Hayride to Heaven © 2004 dawg, BMI
In the last white, clapboard farmhouse at end of a country road, shaded by the sycamores with the sides all over growed. You'll find me every evenin' on my model H Farmall with my wagon hitched and ready when old timers come to call.
(Chorus) For their hayride to heaven when they feel its time to go. Most have never flown before and they like to take it slow. They can visit with their neighbors and share the ice tea jug on their hayride to heaven and an eternity of love.
Someone always brings a flat top, mouth harp or mandolin. The gospel songs will take wing and the voices all blend in. I never hear no crying; the mood is pure rejoice. They're going to meet their savior making a joyfull noise.
(Chorus) On their hayride to heaven when they feel its time to go. Most have never flown before and they like to take it slow. They can visit with their neighbors and share the ice tea jug on their hayride to heaven and an eternity of love.
Times, they are a changing, and some folks always fail. We've built two new churches, but we filled up three more jails. Some will choose the wrong path and its for their souls I fear, but as for their destination ... well you can't get there from here.
(Chorus) This is the hayride to heaven when they feel its time to go. Most have never flown before and they like to take it slow. They can visit with their neighbors and share the ice tea jug on their hayride to heaven and an eternity of love.

Hi Dawg, Meant to check this out sooner cause the title is unique! But I'm scratchin' my head! You just drive 'em around in the wagon till they pass on? Or do you set it afire and push it off a cliff?

This is really inspired man!
The images portray scenes wonderfully. I can see all the older locals gathering to enjoy fellowship.......Super place to do it too.
I like how this conveys the difference in moral fibre between then and now.
The 'can't get to there from here' line ain't one of my favorites but what the hell do I know anyway.

Nice One, Dawgger!
Last H-H Alliterative Title I remembers was "Highway to Hell"..heh..so this'n's a BIG Improvement!
LOVED the "2 Churches/3 Jails" bit...Brilliant Writing!
I share Birdie's wonderment about HOW they get off to Heaven from that Tractor-Powered Hayride, but the Jugga Iced Tea sounds delectible & I imagine the Ol' Timers manage to figure it out for themselves.

This is sweet and has a 'classic' feel to it, with the right music, it probably could be. Let me stand beside Ann, as a little confused about the exact meaning of this. I don't mind a little flight of fancy, I'd just like to know the basic premise. Nice work, though.

Sorry folks,
but a major telephone cable got cut in our area today, so we had no phone or internet service all day. Didn't mean to ignor all of you.
Every religion has its own version of heaven and some have more than one way of getting there. In old Norse, you had to cross the "Rainbow Bridge" to get to Asgard, in Greek Mythology there was the boatman Charon, who would ferry you across the river Styx.
In Christian song, we have several examples already, "This Train Is Bound For Glory", "Swing Low, Sweet Chariot", "Ezekiel's Wheel", "Michael Row The Boat Ashore", and "Bungee Jumpin' Jesus".
Ok, I made the last one up ... but you get the point. There are several songs of this type, describing the trip to heaven in terms the common people can feel comfortable with.
Hope that helps.

LOL, No Joe ...
It isn't even much of a title. Feel free to have at it.<g>
I tend to put a fair amount of humor in many of my lyrics, but I admit I tend to fence it off from most of the gospel ones... although I seem to recall doing one a few years back about praying for a "faster pastor".<g>

Didn't want to get away from the purpose of being here, which is to tell you this is a really good song, and it probably does have a market in the gospel folks, since they're always looking for innovative ways to describe religious things. (And they don't get much, in my opinion. So much existing gospel music strikes me (anyway) as waydam conventional and accordingly boring. Yours is not. Thank you.
All that said, Whbat "Bungee Jumping Jesus" brings to mind is those little plastic dashboard statues (Magnetic Mary and friends). What do you do when the magnet wears out or falls off (or has nothing to stick to on today's vehicles because there isn't enough metal in them)? I think you affix your statue to the rearview mirror with a rubber band--and you have...?

LOL Joe,
Given Bobbie's propensity to use endangered species as pinball flippers for her automobile on country roads I thought last year to get her a "Bobble Head Jesus" for Christmas, for her back window. Alas, she shot down the idea in no uncertain terms and rather crude language.
As far as the bungee jumpin' Jesus; it would still be awful hard to beat Kristopherson's, "I don't care if it rains or freezes, long as I got my plastic Jesus ... sittin' on the dashboard of my car."
To me, that song helped make "Cool Hand Luke" a classic.

I am just plumb tickled to say that Sweet Ida Marie Naelitz has let me browbeat her into attemptin' the music on this bit of my fractured vocabulary.
Thank you, Ida Marie!

A question and a comment:
QUESTION. So if Idamarie is doing music to your song, and (presumably) records it, where does it go that I can listen to it? Her Website? (Which is?) Or yours? (Which is?) I would really like to hear it.
And the COMMENT. I always liked Kristofferson's "Plastic Jesus" song, but it has occurred to me it might be time for an update; Magnetic Mary and friends don't stick to dashboards any more. So Plastic Jesus needs to become a Man of the Nineties, so to speak. (Or whatever. Ain't the Nineties any more, is it?) The idea will no doubt kick around until it has a full set of words; right now, I just have the makings of a chorus. Starts out with the music from "What a friend we have in..." but then changes to something else:
I've got a Bungee Jumping Jesus, Swingin' from a rubber band, on my rear-view mirror: Bouncin' by my side nearly ev'rywhere we ride, Rappin' on the windshield to remind me that he's here.

Dawg,
Let this one get past me with all my wife's medical situation. Glad I caught up to it.
Whomever it was that invented pen and ink most surely had a premonition that you would validate and justify (I guess I just gave redundancy a great example there!) his efforts.
Although they were both story tellers but in slightly different ways, I hear a meld of Tom T. Hall and Kristopherson in this one.
Damn, this is good!

Hi Everybody and Dawg, The more I play with this lyric, tuning it up, the more I like it. This is really such a creative lyric and a pleasure to write music for. So far, I have taken it on three different paths. Tried it as a ballad. Pretty nice. Tried it as a mid tempo with a def. beat. Fair! Tried it as a rousing gospel with guitar, blues harp, and a mandolin, as suggested by the Dawg in the lyric. It rocks any way you lay it down. Thanks for the great words, Corky. I should have something for you to chew on by Wednsday. If you like it, we will have us a Down Home Country Gospel song for your ALBUM. Idamarie

Hello Joe,
I also always liked Janis' "Oh Lord, Won't You Buy Me A Mercedes Benz". Both tend to bring organized religion from the 16th century latin into the realm and thoughts of the common man.
With Ida and me, it is pretty much like me and you. She'll get it down, send me a tape, I will take it to Jim to get it transferred to a cd and eventually it will get posted somewhere.
I don't have a website. (I have a domaine name, dawgsongs.com that I have paid for, but never got a good website done yet.)

I didn't read any other comments, but I really love this. The last verse is as good as the first, and that's not an easy task. The only thing that left me hankerin is how a hayrack can take ya to Heaven. I feel like it needs a slight innuendo to the fact that maybe you are leading the funeral procession in a small farming community or something. Other than that, this is pure country gold, Dawg!... you know what they say, Dawg is just Gwad backwards...er, well, you know what I mean. Tink

Lawd Mr. Dawg! While I'm readin' this nugget, I have this mental image of the Grim Reaper in overalls flyin' a Farmall. He's towing a hay-trailer full o' happy folks, who are havin' a veritable hootnanny, towards heaven across the face of the full moon... like E.T. I think he's singin' along too! This is what you bring out in me... I hope you can use it in the video. Uncle Chuck ------------------ http://www.soundclick.com/bands/athabaxtra.htm http://www.chuckcrowe.com

Like John, I read but did not comment as all I thought had been said, and there wer zeros to be swatted. Never the less, I liked it, and in fact copied it and took it home and sung it, and it did that lovely. Well for my singing leastways. Anybody does a noise on this and gets it to me before Saturday I will air it in the tribute show no sweat. If not, and I don't make a good recording of it to how it went for me, I will recite it because it does that nicely also. When Dawg gave me this lyric to do I took it about ten different ways before we finally settled in a handclapping, southern gospel kind of a ride. It came out so different and so good in my humble opinion that I did not do the demo myself. I have taken it to The Church Of the North Coast to ne demoed in thier state of the art recording studio with thier band and thier choir. They are in rehersal now and will probably have this on a CD and posted in two weeks from Wednsday, the 28th of June. That is when I proposed the song and gave the arrangement we worked out to the musical director. He is thrilled to be doing this. I was not aware that Dawg was no longer here to answer to me when I E-mailed him several notes on my progress because I did not go into the forum and no one sent me an E-mail with the news. I just learned this evening of the loss of my friend. I have heard the music that John put to this lyric and it is quite different from the treatment I have given to Dawg's wonderful words. I hope you will give this song another listen as I will post it here as soon as I have a CD finished. Thank you, Dawg for the many wonderful lyrics you have allowed me to be a part of. It was a great privelege to know you and to have you as a friend through this life and the next. Hope they have sticky buns and Orange Mimosa's in heaven, Good Buddy. See ya when I get there! Jpfers. This was a post to let Bobbie know I had done a noise of this lyric purely so I could include it in today's show, and as Bobbie has contacrted me and okayed the move, I am now going to delete the song from my site, as it was really only there so Bobbie could get it and approve or otherwise. I have felt his presence through Bobbie. She's certainly a stellar example of a grand soul and when she speaks of Dawg, well...it reminds me of the movie "Ghost" and how I felt when I saw it. Love does transcend time and space. I just wish we could communicate with those who have left this earthly plane a bit better but I'm still working on that....

Howdy Graham,
I don't believe that any of the finished music for this was ever posted. Idamarie did one really fun rowdy version...and Jack Swain did another excellent version. I love them both. This truly was the very last lyric Dawg wrote. If that fact doesn't give you chills...
Hugs, Bobbie

Bobbie, this should have been/ be a hit, there isn't anything that you can go change and make it better, which is the case with most story hits. I never got the chance to know Dawg, but what a talent and I can feel your deep admiration for him when you speak of him. I visited your Gallup-n- Dawg site, nice way to carry on the legacy of one so enthralled by and accomplished in creativity. This is a super lyric...Moker

Hi Moker,
Thank you so much for the sweet thoughts on this. I think anyone who had the opportunity to get to know the man couldn't help but admire him...for several reasons. He really was an incredible talent. He was witty, incredibly creative, generous to a fault, and genuinely cared about other folks. But the man was also an imp and a rascal. Ask anyone who was taken in by all the tales he told. That included me. LOL Wasn't until after he passed away that I learned what was truth and fiction about some of his most treasured "memories". LOL
I'm working with interested composers to see that some of his finest lyrics do get to music. Thanks to Al David for ghosting them off Dawg's fragile old computer for me.
I am delighted you enjoyed this lyric.
Hugs, Bobbie

What A Lovely Man,
And so nice with his natural talent, right from verse one he pulls you in and paints vivid pictures.
Appealing to all the senses. Evoking , what a talent, I wished he had met a musician who could have put some of those lyrics to beautifull music.
Maybe he did, well if he didn't down hear he would have found someone up there
