It seems like I wrote this years ago but it's only been a year or so... My oldest child graduated from high school last spring and is halfway through his first semester at college. For a while, I wondered if we'd ever get here.

God Grant Me the Serenity (To Raise a Teenage Boy)
Cindy Miller
(c) 2007

God grant me the serenity
To raise a teenage boy
who thinks a Monte Carlo
is just a full-sized toy
Please give me the fortitude
to make it through the night
when a curfew ends up broken
and I'm not sure if he's alright

God grant me the serenity
to choose my battles well
for my patience and my sympathy
have all but gone to hell
Please give me the wherewithal
to see through alibis
questioning his whereabouts
while he looks me in the eyes

God grant me the serenity
to know it isn't hate
if he slams his bedroom door
Lord, let him graduate
Please give me the wisdom
to impart into his life
so he can make good choices
and come home safe tonight

God grant me the serenity
to let go in little ways
He needs to make mistakes
and learn from them, I pray
Please give me the confidence
to know I've done enough
by giving him the tools he needs
to survive his growing up

Oh I so know where you were at! I have twin boys age 11...right now one is great the other is lucky I still say I'm his mom... crazy and I only figure it will get worse as they get older....and of course just when I think I've got a handle on it, they change, go figure God has a great sense of humor!!

A very nice write...

I surely feel this one. First of all, let me tell you that it is so well written, that I wouldn't change a thing. GREAT...
You have said what we all, as parents, feel or have felt.

Being the Mom of seven, I feel your pain, and also your deep joy and pride. We had five teen-agers at the same time. One year, two left for different colleges the same week.(one more was already at another) I have been where this song takes us. I know the ups, the downs, and the in-betweens. The part about picking your battles is so right. That's what I did, it's better that way....just save it for the big things for when they come....and they will. When I was raising my children, I went by the adage of THIS TOO SHALL PASS...and it does, and just goes into something worse.LOL Now that they are all grown with children of their own, is when I get some payback. The grandkids give them the same grief at times that they gave us. But the best thing is, they also give them the deepest joy. It all comes full circle. Someday, if you're blessed, you'll hear your child say, "Mom, I want to do it just like you". "When you did that, it made me feel special". I have been blessed....and doubly for reading your song. Thank you,

I think this is very saleable. Could see it done in calligraphy as a framed print someone would buy.

Hi again Cindy!

Found you over here too... grin !

Funny you should pen this song right now....I'm at a different stage, but feel I'm going through some of the same emotions. A 9 year old daughter, on the cusp of puberty (it starts EARLY these days!) and a 6 year old who laughed and pointed at an e-card we got the other day, showing a cartoon granny swinging her boobs around like humongous tassels!

With my medical issues, I'm even more prone to guilt -- am I doing enough? Am I doing it right? Are they even LISTENING?
So just yesterday, I was thinking about writing a song similar in some ways to your song -- but written from the POV of the growing child -- and it was going to be called "LET ME BE" -- which coincidentally was just used on the board by someone else!

Either that's a double reminder not to write it, or a clear sign that these coincidences are pointing me in the "go for it" direction. We'll see, don't think the mind can work on much tonight, too tired...

Regardless of all my asides, I thought this was wonderfully written. I especially was drawn to these lines, as I fear that's where I'm going to fall short:

Please give me the wherewithal
to see through alibis
questioning his whereabouts
while he looks me in the eyes

So congrats on a wonderful piece. Keep up the good work!!
