beside myself about. It's getting worse and it's not growing back. That's ok, though. They'll get it figured out because I'm going to keep after them to find out.
