My Memories Need You
Since you moved back to your mama’s doublewide in Plano My dreams’ve died in our double bed Cos I’m crashin’ on the sofa drinkin’ still house Draino Wrapped in the icy arms of regret The past is all I think about, until I’ve fin’lly past out
I was Luke Perry wild and just sproutin’ whiskers And out of all your scripture spoutin’ sisters You were the boldest Parkin’ ‘neath the stars by the old planetarium Hidin’ a pint from your mama in your aquarium Sorry about your goldfish So now wherever you go, where your life may lead you Honey I want you to know, my mem’ries need you
Set a bowl of Alpo on the floor for our old poodle It’s been a day or two since he ate When I microwaved a chimi and some Ramen noodles That mutt and me thought about a trade Then sundown silhouettes, played scenes you and I hadn’t lived yet
Sittin’ in the attic sorting through our old keepsakes Baby clothes and stuffed toys from raffles n sweepstakes Trophies and concertinas Love we could’ve lived now seems like such a loss All I can do is hope forgiveness can somehow cross The lonely distance between us But now wherever you go, where your life may lead you Lady I want you to know, my mem’ries need you
Yeah, sittin’ in the attic sorting through our old keepsakes Baby clothes and stuffed toys from raffles n sweepstakes Trophies and concertinas Love we should’ve lived is now all I recall How long will my haunted whispers echo off the wall Time slowly built between us But now wherever you go, where your life may lead you Lady I want you to know, my mem’ries need you

This is one of those lyrics that if you put it in a time capsule, 3 or 4 hundred years from now the Earthlings, if they are still here, can learn something about Americana in the early 21st century.
I like the hook. I like the "double" plays in the first verse- "double" and "past". What is "still house Drano"? Is that like cheap wine?
"Sorry about the fish" is great lyric invention-the way you used it; and the dog's Alpo looking like the better of the two meals is funny. I've cooked chimichanga in a microwave that turned out about as appetizing as a dirt clod.
I should point out something I know about Plano, Texas. It probably has the highest density of Starbuck's in Texas. It is a very socially climbing town with everyone trying to outdo the "Jones". I don't think you are going to find too many double-wides in that town. But so many there are living beyond their means that it won't be long!

Hey Couch (think I spelled it right and everything ), Tragic story, with lots of fresh imagery. But what happened? Can't feel too sorry for him if he is the cause for the split. ("wrapped in the icy arms of regret" - great line) Interesting too, that you should reference the double bed he now sleeps in alone....b/c the feel for me was hey, you made your your bed, now lie in it. On its own, I think it stands up just fine, I just want to know how you want me to feel about him. Good luck with it, Beth

thanks Joe...if there's doublewides in Scottsdale...there's doublewides in Plano, lol. still house Draino would just be harsh moonshine. I could say 90 proof Draino, too. Beth, the lyric clearly says he's not sleeping in the bed.

Hey Back!
You're splitting hairs, mister....whether he's sleeping or not, the point is SHE no longer sleeps there.... :o
So my original question (s) still stand: 1) was he the cause of her departure 2) if so, why should I feel sorry for him 3) Or is that irrelevant...is this just an "it is what it is" slice of this persons life?
Ciao for now, Beth

Wow, that's a lot of 'furniture' in this song.

Hey Couch
Maybe I am just tired and not thinking clearly. This one just aint grabbin me. I see the story the lines are funny but I can't place what this is. A humorous breakup? or a shakepearian play (think tragedy comedy). Whatever the case knowing you to be capable of better I'll await the next one sorry this one isn't doing it for me. Did like the hook though

thanks folks. aj, sorry it didn't work for you. Beth, I wasn't splitting hairs...what happens in the vss matters. the lyric doesn't say whose fault the break-up was. either way, he has regrets showing he feels his share of responsibilty.

Hey Couch....
Still haven't convinced me that he feels responsibility. In my mind, regret is an an emotion felt because of the loss of something or someone. I don't think it necessarily represents any sort of repentance...he's just pissed because he's not getting any right now....As always, JMO.
Don't want to assume anything, but by vss you mean verses?
Anyway, no matter. I've had enough injuries lately without continuing to beat my head against a stone wall...
Good luck, Beth

Beth, I think you're reading a different lyric than the one I wrote.
