Hi everyone,

Here is some info on the ASC. Hope to see you all there!

The Australian Songwriters Conference is a four day event, being held Friday 6th to Monday 9th June 2008, taking advantage of the Queen's Birthday long weekend. The conference will take place in the luxury of the Sofitel Wentworth Sydney. This beautiful 5-star hotel is located in the centre of Sydney's CBD, close to trains, Sydney Harbour, and the city's tourist attractions.

Although week-long songwriting camps and conferences are regularly held overseas, particularly in the USA, there has never been a conference of this scope, especially for songwriters, held in Australia.

The Australian Songwriters Conference will deal specifically and exclusively with the craft and business of songwriting.

The Australian Songwriters Conference is unique in that it is open to all songwriters, regardless of age, location, songwriting experience or genre. Songwriters do not need to be members of existing organisations, and the conference agenda is packed full of seminars, workshops and other activities relevant to both performing and non-performing songwriters.

The ASC is excited to confirm that our Keynote Speaker and main seminar facilitator will be top US songwriter and teacher, JASON BLUME (Britney Spears, the Backstreet Boys, Jesse McCartney, Collin Raye, the Oak Ridge Boys and John Berry). He is one of the few songwriters to ever achieve the distinction of having his songs on Billboard's Pop, R&B, and Country charts all at the same time, and his songs are included on albums that have sold more than 50 million copies! One of the USA's most respected songwriting teachers, when he is not writing hits, Blume teaches others how to do so.

The conference agenda includes seminars run by Jason Blume on a variety of subjects such as 'Using Successful Song Structures and Rhymes', 'Writing Melodies Listeners Can't Forget - and Artists Want to Record', 'Producing Demos that Demonstrate Your Song's Hit Potential', 'This Business of Songwriting (A Discussion of Publishing; Royalties; Pitching Songs, and More)' and 'Pitching/Placing Songs in International Markets'. A selection of top Australian songwriters in the major genres will also give talks on writing for the local market. There will be a group songwriting workshop, informal Q&A sessions, and nightly open mics and jam sessions. Representatives from major and indie music publishing companies will conduct song pitch/critique sessions and attendees will have virtually unlimited opportunities to mix and chat with the industry Pros over the course of the conference.

The ASC is committed to bringing in Australia's top music industry professionals to run seminars relevant to songwriters and the Australian music industry, including top songwriters, producers, publishers, music lawyers and representatives from all the major Australian songwriting organisations. We have already received commitments from a number of Australia's top songwriters, publishers and music organisations who will attend as speakers or mentors to share their knowledge and advice with attendees during the conference.

There are 'special extras' for Early Bird sign-ups to the conference, including one-on-one critique sessions by Jason Blume, so don’t miss out on this fantastic opportunity to take your songwriting to the next level. There are limited spots available so book early to avoid disappointment.

I am also extending the special 15% discount on all packages to the end of July so book now!

Hi Noel,

We have a songwriting couple from Perth who have booked in. As you can imagine, two Gold packages as well as the airfares is well outside their budget, so they have opted for two Silver packages. They are planning to stay at a cheap inner city hotel or backpackers. On top of that, they have taken advantage of booking while the 15% discount applies, so they have saved quite a lot and they still get all the same conference benefits as the Gold package attendees. Perhaps this is an options for you too.

PS: Although the 15% discount was supposed to end on 25th July, I have decided to extend it for a while longer (although the website needs to be updated to reflect this).

Hope you can make it!

I hope the ASC goes well , but talking to people I've met over the last couple of years in songwriting in Sydney , the vibe I hear is that the price is too much. Most songwriters I met in Sydney are either borderline bankrupt or if they are financial are just as likely to go OS so they can network with people there.

Obviously Jason is the main draw card , but as a comparison Pat Pattison's seminars for two day run at $200 and when he came over with Steve Seskins and gave three day talks I think it was only around $300.

Good luck

Cliff

Hi Cliff,

Thanks for your feedback. I appreciate it. There are always going to be people who will argue the cost of these types of events and I know I will never be able to please everyone, but I've received lots of great feedback from songwriters letting me know that they feel $600 for four days of seminars, workshops, networking with the professionals, song pitching to top publishers, and the opportunity to meet up and network with peers from all over the country, is really very reasonable.

The Conference/Accommodation packages will likely be reduced with the confirmation of the new venue. The Sofitel Wentworth is a beautiful hotel but at 5-stars, it was very expensive. The new venue is wonderful, and more affordable.

Jason is indeed a great drawcard and so too, are the fantastic Australian hit songwriters and industry professionals who will be announced early in the new year.

This is a completely new concept for Australia and I'm so excited to be bringing it here. It is hugely successful overseas and the number of enquiries I've received already (keeping in mind I haven't even started the paid advertising yet) is very encouraging.

Thanks again for your comments and the well wishes.

I personally think its good value ( was just commenting on what I'd heard smile ) and I'll probably see you there. Just started a new job and for the first time in a long time I can't just take holidays / time off when I want to frown. Though this does come with the advantage of not having to spend every second night working through the pile of paper work that comes with running your own business smile I'll have more time for doing what I really want to do ... SONGWRITING !!!

Initially I think alot of people were looking at the initial package prices , though I just had a look again and at the current prices , in order to get the song pitching, you need to have the silver package which according to your above link is $1000 , not $600. I know that you've extended the 15 % discount , but it might be a good idea , for clarity sake to adjust the listed prices appropriately to reflect this.

I may even see you in Texas next year if you make it three years in a row or hopefully earlier.

Cliff

Hi Cliff,

Thanks again for your comments. Obviously I need to make the the package price breakdowns clearer on the website. The breakdowns are currently in the FAQ section as follows:

"Q. How have the packages been calculated?
A. The package fees are made up of five (5) components;

Conference fee
Conference space hire
Hotel accommodation
Food and included drinks
Other hotel charges.

With the exception of the Blue Label spouses and partners, all conference attendees pay the conference fee which is $600. This fee pays for the cost of speakers fees, Faculty, flights, transfers, accommodation and meals, ASC staff expenses, administration costs, insurance, wages, brochures and programs, attendee conference kits (including a conference T-shirt)... the list goes on. We are also setting up some 'follow on' initiatives for attendees to continue with after the conference is over (more info on those is coming soon).

The rest of the package fee is made up of combinations of the other components depending on the inclusions of each package."

...Cliff, I'll speak with my webmaster about how we can make this information more easily seen. Maybe it needs to go somewhere in the opening paragraphs of the 'Packages' page? Thanks for bringing this important issue to my attention! smile

The change of venue will reduce the costs of the other four package components significantly and will make a big difference to the overall package prices, especially for the Gold and Blue Label packages, and to a lesser degree, the Silver and Bronze packs.

If you can see/think of anything else at the website that needs to be addressed please do let me know. Its really important to me that I am seen to be completely open about everything I am trying to achieve for songwriters, through the ASC. I am adding to the FAQ section as I go, and am happy to receive suggestions.

Thanks again,

Hi

Do you think that a Gold Pass would be suitable for someone who doesn't actually have any songs ready for pitching.. who is a little scared of looking like a "wannabe" amongst a bunch of "are-alreadys" etc?

I have been playing guitar and music for 16+ years but only really just started getting serious about song-writing in the last few months. I have written 1 song by myself and about 15 songs co-written in the past but never really stuck with it. Now I'm back and ready to get serious.

A song-writer's 4-day workshop sounds like something I could really benefit from but I just don't know which package option to go for. The only thing, other than accommodation, that the Gold Pass gets you is those "Late Night Jam Sessions (Fri - Sun)".. what are these like?

I live in Sydney so the accommodation would be a bit pointless, although a stay in a resort-like hotel would be a nice change.. but if I go for Silver instead.. I don't get the Jam Sessions.. so yeh.. want to know if it's worth it?

Hi Luke,

The attendees will be a real mixed bunch when it comes to experience and you will find there will be writers there with more and less experience and skills than you. One of the great things about a conference like this is that it will expose you to writers who ARE better than you. Getting better at the craft is what its all about. You will be able to seek out collaborators, network with the pros in a relaxed and informal atmosphere and learn from Jason Blume, one of the best songwriting teachers in the world as well as the other speakers we will introduce.

We all have to start somewhere and every attendee will be there for the same reason. Nobody is going to laugh if your songs are not considered to be ready (and if they do, well they are dicks!) This will all be covered in the opening speeches on the first day so that everyone is mindful of being supportive and considerate.

It really does come down to what you want out of the conference. This event will be a first time experience for most of the songwriters attending because its never been done here before, but I can tell you that in the pitch sessions, you will hear great demos - and really awful ones. You will hear fully produced, blow-your-socks-off pro studio demos, and you will hear vocal-with-guitar-in-the-bedroom-on-the-computer demos. There will be amazing songs with real hit potential and songs that will never again see the light of day. Its all good.

One of the first things you learn as a songwriter is that rejection of your work is not a personal slight against you. And I can tell you that the faculty will be honest but constructive when it comes to critiques - and that's what we all want. That's how we become better songwriters.

The Open Mics for the Gold and Silver attendees will be really cool. After dinner each night, the area will be cleared for this and Ettalong Beach Club patrons will be allowed to sit in the audience and enjoy hearing new original songs too. After the Open Mic, the area will be cleared of patrons and the private late night Jam Sesion will be just for Gold attendees and faculty who wish to take part.

Don't forget there is always the Bronze package which is just the conference seminars. This may suit you if you really don't want to pitch your work but it doesn't include the Open Mics or Jam Sessions.

If you'd like to give me a call to have a chat you are very welcome to. My mobile number is 0412 149 094 and is probably the fastest way to get hold of me. I'd be happy to help you decide whether the conference is for you and if so, which package will best suit your needs.

Yeh.. Just thinking about it gives me tingles of excitement (no.. not like that.. haha). I would really enjoy being able to jam with other musicians as I generally do all the writing and playing myself but at the same time have no major interest in the performance side of things.. I just love music and love playing and writing it equally. I believe I have a unique take on various genres though I am probably wrong.. haha.

I assume the restriction on the Jam sessions is mainly due to needing to be a hotel guest to stay there on the property to that late hour etc.. So I am also guessing that there's not really a possibility of having a non-accommodation Gold access pass. By the way, when do bookings close?

Hi Luke,

You've got until 15th April to pay for your package, but I'm flexible too. If you pay your deposit to secure your spot you can also take advantage of the Early Bird Specials (see the website for details) and don't forget there is a 15% discount for members of a variety of organisations, so again, check out the website for details. If you are not a member of any of the listed organisations, join ISMING at www.imaginotionsongs.net - its free - and you can then take advantage of the discount.

Let me know if you have any other questions. With the weekend coming up, I may not get back to these forums for a few days, so if you have any urgent questions feel free to call me or email me directly at info@australiansongwritersconference.com.au

Thanks for your interest! smile

Hey Lisa,

I just checked out your site, and it gets spookier by the minute......do do do do, do do do do..........

I see you've moved the venue to the Ettalong Beach Club. My Mum lives around the corner and up the street in Ocean Beach Rd. Myself and the family will be junping the Palm Beach ferry on that long weekend and spending a few days up there. And guess where we always go for a cold beer and a meal ? Yep, the outside deck at the Ettalong. ( Good entertainment on a Sat afternoon )

I won't be able to make the conference ( the cost is out of the question at this moment ) but if you see a guy with a stethascope and a portable recorder next to the conference doors.......yup, that's me !

Anyways, good luck with it, I hope you are providing the entertainment for the club that weekend, sould be an interesting mix of people.

cheers, niteshift

PS - am always open to being snuck in, in a road case if you're up for it. smile

Well, you've just got to come over and say hello, Niteshift! Would love to meet you! I'll be racing around like a rabbit the whole weekend, so it will do me good to stop and relax with a drink with you!
