Yes, Ande, I'm an Eva Cassidy fan.

In fact, I wrote a song about her, "The Bird That Flew Away," that I performed on the 10th anniversary of her passing last year. The basic story of the song is this: I was living in Alexandria, VA in 1995-6 when she was performing at Fleetwood's (as in Mick). I drove there having heard something about her, but could not find a single slot to park in, it was that crowded. But since I didn't know what I was missing (and was poor anyway) I just left. I was going to try again, but before I could, Fleetwood's suddenly closed. I then forgot all about Eva Cassidy until she became famous after her death.

Missing out on seeing her spurred me to go back into clubs and listen to live music again (which I had been off for a while). I had long since given up on my own music too. But I slowly got back into following bands, and made a point of supporting local artists I liked. That in turn gave me the desire to buy a new guitar and start all over again myself. So.....in a very indirect sense, Eva Cassidy is part of the reason I here at JPF.

I have a lot to thank that lady for.

Jeff

Yes Ande, Count me as a fan.
Actually, the original airing of that Nightline story was my initial exposure and turn-on to Eva.
Last summer, she helped me get through my studies at grad school with her soothing voice. So often, her arrangements sound far superior to the original. I love her.
Thanks for setting up this thread. She deserves it.

A definite fan here! A few years back I was visiting with one of my cowriters, Rachel Kerr, in Jamaica and she asked me if I was familiar with Eva's music. At that time I had never heard of her...so Rachel proceeded to give me a whole set of her cds. I was immediately totally enamored. Her voice is one of the most beautiful I have ever heard. What a loss.

Here! Love her music. She had a very soulful and moving voice. The only other person that reminds me of her is Nora Jones.

Thank you so much for sharing Ande!
I am truly a fan. I joined a band once and I was using her arrangements. They truly are unique and different and can make any performer-including me-sound pretty good. They aren't easy but the work is worth it.

I have been a fan for years and recently found out that she could play the guitar great. I thought it was her guitar player on some stuff I heard but no, it was her because I recently found some videos on youtube. That blew me away, too. First time I heard her was "Over the Rainbow" on a CD I got, had never heard her before. I had to pull the car over and stop. Very moving. Like, oh my, wow. What a loss.

It just goes to show that for every mega-platinum pop-tart in the world there are a million Eva's who are so much more deserving.... R.I.P Eva, I just heard you for the first time, and you moved me..Lord only knows how many more like her are out there dwelling in obscurity.

I could never listen to Eva Cassidy for long.
Just didn't ring my bell even though she sang many songs i class as great.
I just spent a long time listening to the line up here, and still can't feel sad she is gone as far as the music goes.
Live, she loses it on just about every note she tries to hold doesn't.
The studio did wonders for her I am sure, and some of her recorings were pretty good.
She died of bone cancer I believe Bob.

Just watched most of Somewhere Over the Rainbow and Time After Time -- excellently done. Are you sure you watched the right videos, Graham? I didn't see her "lose" any notes.

Thanks for sharing, Ande. Edit: She reminds me a little of Shawn Colvin.

I don't believe there are a million Evas, she's more like one in ten, twenty five, fifty or a hundred million, something extremely rare and wonderful.

There's millions of people who sing well, but there's not many who could sing like her. She was the real deal.

I also beleive that anyone who could sing like her could make a great living as an Eva Cassidy impersonator. She would have to have the vocal chops and the look.

Well, Ande, not to go off-topic too much, but I do know another singer with her style, who approaches Eva. She was actually a friend and contemporary of Eva's. Her name is Grace Griffith, and these days she works with a DC-based outfit called Ocean. But you are right, these kinds of singers are few and far between. Her website is http://www.seamaid.org/grace/index.html if you want to know more.

I heard, not saw them Kevin.
Ears are like opinions.
We all have them and they vary a lot.
Cheek To Cheek and Rainbow were the two main ones that clanged for me.

Ande, I didn't mean to diminish her unique talent with the "millions"comment. Just to use her as an example of one of who knows how many talented people in this world who never get the recognition they deserve. {Or in her case, after it's too late.}

no worries, I was just thinking about the actual numbers
I listened to an interview with Glen Ballard http://www.glenballard.com he said he loved working with great voices, great voices are rare. Like one person in 10 million gets a really interesting voice.

Eva was one of them to me.

I was just telling my 14 year old daughter about Eva yesterday. Since my daughter is so much like me (poor thing), I wanted to see if she had the same reaction to Eva's rendition of "Over the Rainbow." I can't hear her do that without tearing up. I played the clip of that song on You Tube. My daughter got misty-eyed, but tried to hide it by saying her eyes were itchey.

Hi Ande

Yes I'm one! her version of "Time After Time" clinched it for me, absolutely astonishing. Goes right through me and leaves me speechless,
Her rendition laid Cindi Laupers too waste... And Cindi Lauper who was a bit of a goofball was an excellent vocalist no slouch whatsoever.
I can tell that rendition was done live and I can hear the gate effect applied to the recording to keep out noise.
Her dynamics are sublime, voice like an angel. If you dont agree get to the ear doctors right away smile

Listen - "Over The Rainbow" which by the way was removed from the Wizard Of Oz (fact) Yes a new director took over that picture mid way and pulled that song.
Could you imagine how stupid you would have to be to even consider that?
Anyway it got put back in smile
And it is so oustanding a song that I swear if Kermitt The Frog sang it my eyes would still become misty.

Thanks!
Peace Mike

Definitely so. I was introduced to her by one of my cowriters, Rachel Kerr, when I visited her in Jamaica. Rachel gave me some of her cds...and needless to say, she simply blew me away. What a loss that she died so young. She was simply amazing.

I'm happy to bump this because today (Aug. 26, 2008) is the street date of the NEW EVA CASSIDY ALBUM!! Yay!!! :-)

The CD is titled "Somewhere" ... and I have it in front of me. I got my pre-order copy yesterday. Obviously, these are not new recordings....they are largely re-workings of archival material that was judged not good enough for earlier release in a rawer form, or in some cases not known about. But great work has been done on these tracks, and they are all good. I especially love the closing title track, but I like all of them.

Who else has the CD? What do you think of it?

I don't have it, but thanks for posting this. It's good to hear that this is out there. I love her covers of "Autumn Leaves" "Wade in the Water" and "Wayfaring Stranger." Even "Fields of Gold" and "Songbird." She was such a beautiful person on the inside and out.

Put me on the list. I am an Eva Cassidy fan. Everything she sang is memorable. Her arrangement of Early Morning Rain is a favorite on my set list and Over the Rainbow has to be the most beautiful arrangement I've ever heard.
wish I could have seen her perform.

Thanks for posting this Ande - I absolutely love her voice. I cry when I listen to her, she put so much heart into every song she sang.

Me too! Eva was a rare talent! My favorite is "Over the Rainbow" I I can't listen without wiping the eyes...
She had such a remarkable way of taking a song and making it hers!
Not many singers can do that...
Knowing her story makes it even harder to listen to the music(for me) Thanks for this wonderful reminder Ande!-Dana

I got an email from her people who are sending me a NEW Eva Cassidy album.. that's right.. they've found an entire album worth of previously unreleased tracks and I'm really looking forward to hearing it. Apparently there's been a lot of different sources for this new music that they've collected and I bet fans worldwide are really going to be excited over it. She's had a lot of hit albums in various parts of the world. It's too bad she didn't see all the success during her lifetime.

I got Eva's new album that her people sent me, and as is always the case it's very nice. It's great that folks found so many top notch tracks of her that hadn't previously been released. It's so unfortunate she didn't get to see the success her work has had and the impact it's had on people.

Her version of "Wade in the Water" is SO amazingly soulful, it gives me chills. No one has a voice like Eva.
