Been thinking about when I was in high school. If you only had one sentence to do it in, how would you describe yourself?
Me:
I was the one more interested in side B of a record, than side A.

What was I like in high school? I was a shadow of the person I would grow up to be.

I was a folk singer/guitarist who had done some public performances, composed my own music and dreamed of being a professional singersongwriter, an aspiring artist, made good grades, and a skeptic.

Always trying to be noticed. Except for my musical ambitions I am the complete opposite now. These boards and the shout box bring me back out of my shell sometimes. Ben

I was the only one in my high school who didn't do drugs...I performed my original music professionally( paid gigs) and graduated a year early.

In high school I was also gigging on the weekends and getting paid (whatever) I didn't talk much though unless I was in a play or on some kind of program. I was always reading something or writing. Got A's and B's and wore sunglasses and hats a lot. The schools didn't care much then. Didn't do drugs. Too cool for that. Thought I had life all figured out. Roxy http://www.soundclick.com/roxycain

I'm enjoying reading these. I should be doing other things but I'm into looking at old photos today. Maybe ya'll can even post a picture of what you looked like in high school. I'm #32. 2nd to right, standing. Here's mine:

I was pretty awful. Didn't do drugs or anything, but I was an annoyingly self-centered little geek who was way too smart for my own good.
Line from a song? Maybe this one, from "Dirty Deeds Done to Sheep":
"They were young, and they'll forget"

I was a cut-up, much more interested in writing and other forms of the arts over math, who saw herself as becoming the next Patsy Cline, if it hadn't been for the intense stage fright.

Joe, we were all self centered at that age-wanting to fit in, not knowing quite where we did fit in and a little bit afraid to fly. Gawky and awkward come to mind when I think about myself back then.

I was way to serious and kept myself occupied with a wide variety of interests and "painfully shy around boys" (so they told me at the 25 year reunion). (Mike----the book is in the car----keep forgetting to stop by the post office, but I will mail it----promise) I'm the second from the left. Don't know who picked out that awful fabric. We look like a bunch of bridesmaids but it could have been worse. I spared y'all the fuscia gowns with the corsages! LOL singing for the seniors my sophomore year

Right Tricia, That's why to this day high school kids put them selves into social classes or groups. Ex: Stoners, Freaks,Jocks, Socials.Remember the book and later the movie "The Outsiders"? They had the Greasers and the Soc's. In Britian they had the Mods and Rockers. I think that sort of mentality only teaches people at a young age to look down their noses on others. I don't believe that schools have ever intended for this extra curricular type of social education, but it happens and some people use it later in life. Ben

Sub, that's a great photo of you. Thanks for sharing it. I believe you were down to earth because you are now.
Vanessa, I was shy, too. Introverted. I over analyzed everything way too much. Still am like that to a degree. Not nearly as shy, though. Thank heavens!
Ben, folks will always be bigoted and self righteous. Those that are begat those that are. I remember thinking that if I ever grew up I wouldn't be dirt poor nor would I be a snob. Funny what we remember. I was too uptight to enjoy myself some days.

Janice, I admired folks like Linda Ronstadt and Goldie Hawn. I loved the old Motown songs. I wasn't really into country but we only got 3 channels of television back in those days. We only had one tv. We watched what our parents watched. Lawrence Welk. Ed Sullivan. Soul Train. American Bandstand. Hee Haww. Dark Shadows. Batman. LOL!

I liked the country music my folks liked...... I was this skinny weak little twit that none of the other kids liked and every one picked on... Always picked last for team sports.... All the rest of my family were popular... I should have been by default... I spent most of my shool life in the libary.... Towards the end other boys would come seek me out .... if there was a disturbance at school... I was usually the one who supplied the instructions on how to do it... I had no morals and no consience.... Thank God I didn't know then what I know now.

well, let's just say my 11th and 12th grade years were more or less the make it or break it points. had just learned to play guitar/bass, not well at first, but better as time went on. focused more on that then schoolwork and did some community theater stuff, too. really artsy, dressed up like a cross between Prince and Billy Idol; wierd hair-do, trenchcoats, sunglasses, the whole bit. definately 80's and stood out from the others. still that way now, albeit an older version of that high school kid markus stat songs publishing, ltd. Or you can just do this ben. (she's talking about the icon for images in the post box at the top of it).
or just do this:
type:

Ben, you gotta right click on the photo and click "properties" to get the url of the photo.

Ben,
You need to edit one of your replies. Then in that box you will see the image icon. But, you don't have to use that if you just type the . That will work too as long as you get the right address of the photo.

This is way too much trouble for a Saturday. So what if nobody sees what I looked liked at 17. Nobody really knows what I look like now. Thanks Trish and Vanessa for trying to help but I'm just not willing to learn today. If I can cross threads for a moment I have some advice for you Vanessa. On your first gig don't put a gallon sized Hellman's mayonaise jar in front of the stage and say to the audience "The more you pay, the better I play". I have a feeling that that won't work. Just my opinion. Thanks ladies. Ben

SCOTT! It got you where you were going, right? My Dad had a some little old blue Chevy. I can't remember the make on it but you filled it up with oil and checked the gas every fifty miles or so. It was a 3 speed. Ran it off in ditches and everything. Didn't matter because it was beat up anyway.

Tricia,
This may be the coolest thread put up here in quite a while! Way to go! Will get a picture up in a few days (somewhere between lawyers and insurance companies from the accident last week).
In high school, I was a true dichotomy. I was shy, introverted, and as naive as the day is long. If I had gotten to first base with a girl, I'm sure I wouod have been thrown out trying to steal second base! Heck, I wouldn't have known where second base was! But, in 1962 (sophomore), I started playing gigs for money. I wanted to be that popular guy that everyone liked, but I was too naive and intimidated. When I was on stage, I was a clown. Once I left the stage, I was a manequin (sic?). Practiced guitar 4 -6 hours EVERY day without fail.
So, in a sentence: Naive, scared of the world, longed for recognition, too scared to do drugs but found a true love and means of communication in my music.
Will have a picture up soon. Hopefully, I can find the one of me in my very first band in 1962. Great thread!
Alan

C'mon Bill, A person just doesn't really call themself a dumb ass unless they believe it to be true. I can't force you to be happy, but man your negativaty is starting to bum me out. I used to enjoy reading your responses on these boards. Let's enjoy what we've got and dream when we sleep. Ben

Hi Tricia, This IS a fun thread. I love looking at old photos. We happened to have just gotten a working scanner (haven't been able to scan photos for a few years now). Love that pic of you with your team. YOU had great hair! Oh, and now I see the prom picture. You're beautiful there too. But, I just wanna know who picked out your dress? Your Dad? Don't think you could have covered anymore skin there if you tried (well without wearing a veil or a habit) I'm afraid to pull out my 'banquet' pictures. We didn't have proms and we didn't have a football team at my school. I'll find the tumbling team picture though. Vanessa
