Here's another very rough scratch demo. I'd appreciate alot of feedback...and please ignore the "bump bump" in the song. Just directing the horns I'm still working on it. Thanks. ACTING CRAZY Copyright Roxy Cain http://www.soundclick.com/bands/songInfo.cfm?bandID=741171&songID=5763755(verse) You don't need me to explain nothing You act like you never understood Well you did me wrong, left me alone and the thrill is gone baby I took that long as I could Get back, back, don't need you to hold me now I use to want you bad but that't all in the past See I gave you all of me and tried to make you see without r-e-s-p-e-c-t What I felt, it just couldn't last (chorus) So, why are you acting crazy Keep doing what you always did before I'm not important baby Remember you said so Why are you acting crazy You said if I don't like it hit the door I thought I was your baby But now you reap what you sow (verse) I ain't discussing nothing Now you wanna talk and you say your love is oh so strong You wanna reminisce, you say it's me you miss, well I'll leave you with this, you had my love for years But now it's gone, gone, love is… You're acting crazy baby (bridge) Baby ain't this crazy Remember how I cried and you walked away I didn't understand that Why do your baby that way (back to verse 2)

Roxy.....I'm old time country, but I absolutely love this sound. I'm dancin' all over the bedroom here. That Barry White ghost in there melts my heart. Do it again, Girl.

Roxy, Very funky, I liked it. You have a nice voice too, perfect for this sort of song. The only suggestion that I have is to accentuate the hook. I'm not completely sure how, but maybe you could stretch it out longer. Just something a little more pronounced on "Why you keep acting crazy" to get it stuck in people's heads. Well done.

Dig it, Roxy Can't offer any suggestions as it is too removed from what I know - but I dig it! I even liked the talking at the beginning and end. And your brother adds a very nice touch. Very cool..... Scott

Hi Roxy,
You can tell by what I write that it's mostly country, and some gospel. But, I really apreciate any music that isn't about hate. I really like this one. I think you tried your wings, and it works. Keep pushing the envelope. Get this one out there.

Derek I'm glad you like this one. Music is music to me...regardless of the genre. I like any kind, just kind of lean toward 3 or 4 specific ones. Thanks for your comments. Roxy http://www.soundclick.com/roxycain

Roxy, this is the kind of music I grew up on. Love it. You've got some cliches in the lyrics.....like reap what you sow, that could be changed lyrically to something different. The sound needs to stay just like it is. You have a great voice. Welcome to the boards. You rock.

By the way, we are having the Red River Revel Music Conference in Shreveport, LA that begins Sept 29th and runs through Oct 6th. There is an open mic/songwriter session from 7:30 PM to 9 PM onstage behind the Barnwell Center. Come on over and perform a couple of your Soundclick songs!!

Hi Roxy Just want to stop in and say I enjoyed the listen. You have a great voice, band and very dancable sound. I'm sure you have a nice following. As far as the song goes, you've tapped into so many of the sounds that make your genre and done this well. This is where though, for me as a writer and listener, it falls a little short. I'd like to see you reach for something new and different as you go forward and write. Make your own cliches, if you will. You have talent. Be brave. jm

Roxy, Are you sure that you're not related to Billy Withers? You have that Funky sound down to a sience and I loved it. Brought back my youthful days in North Minneapolis listening and dancing to many funk fusion type bands. And heck, I even played this style for many years as a basist, imagine that. You definately have a great groove going on. It's the heart of the city that makes your song so good. Like I said, Billy would be proud of you and as I recall his back up band played much your style which I truly enjoy. It's alive with activity and takes the negatives of society away. I can only hope that you're playing out in the clubs with your music my dear,, and I mean that!! It's that good. Good luck! BOB

Man, Roxy, play this one OUT! This is great stuff! What I love most (besides that it's just plain wicked awesome funk-which I love) is how the hook plays off that saying that "Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again expecting different results." I also LOVE that she's calling him on it. Hey, you said if I don't like it I should leave, so I'm leaving, hello? what's the problem?? I love that whole attitude!! LOVED your brother's voice in there trying to talk at her, and the responses. Very fun and funny. That all is working very well. Loved the nod to Aretha too (RESPECT). I wonder though if you'll need to pay a sampling fee/licensing thingy to use it--be sure and figure that out before you go forward with it on a CD or something. Don't want it to burn you. IMO it's worth paying a little to keep it in there, because it adds to the fun of the song. I also really liked the instrument build at the beginning. That's really working well. Lyrically you're pretty much there too. There's a few small suggestions I might make. But they're small--go with YOUR gut not mine! LOL. Changes in CAPS: (verse) You don't need me to explain nothing AS IF you never understood ------------- (chorus) NOW YOU'RE acting crazy Doing what you always did before I'm not important baby Remember you said so SO WHY'RE you acting crazy You said if I don't like it hit the door SO THERE I GO DON'T BE SO SURPRISED WHEN YOU reap what you sow -------- On the BRIDGE it would be fun to use your brother's talking, from his perspective, saying something here instead of these lines maybe. And she gets to just diss whatever lame excuses he's using. Otherwise... try maybe this? (bridge) Baby ain't this crazy Remember how I cried and you walked away SO DO IT AGAIN NOW JUST WALK AWAY ONLY I AIN'T CRYING NO MORE, NO WAY Or something like that. ??? I get what you're saying with the other 2 lines--but inviting that you didn't understand, asking WHY is sort of an invitation to discuss with him--and you're CLEAR that you're past the discussion point. So by this point trying to figure him out is past her, she's moved on, and he needs to get with it. So for me, those 2 lines I would rework a little, at least, because it doesn't pick apart to be consistent with the rest of the song. My lines up there have too many syllables! But you could draw out that trumpet/brass da da da da da da DUM a little more for a stronger effect-- IF you wanted to, there's room to. I just feel, that right there, you want a good "OOOMPH" line lyrically that suits that musical hook, with that "Oh yeah?" attitude at its peak. It would make cool even cooler. I added another line to your chorus--that might mess it up musically, I'm not sure--but I sorta liked having that thought in there ('hit the door? OK, I'm outta here'), better than saying "I thought I was your baby" (which could also imply a touch of regret--which isn't what this song is all about). Man, I hope you make it big. Your voice and sound is just SO cool. I'm honored to get to know you! Linda

Hey Linda, thanks so much for all of your feedback. I've been away from the computer for a few days. My mother's still in the hospital very ill and I've been spending most of my time with her. Thought I'd check in and see what was going on here. yeah...I've been thinking about that r-e-s-p-e-c-t line and a few other lines in this song. I'm really glad that you like the song. Hopefully I'll be able to get back to my music and concentrate soon. Roxy http://www.soundclick.com/roxycain

It has a great little groove going. Nice vocals, great feel. The R-e-s-p-e-c-t obviously brings Aretha to mind. If you want that connection, then it is OK. If not, then change it.
Good one.

I hope your mom begins to recover soon, and gets fully well. Bless you for spending your time with her... it's those things that are truly the most important in life! I've had this that and the other pulling me away from my recording time lately so I understand... Hold on tight, and keep on taking good care of yourself and her. Sing to her! Love, Linda

Thank you Heather. I appreciate the prayer. Glad you like my groove. I listen to all styles of music too. Yeah...that's a waa-waa petal in there. It's what I heard in my head (hehehe) when I wrote the song. Roxy http://www.soundclick.com/roxycain

That's a sweet groove you and the band got goin' there. I heard ya tippin' your hat to B.B.(the thrill is gone), and Aretha. Best of luck - but you shouldn't need it cause you got the goods. Love the horns in there.

Thanks Roxy!
I'm a big blues fan, more blues than soul but I like it all!! When I went to college in 1965 my roommate was a brother and he laid a James, the Godfather, Brown record on me and changed my life forever. Another friend had tapes of JB Hutto and some of the Chicago brothers taped from clubs on the Southside. Later in life I met Willie Dixon and his family in Cali and I met Whoopi before she was Whoopi and I knew Alfre Woodard before she was famous. You can't predict who's gonna make it and who isn't, but personality, energy and positive attitude - and dedication - with some luck is a great recipe. Just keep putting yourself out there and good things will start to happen for you - I'm sure!
Pete

Roxy, great news about your mom. Keep on singing to her. I'll keep praying for her over here. Hey if you want I will put her name on the temple prayer roll here in Seattle. PM me if you'd like that. There's an LDS temple right there in Houston... you can call them at 281-376-6804 and they will be glad to put your mom's name on the prayer roll there too. She will be prayed for several times a day by the people who go there to worship. Just, whatever small thing I can do over here to help ease the burden, is all I'm trying to do, no pressure. I care, and I know it's hard what you're going through. Oh--and Pete has met some cool people... wow, Pete! I remember Whoopi saying in an interview on the Actors' Studio I think it was, that she was just plain lucky to be where she was--since there are so many talented people out there trying to make it. Still... man, you're 'da bomb' baby. Praying for things to happen for you in your music too. You deserve it! Linda

Roxy, I missed this the first time around, and I'm glad it got bumped so I could hear it. If you didn't include the stuff at the start and end, it'd be hard to figure out this was a scratch demo. I love the "sampling" of The Thrill Is Gone and RESPECT. I even enjoyed the bump bump bump along with the horns. The groove was perfect. The only line that didn't work for me was "I took that as long as I could". Something about the word "that", kinda weak and it' wasn't clear what it was referring to. I felt what you really wanted to say was "I took your sh** as long as I could". Maybe you should say "I took your.." then have that guitar twang come in ..ant

Linda, hi!
Hey I'm a old guy, just wait when you get older your gonna look back and say that person I knew way back did THAT. People I'd lost track of turn up having done the most amazing things. And there are many who accomplish great things by just living ordinary lives - raising children, being educators, and secretaries. I wish you happiness which is the greatest gift of all.

Guys thanks so much for your comments. Linda, I'm touched by your offer to add my mother's name to the temple prayer roll. Please do. It's hard to remain sane while I'm going through this. Thank you. Ant, glad you're diggin' my stuff. You're right...I did want to say "I took your sh**long as I could". Roxy http://www.soundclick.com/roxycain

good potential here Roxy, you threw me a little curve when I heard the thrill is gone, I said damn didn'tt BB have like the biggest hit ever with that line, and then came the r-e-s-p-e-c-t and then I got it that you were injecting pop culture lines into your lyric, fine for an artist, but most publishers will shy away from it when they are actual lines from a song. I was hoping the music would change a little more at the chorus, but other than that it's on it's way to being a tune with a good groove. Keep going with the horn work, I think those lines could give it that feeling of change it needs added in the right spots. Good luck with it, Moker
