Hi Folks,

We have some folks who want to help us develop our site a bit more. As we discuss possibilities, I'd like to put together a list of key services for the musician and songwriters needs.

For example:

CD Distribution (aka CD Baby)
Digital Distribution (aka CD Baby)
Independent A&R (aka TAXI)
Site Song Storage, Downloads and Sales (aka Soundclick)
Booking Assistance Tools (aka Sonic Bids)
CD/DVD Manufacturing (aka Disc Makers)
Political Representation (aka Future of Music Coalition)
Internet Radio/Streaming Broadcast (aka Pandora)
Music Licensing Sites (aka Audiosparx)
Education Resources (aka SongU)
Information Resources (aka Muses Muse)
Music Retailer (aka Musicians Friend)
Music Demo Company (aka Session Players)
Musician Website Hosting (aka Hostbaby)
Public Networking Sites (aka MySpace)
Books and misc (aka Amazon)
Music Organizations (aka Just Plain Folks)
Search Engines (Google)
OnLine Copyright Registration (Library of Congress)
Local Chapter Networks (NSAI)
Music News and Press Releases (Mi2N)
Music Promotion Sites (Music Submit)
Music Marketing Info (Bob Baker)

You get the drift. What I want is to find more of these types of services and example companies of the best you know that do that thing.

This project will also involve our volunteers to help discover multiple quality examples of each segment. I need this info pretty quickly.. so now I leave it up to all of you.

Email me at jpfolkspro@aol.com if you want to keep it private, or post your responses on the Mentor Message Board here.

Thanks in Advance!

Brian

Great idea Brian, just hope we show balance and neutrality and do not look as if we are favouring anyone in particular as per other sites.

the new version of this message board allows for a pay pal function (i.e. pay to use certain or all areas of the boards). I am not sure if we'll use it.. but it has possibilities for some things... like special lessons or something where we can charge something to raise some much needed money for our upgrades.

Excellent idea!
JPF needs something besides "hats and T-shirts" to help support such a huge organization. I know you also take donations and on occasion special "donation drives" to help pay for one-time costs such as happened last year for this board upgrade.

If you could offer some badly needed services right from this site for a reasonable "per use" fee, it would fit right in with everything you/we are already doing to help musicians and songwriters with their learning and career goals.

You mentioned "special lessons", so to add to that, here's a few more ideas:
1. Expert consulting - this could include things like technical, marketing or legal advice, etc.
2. Professional advice - can include feedback on lyrics, melody, composition, songwriting, demos and performance, etc.

I'm sure we could think of a few more!

The idea would be to collect a fee for each unique service order which gets paid to the JPF "expert" service provider. Of course JPF would keep a percentage for administering these services. The percentage could range anywhere from 10% to 15% or whatever you can work out with the various consultants and service providers.
In some cases, service providers might offer JPF to keep a larger share (e.g. 50%) or if they wish they can also contribute the full amount of one (or more) of their consulting jobs.

This could give JPF a steady stream of monthly income while giving JPF members (musicians & songwriters) some great resources and personalized service for their various needs. It also gives professional mentors, consultants and specialized service providers an outlet to promote and practice their skills. In essence, it would work like a "curated" marketplace to bring experts together with various JPF members to fullfill their needs.

Just kicking some ideas around!
Michael

Hi Brian,

Here's some key sites I think people would find useful
in no particular order.

Facebook.com - A social networking site growing exponentially daily (250,000 sign ups
per day). Could be used asuseful tool to communicate with fans.

MusicSubmit.com - A place to distribute music that
I've been watching for a couple years. Haven't done
any tests with it yet though. (not sure if this is the
same thing your referring to above "Music Promotion Sites
(Music Submit)")

MusicIndustryHosting.com - A place that offers hosting
geared to musicians and is run by the same person as the link below.

MusicMarketingtips.com - Lots of information on marketing
music.

Musicbizacademy.com - All kinds of great info. Also
sells the book "How to Promote Your Music Successfully on the Internet"

IndieBible.com/intro.shtml - Haven't read it but heard lots of good things about it.

Aweber.com - One of the best hosted mailing list
services. Very useful for building a list of fan emails for
when you want to announce news about upcoming
events/releases etc.

Parabots.com
- A good self-hosted mailing list script as
an alternative to using a mailing list service like the
one above.

P.S. Great forum, looks like lots of interesting people and
information here.

Thanks,

Dino

Thanks for the specific examples guys... please continue to add more.

Our idea is to do 1 of 3 things:

1. Partner with the best of the best in a particular niche

2. If we don't think there is someone we want to partner with, then we may just do it ourselves.

3. If we determine it's just not something we want to get in the middle of, we'll do nothing. = )

I still don't forsee us charging a member fee. Instead, we might offer a slate of services as a separate thing. I want to keep JPF free for all. (Just Plain Free if you will..) But adding a slew of services ala carte all in one place with one single interface for musicians is what I have in mind. We have no interest in competing with our friends who do great work, so we're hoping that they'll want to work out a mutually beneficial partnership where either we endorse and facilitate folks using their service or they share a portion of fees collected from our members or trade other in kind services for the business. We're already partnered with some of the very best in the business in their fields and I don't forsee that changing.. just perhaps becoming more focused than in the past.

So any type of service, big or small, especially those that exist on the web in some way (i.e. web site features, hosting, radio, etc.) please post and let us know. If it makes sense, we may try to incorporate it in what we're working on.

Brian

Brian, why can't you have different membership levels available like they do at songramp. The free version would allow people to do just what they are doing now but the paid membership could perhaps have their own page with song and or lyric samples and a big discount for services from the affiliates.

Michael B,

Can you put all these together by category and then find all the examples you can for each? (This is basically what I needed for that project we discussed).

So we'd have the category and then as many good examples as you can find:

CD Manufacturers

Disc Makers: www.discmakers.com
Oasis CD Duplication: www.oasiscdduplication.com
etc. etc.

I don't think we'd need more than say the top 4-5 of each category (unless there was a specific reason to have more).

If anyone else wants to help Michael out, please let him know. Also, Kaley Willow offered to help with this project as well I think Michael.. send her a note and you can split it up to get it done quicker. I can use this info in a conference call I am having with our tech development friends. We're really looking at a broad based umbrella for all these services and companies.

Brian,
Ok, just got back here today, but makes sense to sort these by category! I'll get it started and then post here (or wherever you want to "pin" it) and then I can edit and tweak as needed, or you can copy and paste to another place so you can give it a final "format".

I'll get on this within the next day or two and post back!

Michael

Please get with Kaley so you guys can get twice as much done... things are heating up on our end and the sooner we have the info the better...

I'd like to end up with at least 20 clear cut services and 5 examples of each (if they exist). (More is even better.. but 20 would be the target minimum).

Brian,
I just finished the first "master" draft. It will be easy to add new categories and additional listings as we continue to get meaningful input from our members. By "meaningful" I mean folks that have actually USED (and are satisfied) with the services they are suggesting and recommending, otherwise we'll end up with a long page of "Googled" listings with little idea about relevance or quality. For example, most of the listings I've suggested (contributed) have been around for quit a while and I've been using them (successfully) or have been watching them and/or hearing good things from other musicians, etc.

Regardless, we can never do enough "research" to properly vet out any of these resource listings.

Attn: JPF members and volunteers (Kaley included!) smile
You are all invited to suggest more listings here on this topic.
Please see Suggestion guidelines below in my next post.

We are going for QUALITY rather than just quanitity. Let's focus 1st on thos categories that don't have at least 5 listings yet, so please take a look and go from there.

As new things get listed, I can add them and let Brian go over the list for final editing.

Michael

Thanks Kaley!
Ok, I'll look for your email, but if possible please post any additional suggestions right here on this topic. If you know of any other volunteers (official or not), please encourage them to drop by here to view our list and then help fill in the "blanks" for any services or categories we may have missed or that need additional listings, etc.

As suggested above, I'm now asking folks to post up to 3 recommendations (per person) according to these...

Resource suggestion guidlines:
1. Check to make sure your suggestions are NOT already on our master list as shown above.

2. Suggest a product, service or organization that you've recently used and/or have had some positive or meaningful experience with; even if just by word-of-mouth or because you'd be very interested in using such service/tool as soon as you might need it.

3. Please be sure to include: suggested CATEGORY, official product or service TITLE and complete URL.

4. If possible, please include a brief discription (one or two sentences) of any positive experience or success with your suggested listing. Note: If you list more than one suggestion for the same category, please list in alphabetical order for easy copy & pasting, thanks! wink

5. Optional: If a listing is already included, please feel free to post a brief description of any positive info or experience you've already had with that resource.

Quality control:
If there are any products, services or tools currently listed which you believe are bad or negative (i.e. evil or scammy), please post your experience and reason for wanting us to consider removing such listing. Keep in mind that not all services/tools are alike and even the BEST services may not meet every artist's needs depending on their level of skills, focus or goals, etc.

Let's continue!
Please invite your fellow members and songwriter friends to drop by and review our list. I'd like to see many more JPF members (10 - 100+) stop by and suggest more services/tools to add to our list. I think we have a great start but this is NOT a "one-man show" or project. We're all in this together and Brian, Kaley and I need everyone's input so we can build the best possible resource list to help our community.

Thanks!
Michael

Michael,

Audiosparx has to come off the list. I find them to be both sleazy and unprofessional to the highest degree. Their idiotic and vicious attacks on me when I was helping Tammy went so far over the top that we could and would never endorse them and we'd always want to warn members to steer way clear of them.

Brian,
Ok, I understand. It's just been removed.
Let's hope that in the future they can fix or improve their public relations and perhaps we can consider giving them a another chance.

Attn: Everyone!
As of today, January 23, here's where we need some help to "populate" categories for which we don't have at least 5 entries yet:

Copyright Registration

Digital Distribution

CD/DVD Manufactures

Independent A&R

Internet Radio/Streaming Broadcast

Music Demo Services

Music Licensing Sites

Music Promotion Sites

Music Storage, Downloads and Sales

Political Representation

Public Networking Sites

Search Engines
Note: I'm not too concerned about search engines since there's only about 3 major ones that all the rest work off of, but if you have any that are geared specifically for helping music artists, bands, songwriters or music publishers, please post them.

Songwriter Association Networks

Glad to help....brainstorming a bit....

Just some thoughts......

Do we want anything like an Insurance Category. I know there's
several Insurance Companies that cater to Musicians?.....

what about the Grammy Organization....I believe that the organization itself is a lot more than the Awards....
(NARAS)

what about tipsheets?.....
and newsletters?....
Music Consultants?

How about...Audio-Visual Media Tip Sheets (hadn't heard of that one before....but they're out there...and they tell you who needs music...what they need and how to get to them.....
i.e.

http://www.mandy.com , then look under post production / composers

http://www.cuesheet.net
looking for composers

This is fun.!!!....Needed a diversion from what I was working on .....

Kaley,
I just added some of your suggestions and here's some input on the rest:

Audio-Visual Media
- I'm not opposed, but let's get Brian's input first. He'll know best how this may (or may not) fit with his overall vision for this resource listing project.

Grammy Organization - Again, let's see what Brian has in mind. Perhaps it might conflict with the JPF song awards, but if not, perhaps Brian would like to list this under our current "Songwriter Association Networks" or other (appropriate) category.

Insurance Category - Sounds Ok to me. This might be useful to full-time or touring musicians. Let's see what Brian says.

Music Consultants - these can be listed under Music Marketing Resources.

Newsletters - these can be listed under the Miscellaneous (books, newsletters, magazines, etc.) category.
Note: I justed added "newsletters" as an item that goes along with the Miscellaneous category.

Tipsheets - these can be listed under the Music Marketing Resources category.

Society of Composers and Lyricist - Thanks! This has just been added to the Songwriter Association Networks category.

Michael

I want to make sure that we give attention to artist/musician stuff as much as songwriter stuff. There's tons of resources for songwriters and for finished recordings.. but what about artists trying to develop their career? I've always felt JPF did more to help artists than anyone else out there. Most orgs. are songwriter focused. Though we obviously do mostly songwriter stuff on the message boards, the rest of the org activities (newsletter, roadtrips, chapters, music awards) have an artist support tilt to them.

Yes, I see what you mean.
In other words we want to offer resources that will help career potential artists get into "1st gear" and beyond, all the way up to cruising speed! wink

Several of our categories already address these needs, such as:

Booking Assistance (Sonic Bids and other agencies)
Digital Distribution (e.g. IODA for indie record labels)
Independent A&R (i.e Taxi, etc.)
Music Demo Services (e.g. Session Players can help bring income opportunities to performers or help artists finish a new recording project, etc.)
Music Licensing Sites (Pump Audio, etc.)
Music Marketing Resources (Bob Baker, Indie Bible)
Music News & Press (can help artists get affordable publicity)
Music Promotion Sites (General artist/band promotion)
Musician Website Hosting (shop around for the best service deals)

I was thinking of suggesting an "indie friendly" Record Labels category. For example, Bad Man Records (label) is very indie friendly and does some networking with CD Baby and was recently featured on one of their podcasts.

A few of our JPF members are also signed with Magnatune which gives them tons of free exposure and licensing income opportunities.

Maybe we can come up with a good list of indie labels that are trustworthy and receptive towards new "career building" acts and talent.

Another good category might be Music Publishers. Again, these would have to be indie friendly or maybe just a list of resources that can help career-minded songwriters learn how to effectively publish their own music. Most start with only a few of their own songs and later grow by adding on new material from co-writers and other project contacts, etc.

So those are my new proposed categories with a "career tilt":
Record Labels and Music Publishers. Any other categories that might help the serious career-minded artists?

Michael

Michael,

I just realized my comment read wrong. I didn't mean to imply that there weren't already musician resources listed, just that I want folks who are adding stuff to think about that stuff as well. For example, are there any sites out there who offer technology to do co-recordings? (i.e. multiple people adding tracks to the same song). I think there are.. but don't know the sites. (Tonos used to do that actually).

Also, Wikipedia is a good resource site. I use it daily to look stuff up. Has anyone used that WikiRyhmer site?

Brian,
I understand Studiotraxx.com offers something like an online co-recording collaboration tool, for web based recording projects.

Wikipedia is a helpful resource for many small or larger projects. In the last year I've used it several times to confirm some important bits of information and include some public domain images for some of my project.

BTW, I don't think I misunderstood what you were saying, but it made me realize that we need a good balance of resources for both the new songwriters as well as the more experienced career-track artists. Ideally we'll have a range of resources that will help everyone from the beginner to the most experienced.

Michael

Here's a few more:

Thanks Niteshift & Mike!
Your suggestions have all been added except for "The Sheet Music Store".

Mike, can you explain how that works? Is it a place for artists to sell their sheet music? Do they work directly with indie artists or do artists need to go through a distributor or publisher to get their music into this store?

Also, which category would it best fit under? Were you thinking "Musical Instruments & Supply Retailers". I guess the keywords would be "supply retailers", but I want to know a bit more about this service. Have you used them to buy sheet music or mainly to sell your sheet music? Any insights or experience (past or present) will help.

Thanks,
Michael

Hey Michael,

The Sheet Music Store is a store that sells sheet music online. You can buy sheet music, books, like the Alfred books or the Hal Leonard books, they have choral music, instruction methods for instruments (like the Mel Bay method or the Suzuki Method), wedding music, band music, that kind of thing.

Kaley,
Ok, looks like some good new suggestions!
No need to send them to me, just them right here on this topic. I'll be adding recommended suggestions to our master list so this will be the most efficient way to post/publish the list were it goes "live" instantly and everyone can review it!

If you don't mind, please repost your suggestions in this format as follows:

Category = Music Storage, Downloads and Sales
Garageband.com: http://www.garageband.com

That way I'll know what your intended/recommended category is and I can simply "copy & paste" into the master list. grin

Thanks!
Michael

Mike,
Ok, I see what you mean... it's a music sheets & supplies retail store. That might fit best in our "Musical Instruments & Supply Retailers" category, though it could also be cross-referenced in our "Publications (books, newsletters, magazines, etc.)" category. I'll have to think about it, but most likely the "... Supply Retailers" category will be the best fit. Only problem is that there must be 1,000's of these kinds of retail stores and of course we can't list them all. crazy

Michael

Kaley,
Ok, that's perfect! smile

Regarding the Legal Resources, maybe we can combine Copyrights with Legal like this: "Copyrights & Legal Assistance"
We can start with that and later tweak as needed.

I've just added them all.
Thanks!

Michael

Ok, good idea Brian!

I just added Entertainment Attorneys as a category but I'll let you suggest the first few listings. I know you have some attorney friends (some active on this Mentor Forum) that will probably be happy to get listed! Please list a few to get us started and we'll go from there.

I also "tidied up" the alphabetical sorting of our category listings. I've been tweaking the headings and in the process some things got out of wack, so I'll fix things as we go.

If I missed anything, please let me know.
Regards,
Michael

Howdi,..... smile

I know this is more a songwriter category suggestion, but should we list those folks who help writers on an individual basis? i.e., Harriet Schock, John Braheny, Barbara Cloyd, Jason Blume?
and their web sites?

and...

Are we interested in listing demo studios at various price ranges?

Kaley,
Some more good ideas, thanks!

"Songwriter Coaches" might work as a category title for individual (personalized) coaching. If Brian approves, I'm sure we could add this resource category.

Currently we have "Demo Services", but we could change it to "Demo Services & Studios" and see how long the list gets. Later we can cross reference details such as price ranges if needed.

What do you think Brian?
Thanks,
Michael

What about.....Musician Grants, Residencies, Retreats as a category?

and here's another for the legal category, if wanted.
Copyrights & Legal Resources: Volunteer Lawyers For The Arts
http://www.vlany.org/resources/index.php

Publications (books, newsletters, magazines, etc.) OR Independent A&R ( If wanted, not sure which category?):
The Bandit A & R Newsletter:

What's been an eye opener for me in reseaching is how quickly
organizations, web sites, etc up and disappear. Truly, Brian
...a tip of the Hat to you...on longevity.

best....

Thanks Kaley!
I couldn't resist "Volunteer Lawyers", so I added it even though I never heard of them before. I'm sure Brian won't mind, but he has the final "say" on all listings, so no worries.

Bandit A&R Newsletter came to my attention about a year ago from a fellow CD Baby artist (Andy Martin) living and touring heavily in Europe. I looked it over and it does sounds like a pretty solid resource. Their based in the UK, Editor - John Waterman, and have been serving the music industry for over 20 years.

Grants, residencies and retreats sound interesting. Here's my thoughts: Grants will be either private or publically funded, so it's up to each artist to check out the "program" and see what fits them best and what kind of "strings" if any are attached. Residencies might fit under the broader "Education" category and Retreats might be included together with Conventions, Seminars and "Road Rallies". I'm sure there's a ton of those around. wink

The best private "grant" (think investment) program I heard of is called Artist Share:
http://www.artistshare.com
Amazingly they developed a program that funds artist's new projects directly from their fans who 'invest' in various opportunities. The service takes only a 15% administration cut and otherwise is free to qaulifying artists. I'm pretty sure Brian has heard of this and I'm sure he'd be supportive of these kinds of private funding plans.

And yes, it's true that there's a very high turn-over rate among internet based businesses. Purely online products & services have to be phenominal to survive for very long against all the global competition on the net. So that's another thing to watch for... How long has a service been around and building a good reputation?

Then there's also some exceptions to the rule, such as when cool new services blossom up overnight like the college kids that started sites like amiestreet.com and PureVolume.com That reminds me, we should probably add Amie Street!
You can check it out here:
http://amiestreet.com/page/about
Here's what they say:
"...we price music right - all songs start free and rise in price the more they are purchased. Our dynamic prices allow fans to buy music without breaking the bank and they serve as a useful tool for finding great music.

We support our artists by giving them 70% of song sales and never taking ownership of their creative work. We want all artists on Amie Street to be successful and we believe that our unique marketplace will accomplish this goal to a degree never achieved before."

I heard last summer that one of the larger indie labels signed a deal with Amie Street to promote their whole catalog! I think this is an indication that they developed a viable marketplace concept.

Michael

Just Plain Quotes
"A lot of people will tell you that preparation is what will make you successful. But I think that people misunderstand exactly what that means sometimes. The type of preparation you need most is the kind that allows you to instantly seize an opportunity, change your course based on a momentary circumstance, and grab hold of the totally unexpected when it happens, and allow it to take you for the ride of your life! That is the kind of preparation that can lead to the most enjoyable type of success." -Brian Austin Whitney
