We had a song ………..about love gone wrong
that should have stood a chance.
With just an old banjo…… we stole the show
at a whisky river dance.

Swapped the wife’s old car…. for a steel guitar
and a fiddle for the band.
Took the pick up truck ……a fifth of jack for luck
and headed for the promised land.

Got to Nashville town ….and started shoppin’ around
with our little country song.
It was a big surprise ….when they rolled their eyes
and said cowboy's move along.

Take it back to Texas
that's what they said to me.
That backwoods song… about love gone wrong
is ancient history
so Take it back to Texas boy’s
Hey Don’t Mess With Tennessee.

Ain’t nothin’ new ….about the stuff you do
already heard that redneck noise.
It made an awful mess… down at the IRS
for old Willie and the boy’s.

He was out to lunch… with that Austin bunch
braggin’ ‘bout the rodeo.
And never did learn how …to milk an old cash cow
like the boy’s on music row.

Son you ought to see…. the folks in Tennessee
don’t go to hoedowns anymore.
So take your steel guitar ….to a lone star bar
where there’s sawdust on the floor.

Take it back to Texas
that's where you need to be.
That Texas smile ……..just ain’t our style
and it won’t play CMT
So take it back to Texas boy’s
Don’t Mess With Tennessee.

Yeah Take it back to Texas
play the honky tonks for free
Leave the diamond rings… and the limousines
for the next poor want-a-be
Take it back to Texas boy’s
Don’t Mess With Tennessee

Enjoy the neon lights and the bar room fights
and sing about your broken dreams
Take it back to Texas boy’s

fade
nhaa we ain’t got nothin’ for you here
take it back to Texas boy’s.
Don’t mess with Tennessee.

I wish my work tapes sounded this good. My advice is to cut out this:

Got to Nashville town ….and started shoppin’ around
with our little country song.
It was a big surprise ….when they rolled their eyes
and said cowboy's move along.

and this

Son you ought to see…. the folks in Tennessee
don’t go to hoedowns anymore.
So take your steel guitar ….to a lone star bar
where there’s sawdust on the floor.

These parts are musically uninteresting compare to the rest of the song, and they bog the song down. And it makes it sound like you are numbering yourself with the Nashville want-a-bees. If you drop those parts you will have your song- and Nashville might even pay attention. It's a case, I think, where leaving something out is saying more than trying to force it in.

I am serious. Just try it once and you will know instantly that those parts don't add one iota and they take away too much. They are like hanging weighs on a race horse.

Mornin’ Sam,

Thanks for the listen and your take on the song smile

Not sure I agree with you about less being more in this case. To me a song is all about emotions involved.

And this one is about being rejected and I think both the lyrics and music are doing a half way decent job telling this story.

I hear an excited anticipation in the music as this guy is headed to Nashville.

When he starts shoppin’ his song and people just roll their eyes he feels a let down.

To me the music does that and does a good job of expressing what he is feeling in the places you mentioned.

Going from that let down into a feeling of disbelief expressed in the chorus works for me.

I will give it lots of thought and thanks for the sugs. smile

Regards
Bill

I enjoyed every minute of the demo. Great Job.

One thought I had was it seemed that Tennessee was messing with them, not them messing with Tennessee.

Maybe
you don't belong in Tennessee
you won't survive in Tennessee
No place for you in Tennessee

something like that.

I personally have problems with folks laying out suggested lyrics, so I'll understand completely if you "sweep" the lot.

I'm wondering if Sam's concern wasmore for the length of the verses than the lyrics themselves. He's recommending cutting the 3rd stanza from each verse. I think the message in those stanzas are worth keeping. Again...just my opinion.

Best of Luck either way.

Hi Peter J,

Thanks for the listen smile

Yeah the verses are a little long but would take a complete rewrite to fix it and it wouldn’t be the same song.

This ain’t the perfect song but I think some may enjoy it.

The don’t mess with Tennessee line was taken from the “don’t mess with Texas” anti litter campaign.

Some folks may scratch their heads but everyone from Texas will get it.

Regards
Bill

Bill,

the only thing I can say about it, other that what I already said, is this. If you cut the song the way you have it and then take it into ProTools and cut out the parts I mentioned and played it- you would have a damn good song. If you leave those parts in, well, you have something less.
