I've been in St. Petersburg for the last year before moving to Tampa; however, prior to that I lived in the Boston area for a loooong time. One of the things I miss about living up there is playing music on the sidewalk in Harvard Square. I'd really like to find someplace in this area where I can do the same thing.
Can one do that here? Is it recommended? Is any sort of permit needed? Thanks in advance for any info you can give me...

Bill, I've enjoyed the buskers around Harvard Square many times. I've got to to tell you, though, I've been living in Tampa since '84...I can't recall seeing a single street musician. Maybe it's just been a sheltered 23 years. Mike Worrall http://www.myspace.com/mikeworrall

I used to do it in Washington, DC (Georgetown).
I've only been in the Tampa Bay area for less than four years and I am not familiar with local legalities, but if I were looking to sing on the street in Tampa, I'd look around Channelside.

Unless you want to visit The Crossbar Hotel I wouldn't suggest it.

The Crossbar Hotel - that's a new one for me. How do they pay?

I spent most of my life in Harvard Square. I truly miss the freedom to exchange music, poetry, words, and sword swallowing that you get there. The time of year that allows humans to be outside in this climate is coming soon. We should just go down to Channelside on a Saturday or Sunday and play some music. The most they could do is run us over and throw our dead bodies in the Bay. Anyone interested? Papos

You can't even play on the streets in Nashvile anymore and it wasn't even 10 years ago when guys like Kenny Chesney and a few others got there start on the streets. I think our goverments think we are subhumans or something because we have a dream and don't think like the rest of t

"You can't even play on the streets in Nashville anymore"
So much for "Music" City. LOL!
As for the guerilla music caper, I won't have a free weekend for a month or so. But then I'd be game. That's the type of civil disobedience I can get into. It might even gain us some notoriety. I bet we could organize it such that some press was present and could document how stupid the rules are. Might shame someone into fixing them. And we'd be freedom fighters of sorts.
Something similar happened in DC a few years back. It was common knowledge amongst the locals that it was unlawful to fly a kite on the National Mall. So some brave souls organized and held a "kite fly-in" on the Mall and (with no arrests) got the law changed.
Hey - maybe we've solved the problem of where to hold the next Chapter meeting. Why not on the streets of Tampa? Of course, we'd have to get Brian's ok, but with an innocent name like "Just Plain Folks" behind the protest, who wouldn't be on our side?

Before we end up getting run over and/or tossed in the Bay, I am in the process of researching the rules o' the city o' Tampa for street performers. They don't necessarily make it that easy to find on their website, but it does appear that there are places in Tampa for which one can obtain a permit to perform and put a tip jar or open guitar case out (for what it's worth, you need a permit to perform in Harvard Square or in the Boston subway system as well).
I will post more info once I've had a chance to sift through it.
