Range Recording Studios in Ardmore, PA has just finished one of the most prestigious tribute albums in the blues genre, titled Rediscovering Lonnie Johnson. It will be available in stores March '08. We would love to hear your thoughts about this record or if you have any stories relating to Lonnie Johnson. Read below for more information on this stunning album or check out www.RangeRecordingStudios.com to see how you can record your music with our team.

There is perhaps no more singular musical device in American music than the guitar solo. From Charlie Christian to John Mayer the guitar solo remains the sine qua non of expression in the popular idiom. Whether we think of Jimi Hendrix deconstructing the National Anthem at Woodstock or Jimmy Page dive bombing on "Whole Lotta Love" when we talk about Jazz, Rock, Soul, Funk or almost any other music made in America the guitar solo stands tall. With respect to that notion, this is the story of Rediscovering Lonnie Johnson.

Blues pioneer Lonnie Johnson made the first recorded single note guitar solo. Before anybody else laid one down there was Lonnie, leaning against the door staring back at you saying, "I was there first." That is quite a distinction and strangely, as monumental as it is, almost nobody seems to know it. The purpose in making this album is to give Lonnie the recognition he deserves.

This tribute album features a talented line-up of musicians, with the majority of them having roots in Philadelphia, where Lonnie Johnson was situated for a number of years. One of the area’s top blues bands, Blues Anatomy, was recruited to perform on the majority of the tracks. In addition, legendary blues guitarist, Jef Lee Johnson, jumped at the opportunity to play lead guitar on this album. To add, well known blues singer Geoff Muldaur is featured on the track “He’s A Jelly Roll Baker.”

Most of the songs on the album were written by Lonnie Johnson, however, all of them except one were recorded by Lonnie. The one original song on the record, titled “Ben Franklin Hotel Blues,” pays homage to Lonnie during the early parts of his career when he worked at The Ben Franklin Hotel in Philadelphia. Regardless of genre, this story appeals to the masses.

Hey Mark! (If that's you!)

Sounds really interesting, and meaningful. Mike Caro would then interest you guys for even just a treat to your ears. (Hear him on our Too Little Time link below on the song "IT's YOU", (The ENDING section of that song)!

Is Joe Mattis still there?

Good luck with everything! Nice meeting with you and your staff a couple of years ago.
