How many songs do you think were written in 2007? (Every song, from all around the world, in any way, shape, or form. Heard or not. From a two year old to over a 100 year old. Whether needing rewrites or not. Pro and not. EVERY made up song that could simply be called a song! Words or not. Recorded or not. EVERY SONG!!!! Well,,,got a guess for a number? I have no idea! And, how many people from all around the world do you think wrote at least one song during the year? I need to know both! Within ten thousand please, high or low! Happy New Year! May your efforts bring you smiles and even more friends on this wonderful planet we spin on and travel through this universe. John

Are you serious? Does someone actually know? I would think its impossible. LOL Expecially if there isn't a record of them. LOL I just registered mine a couple of days ago with ASCAP and that was about 15 years worth. Ya I am a little burned out on writing too. I wrote so much this fall. No I need a little break. But not for long. Tammy www.tammyewards.comwww.myspace.com/tammyedwards2

If I knew that I'd could get a job on the boardwalk guessing people's weight. (how do they do that anyway?) P.S. I don't know but just the thought of all those songs and all that creativity gives me the warm and fuzzies!!

Boy. They wrote twenty million, and I only wrote a dozen? I better get busy. Not much time left, either...

Wow - 20 million songs. If we assume each is about 3 minutes, it would take, if I've done my math right, 114 years of constant listening to hear them all. Good thing they don't all enter the JPF awards Scott

Hi fellow JPF'rs:
My guess is that the number is closer to 50,000 songs. Every writer is tuned to a different frequency and each is driven (or not) by a different drummer. Some wrote a significant number but I suspect that most wrote maybe only 2 or 3 songs.
Like a commercial for a medical product on TV, here is my caveat: The estimate above is based on songs that were completed and either recorded or put down on paper as a lyric or melody or both.
I'll be interested if anyone actually discovers a reliable source for this statistic.
All my best,
Dave Rice

How many songwriters or would be songwriters are there in the world? Multiply that by an average of 10 and you'll have your answer within 10 to 20 percent.Or not.

Hmmmm...I think Ande's a wee-bit on the "High Side."
Here's an Educated Guess:
Let's say JPF has 40K Members (& an additional 10K who don't join in, but probably Lurk:)...& we'uns average-out at 5 Songs a Year. (As good a Guess as Any...heh...but you can get your calculators out & plug in Higher/Lower Numbers & see where it gets ya.)
50K X 5 Songs = 250K Songs/Year.
Now, I'd also guess that JPF makes up around 30% of The USA's Music Folks..a Conservative Guess. (But again, you can plug in Higher/Lower Numbers & see what ya get.)
250K X 70% Add'l = 1,750,000 Songs from the USA.
Believe I read somewhere that there are 7 Major Markets for Songs in the World..
1.7 Mil X 7 = 12,250,000 Songs/yr, Worldwide.
Now, admittedly, SOME of those Markets are SMALLER than the US..so let's alter the Guestimate a bit further:
IF this is "1/3 Off", Overall: deduct 4,166,666 & ya get 8,333,334.
IF it's Off "By-Half", ya get 6,250,000.
So..If ya want a "Spread", the final Guestimate'd be 6,250,000-to-8,333,334 Songs last year.
Or..ya can add the pair together & get 14,583,334 and divide by 2:
7,291,667...
20 Mil it Ain't..but it's as Educated-a-Guess as I'm able to come up with. (Plug in whatever Variables ya wanna & see what ya come up with!)
I'd be More Interested in seeing How Much Loot the Music Industry generated in revenues in 2007...is The Industry in Ascension...or is it in-Decline? (& I'm NOT talkin' about Just Major Labels.)
Big 2008 Hugs, Stan

(As good a Guess as Any...heh...but you can get your calculators out & plug in Higher/Lower Numbers & see where it gets ya.) Pretty optimistic I think Stan to think that only JPF people write songs. To think that those members all write songs regularly. There is only a handful of actual participating members. except for the awards. I don't know about Florida but I have not had a single Musician come into my Studio in 3 years who has ever even heard of JPF. I have also never met anyone who knows about it around here unless it was at a JPF sponsored event. Last two open Mic's I went to in Nashville no one had heard of it either. But they were not big events. I also always ask if people know of Soundclick. I have only met a couple who have. They all know about myspace tho. I think many songwriters and local musicians don't bother with the internet. If even one out of a 20 knew about JPF I'd be surprised. So I'd venture to say you are off by at least twenty fold. JPF is only a fraction of the actual songwriters out there.

I'd say about 1 in 1000 of the population actively tries in some way to write songs - so if there are about 6 billion people in the world, that's maybe 6 million people who might actually try to compose something. They will each write somewhere between 1 and 50 songs in some form - so an average of 25 and half songs each. That adds up to 153 million songs. Obviously I can't guarantee these figures are accurate. Dan

Dan's the winner! 153 million! How do I know this? 153 is one of my personal numbers, Jan,'53 (1-53) And since I asked the question, I get to pick the winner as I see it. Done,,,thanks! Now I can think about other stuff. Love all the answers! Creative, as I expected. Thanks for playing. Dan wins the opportunity to write one more song than the average per songwriter for this new year. Congrats Dan, and make it a good one! John

Splendid! The last thing I won was 3rd place in a Road Safety competition. I got a small packet of felt tipped pens. As I was only 8 years old, this seemed quite a bounty. The pens have, of course, long since dried up - so the opportunity to write 26.5 songs this year is a long overdue windfall! Dan

I read somewhere that there are two million songwriters in the US alone, about one percent make their living at it and about five percent make some money from it.
