Challenge 14
The goal of our "Song Challenges" is to write songs/lyrics on demand within set parameters. We don't critique each other's songs in this thread (but you can say you like someone's song if you want to.) Please post your original works. If you have already written a song/lyric that fits within the parameters, please feel free to post it.
Well… Thanksgiving is coming up. How about a song involving gratitude? Please include a chorus for this one. Good Luck.

Hi Jean,
Thanks for another challenge. What an appropriate time for this hook. I don't believe there are alot of "Thanksgiving" songs out there so perhaps we'll start something here. Happy Thanksgiving to everybody!!!! I can picture a warm video with this (needs a pretty melody)
“This Thanksgiving” ©2007 Lynn Orloff
Autumn's chill reminds us all Thanksgiving’s coming The leaves are scattered everywhere, their colors bright How we anticipate the day When we will bow our hearts to pray But darling without words there’s something I will say
Chorus This Thanksgiving as we gather round the table All holding hands while giving thanks to God above I hope you know that when I squeeze your hand so tightly That is my way of saying thank you for your love
Friends and relatives have traveled many miles The smell of pumpkin pie and turkey fills the air We come to celebrate the day Our spirits high though skies are gray But darling without words there’s something I must say
This Thanksgiving as we gather round the table All holding hands while giving thanks to God above I hope you know that when I squeeze your hand so tightly That is my way of saying thank you for your love
Bridge: Though my heart is truly thankful for the life I live My greatest blessing is receiving all the love you give...so
Final Chorus This Thanksgiving as we gather round the table I'll hold your hand as we give thanks to God above I hope you know that when I squeeze your hand so tightly That's just my way of saying thank you for your love My special way of saying thank you for your love

Chasin’ Sunsets An open sky, and a full tank of gas the sun is setting on this overpass. It makes me thankfull for all I really have The nights are cold, and the waiting is cruel. The only thing that seems to get me through is that one time zone to the next brings me closer to you. (Chorus) I'm chasin' sunsets (x3) With the thought that you'll be there with me. I've seen the bright lights, of fame and fortune The crowds make me thankful for how blessed that I am like any success its here and then it's gone. From every hotel I sleep in To every lonely morning thinking Just waiting for the dawn I call you on the telephone I hear your voice I'm not alone And I know that it won't be long (Chorus) But you believed when times were tough You're my diamond in the rough The only constant in my life has been your love. I didn't worry too much about strict rhyming. I'll try and do some music soon. I'm sure lines will change as I try to make it fit within a muciscal backdrop.

I Just Want To Thank You (c) Kevin Emmrich 2007
(Verse 1) When I think of you Two words come to mind When I talk to you I find that I'm at peace When I hold you Nothing can compare
(Chorus) I just want to say Thank You For all you have done I just want to Thank You You pulled me up
I just want to say Thank You I know it's not enough I just want to Thank You For all The things you've said, All the things you fixed With no thought for yourself I just want to thank you
(Hot Instrumental Break)
(Verse 2) This is the time of year When we seek what is true The is the time of year when we hold loved ones close This is the time of year When I find myself thanking you
(Chorus) I just want to say Thank You For all you have done I just want to Thank You You make living fun
I just want to say Thank You I know it's not enough I just want to Thank You For all The things you've said, All the things you fixed With no thought for yourself I just want to thank you

Here is a song I wrote through the eyes of a survivor of a disaster, like 911 or flood. Thank you for your love, Your hand upon my shoulder. Though we barely knew each other, Your love made us bolder.
Chorus: Alone, we are a bruised reed, A candle dimly lit. But together, we'll be stronger. We'll get through this bit by bit.
Thank you for your patience, The look that says "I know". Though the time to mend seems long, Your patience helps me grow.
Thanks for sticking with me, For sticking through the thick and thin. Though the struggle seems so long, In the end, the right will win. This is on a cd of mine, and I'll get up on my soundclick soon, I hope. Thanks
Seek to glorify the One that loves you, in all that you write, and study to show yourself that you are approved by God.

Let's all remember to be thankful and appreciate our own gifts-whatever they are-no matter how big or small.
Are You Walking the Path? ©2007 Monica Yasher
A great sorrow rises inside of me, for you do not know I have given great gifts. The gifts I give are regular people, to create a better world for all. Each person is irreplaceable, fulfilling the mission that I call. Are you walking the path I have laid for you? Please know I'm talking to your heart, it is true.
A great sorrow rises inside of me, for you seem to be afraid to do some things. You think I didn't give you anything, anything remarkable to do. As much as the greatest earthly man, rest assured I do truly love you. Are you walking the path I have laid for you? Please know I'm talking to your heart, it is true.
A great sorrow rises inside of me, for you do not see that I really love you. You are one of my greatest gifts of all, to make it better beneath the sun. You and only your special talents, can do what is foreseen to get done. Are you walking the path I have laid for you? Please know I'm talking to your heart, it is true.
Do you hear me talking to your heart? Weather it be great or small, know it is, it truly is, true.

Hi, I would just like to wish everyone a Happy Thanksgiving And a big thank you to Lynn Orloff ( aka..The Rhyming Machine ) for her keen eye/good suggestions.
Thankful © words by C. Stewart ( Nov. 19, 2007 )
Even though I ain't got stuffing On this old stale bun I'm eatin' turkey burgers Thanksgiving sure is fun
CHORUS... Sure got a lot to be thankful for Glad I'm not sleepin' on the floor no more I got a bed, and a roof over my head I ain't dead, I got a half a loaf of bread Sure got a lot to be thankful for
Even though I ain't got money An my cars in the ditch I still remember how to laugh That's what makes me rich
CHORUS... Sure got a lot to be thankful for Glad I'm not sleepin' on the floor no more I got a bed, and a roof over my head I ain't dead, I got a half a loaf of bread Sure got a lot to be thankful for
I'd like to thank my landlord I'd like to thank my lord I'd like to thank my good friend Who taught me guitar chords
CHORUS... Sure got a lot to be thankful for Glad I'm not sleepin' on the floor no more I got a bed, and a roof over my head I ain't dead, I got a half a loaf of bread Sure got a lot to be thankful for

Here's a little different take on the subject.
JUST A LITTLE .38
by Lee Arten (c)2007 All Rights Reserved
Came out of nowhere, on a run. Sharp and shiny sticker in his hand. Harmin' a woman foremost on his mind. I wondered, later, what I would have done. Without that little Smith & Wesson gun.
It's just a little .38. But its persuasive power can be great. When things are far from right...
He could have kept on runnin' Could have cut me, sure enough. But, suddenly, he wasn't quite as tough. When he saw the Smith's muzzle gapin, And the cylinder start turnin.'
It's just a little .38. But one I'm thankful I can operate. When I'm out and runnin' late.
He might have found a victim later. Another tired woman tryin' to get home. Maybe I made him move a little slower. Stop, think a minute, and consider. Before messin' with another mother.
It's just a little .38. But you'll be thinakful for its weight. When things go sideways in the night...
It's just a little .38...

Here is one that I wrote in 1996 and my school sings it at Thanksgiving Mass. It's very fun and the kids like it and get to snap. It's also a good vocabulary lesson. When I teach it to the kids we learn the meanings of the big words and examine the rhymes.
Too Many Blessings ©1996 J.M. Richardson
1. Too many blessings to count, We can’t enumerate. Too many blessings to count, Too much to illustrate. Too many blessings to count, So let’s just hesitate and say: Thank you, thank you, Lord. (Snap 3 times)
2. Every woman and man, and every girl and boy is given the grace that you send And celebrates with joy! Words can’t express how we feel, But three we will employ and say: Thank you, thank you, Lord. (Snap 3 times)
3. Everyone, sing out his praise! O Yahweh, you are great! Everyone, glorify him! Oh, let’s elucidate. Lift up your hearts to the Lord! Yes, we’ll participate and say: Thank you, thank you, Lord. (Snap 3X) Thank you, thank you, Lord! (No snap)

Once again, a great variety of approaches on a given theme. Thanks to all for participating. Time for a new challenge.

I wrote a quick one on Thanksgiving morning -- forgot about this thread. Not too cheerful, though. I did post it on the MP3 board. MP3: http://www.soundclick.com/bands/default.cfm?bandID=620106&content=songinfo&songID=6001320Kevin ************************************************ Thanksgiving Reggae (c) Kevin Emmrich 2007 (Verse 1) Sittin' here on Thanksgiving Day Trying to be happy for what I have But as I look around, so many have lost their way and I can't help but think that's me gone astray (Chorus) Thanksgiving Day -- Many have nothin' to be thankful for Thanksgiving Day -- Others just want more and more Thanksgiving Day -- When will the children stop sufferin' ... From hunger and crime and fear and bloodthirsty warriors? (Instrumental Break) Too depressing for more verses! *********************************************

Jean: I haven't looked at the new challenge yet, but I'll wander over and see what all the fuss is about (lol), These challenges are a great idea. There is a songwriter section over at the fender guitar forum I belong to that is dying on the vine. Maybe I should try the lyric challenge over there, it sure is a great idea that you have come up with. Thanks for sharing it with us!
