Howdy all-
I don't usually post listings for open mics, but today I wanted to give a plug for Jake's Java Joint's open mic, happening this evening (and every Friday) beginning at 8:00pm. If you haven't been here before, it is definitely worth a visit (and I'm not just saying that because it's one of the few open mics I can get to easily w/o a car...) - the acoustics are great, the staff and audience are super-friendly, and there are some utterly fantastic performers who stop by fairly regularly.
Jake's Java Joint is located at 3644 W. Kennedy Blvd. in Tampa (as mentioned, the whole shebang starts up at 8pm). Please come on in and kick off your Friday night with some great local music, poetry, and other artistic fixin's!
Thanks -Bill

Bill, it was a fantastic night of music Friday. Every time I go there I feel great when I leave. Jakes has a strong core group that come in regularly and new people consistently showup. It was great to see Jeff Jacobson and Lara Ewen from New York there on Friday. I went to see there performance at Pro Star Studios last night a stellar performance. I want to thank Frank Ryan for closing out the evening with "Goodnight Irene". I have to miss next Friday, I'm going to Ruth Eckerd Hall to see Benise Nights of Fire, a compilation of Flamingo, Salsa, Gypsy, and Spanish Instumental Guitar. Check it out on You Tube. http://youtube.com/watch?v=ZFUjZ9WGokgFor those of you that are not familiar with Jakes Java Joint its at 3644 West Kennedy Blvd. Tampa. Couldn't be easier to find, just east of Dale Mabry with plenty of parking. It is a Friday open mike with great Acoustic Sound in an eclectic setting and a diversified following that includes spoken word, poetry, comedy, drama, opera, and music and whatever but you can never tell what the whatever will be. But always a good night with good people and that is what is important. papos

Great Friday night at Jakes. 35+crowd and some great performers. Jakes has got to be the most attentive audience for an open mike around. Stone one of the hosts and others are increasing the popularity of this open mike and the easy location (near the bridge and on Kennedy Blvd) is a great help.
Bishop and his new guitarist (jazz, r&b) were the surprise of the night. Hope Bishop can keep this guy coming.
Frank Ryan and some friends sang a song they did for Friday Morning Musicale. It was two songs at the same time. I had to screw the top of my head back on afer that.
Brad gave us a full report on the alarming conditions occuring in Wisconsin where herds of llamas are entering the state and are feeding off Canadian Geese. Makes you want to cry!
Thanks to all the performers and the great support this mike is recieving. Hope to see you there next Friday. papos

Yeah, it was nice to see a full house at Jake's. What's nice about Jake's is that it's usually a very diversified Open Mic with various music styles and poets as well. Makes for a nice mix. Amazingly great atmosphere for what's a Print Shop by day!

One of these years I'll make it down. Won't be tonight, though. I'm sick as a freaking dog. Some kinda bug/flu thing. Hoping to be better by Monday for La Casa.

Richard,
Sorry to hear you're sick...been down that road a few too many times this year. Actually had/have a little something this week and lost my voice earlier in the week. Nothing bad like the flu though.
Get better...Jake's would love to have you. Some good music down there tonight. A duo did a Lucinda Williams tune - I love Lucinda Williams tunes.

Maria was interviewed by a reporter and she told the story of the border guards and picking Florida Gold. I,m waiting for her to bring back the Feminazi.
Thanks to all

Bill Et Al, I have been busy all week with Hispanic Art exhibitions. There will be one over your way today, Friday Nov. 16, at 1408 West Shore Blvd. (Towers of West Shore) from 11am-2pm, Teresa from The Key of Life will be performing,(guitar, keyboard, violin, percussion via loop) should be some great music.
I will be going by Tre Amici early tonight to see Steve Vaclavik. I'll see you at Jakes at about 9. Looking forward to welcome some newcomers tonight. papos

Another great crowd at Jakes this Friday. We heard it all, including newcomer from Bradenton Ryan Newcomb with great acoustic and vocals for his originals, it was a pleasure to hear him.
Another new Tranquillo transplant Dennis Tozier with his heartfelt originals and a favorite Eric Clapton.
Ricco, a new poet let us know what it was like to be the bar of soap that your lover lathers in the shower. (but still rated G)
Thanks to Frank Ryan and troupe for a great end of the night show.
Sorry but no open mike next week because of the holiday so I'll see you on Friday the November 30th for the next one.

Another great night at Jakes, a little slow with only 12 performers. Some Highlihghts: Stone reminded us what to be thankful for in life. Barry Moses gave us a great disfunctional family Christmas song. Sarah's daughter Danielle gave us a terrific vocal performance. I gave the papos version of Silent Night and surprisingly no lightning struck me dead.
I wish everyone a Merry Christmas and look forward to the January Showcase at Whistle Stop. papos

Another Friday at Jakes Java Joint
Stone our host explained to us about the Polish Nun.
Stone passed an idea on to some of us that the "Suitcase Man" in the back who was seen wandering the street prior to the open mike, was kicked out of the house by the "Tall Blonde" on the side who did not hurt your eyes at all. They both disappeared into the night at the same time. Now I am not sure myself. We will need to check the newspapers tomorrow.
Barry sang a song about he and Jules getting drunk and realizing they both like showtunes and diminished 7th chords. Why is Billie questioning their orientation? I like diminished 7th chords too, I just can't play them. ( There were 43 different chords in the song, how does he remember them all? I can't remember a 2 chord original and still in the process of learning my third chord E, it's a tough one.)
2 Jeffs played, we decided to name them Jeff Squared.
Jeannine toned down Joes guitar and vocals.
Brenda played percussion with Philip and added some beautiful vocal backup. Go ahead Philip and Brenda.
Happy to see Jim McGonigle with his original acoustics.
All in all a good night. We may never know what was in the "Suitcase".
See you at "La Casa Dolce" Monday night. papos

Let me answer my own question:
- open mike is on - Papos may have forgotten to send the reminder this week (probably too busy being a rock star at Tre Amici) - everyone should come by and play

Great night at Jakes. Great music, poetry, and drama. I had some friends in from Boston, cold up there. Aris is handing the open mike over to Moe and others. Neil, new to Tampa and a new student at Tampa University, came with his keyboard for some great originals. High tech he has it setup to a computer to give it the grand piano sound, He downloaded chords and lyrics to his phone and backed up Aris reading the music from his phone. Hope to see Neil at La Casa Dolce. Brad did some fine words animal life. Barry gave us a Dylan tune that made your head fall off. Highlight of the night was Ace with Neil's keyboard singing "Why don't they kill Barry Manalow". If you have never heard this song it is on a par with anything that has ever made you laugh. Alot more, but stop by and get a feel for the place. Check out the pictures. http://openmikes.org/listings/jakesjavajointpapos
