That.... after forty nine years of smoking cigarettes I Celebrated 5 weeks smoke free as of yesterday. And I cannot tell you how much I am suffering, LOL. But the pain will be worth it if I can stay smoke free.

Way to go Bill ! I'm a terrible addict, and admit it. It won't be much longer, and you'll never look back. ( so I'm told ) Damn things are more addictive than heroin, they should be banned. Good luck mate.

I new it was gonna be hard but this is awful. I even had a nightmare last night about it. It's the last thing I think about when I go to bed and the first thing I think about when I wake up. But, hey, 5 weeks and counting, LOL

Splendid! I couldn't be happier for you. It has pissed me off for forty years that they have a license from their government to kill 435,000 random Americans every year, year after year after year after year after year. Makes the terrorists look like amateurs. And that they get you to pay for the privilege of being one of the victims only makes it worse. Makes ya wanna go out and get your own government, doesn't it? Oh, wait. That IS our government that colluded with them to conceal the 740 additives that may or not be in tobacco, which a chemical scientist looked at on a list and said, "I don't even know what some of this stuff is!" Stay strong. You will never say, "Oh, if only I had kept smoking."
There will always be another song to be written. Someone will write it. Why not you? www.garyeandrews.com

Bill,
That's AWESOME my friend! Good for you! I wish we all had the willpower to give up what's bad for our health and do what's good. Maybe you'll inspire some more folks to follow suit!

Thanks everyone
I know this is supposed to be about music success stories here but I was feeling pretty proud of myself, Heheh. I got to say I have been a bit of a basket case for the last month. A lot going on, lots of stress, but I am hanging in there.
I don't expect the Non smokers to relate either. That's OK tho. Just think of the most favorite thing you like to do every day, or you most favorite food, or anything else like that and try to see yourself giving it up....FOREVER.
I do need to put in a plug for the drug I took for 7 weeks. It is called Chantix. after week two I realized I was only smoking half as many cigarettes a day. I don't think I did that on a conscious level either. The drug works by actually blocking Nicotine from attaching itself to the pleasure centers of your brain.
I then continued to take the drug for a few more weeks before deciding on a quit date, after my quit date I also quit taking the drug.
What I am dealing with now is the desire to repeat a process I did 40 to 50 times a day for 49 years. I have suddenly taken that activity away and, believe me, there is nothing in the world that will duplicate that action. My hand still reaches for my shirt pocket where the cigs use to be. it is an involuntary movement on the part of my hand. I trained it well, LOL. I wasn't kidding about the nightmare last night. I really did have a nightmare about cigarettes. What a terrible addiction. It is unfortunate that money and greed is what keeps cigarettes available to our young people. If you know kids that are starting to smoke...I urge you...Please try to get them to stop. I have one grand daughter that smokes, one does not. The one who does not was raised by me since she was a baby. I warned her every day about the dangers of starting smoking and how tough it was to quit. I also told her I would beat the daylights out of her if I ever caught her smoking. More likely it was the fact that she watched me struggle with trying to quit for so many years that kept her from smoking. I saw her the other day and she told me how proud of me she was. That made my day.
I want to add
I figure in todays dollars I have wasted about $166,000 on cigarettes. I have no idea how much it would have earned had I invested it. Imagine what I could have bought with that money.

Bill, Congrats!!! 5 weeks is incredible! Keep it up and have faith that you can do it. I may not be able to relate with the cigarettes because I have never even tried a cigarette, but I can apply that to my eating habits. I couldn't make it any longer than a week on Weight Watchers and I was already off the wagon. I feel like a failure and that I don't have it in me to make it. So your 5 weeks is to be commended! God will help you!! Keep the faith! You will make it and you will feel great! Tammy www.tammyedwards.comwww.myspace.com/tammyedwards1

Hi, Bill, The desire to stop is bigger than the desire to smoke. You are doing great....I have never smoked, but like others here, I have struggled with my weight. I have read that smoking is harder to stop than any other substance, and that the psychological aspects of quitting aren't easy at all. You are showing tremendous courage and strength by doing this. I know a woman who took the money she would have spent on cigarettes and saved it for each day that she didn't smoke. Last I heard, she took a trip to Eurpoe Bill, I can only imagine the stress you are going through. All I can say is...keep asking for support...keep sharing your experiences. Somewhere...you are inspiring someone else to stop smoking. You made it through another day without smoking! Go, Bill!!! Emily

So THIS is why you were such a crank in N'ville!! (Just kidding).. I can relate .. sometimes I just want to eat the good stuff. Did you see what Joanne and I were eating our last morning in N'ville when you and Joe were telling us goodbye?? Cracker Barrel PANCAKES.. Those are the first pancakes I have had in SO LONG.. because of trying to watch what I eat. Good for you.. just try and be strong.. just think how much better you can belt out those Elvis songs now!!! BTW, enjoyed your CD.. I'll have to give you a Quattlebaum review soon. ~~Shelia www.sheliaquattlebaum.blogspot.comwww.gmia.org

Congratulations Bill! You should be very proud of yourself. The first few months are the hardest so grab whatever support is available and stick to it. I don't know what government and community support you have in the USA but down here we have some fantastic organisations and I'mlisting their websites below. With the exception of the phone support, the information is relevent to all smokers trying to quit, regardless of location: http://www.quitnow.info.auhttp://www.quitbecauseyoucan.org.au/http://www.giveup.com.au/Take care and keep up the great work!

Man,I'm proud of you.I tried it as a teenager but never got hooked.I wrote a song about it once,I must dig it out and send you a copy.Never give up fighting the crave cause it will never completely leave you, don't give into temptation to have "just one" cause that one can drag you down.Keep fighting.

That's great Bill! I went cold turkey after 23 years of smoking when I found out we were pregnant with my first child. That was 15 years ago. The first months are the hardest but you'll be happy to know that later it does get easier. Hang in there. It's well worth it.

Hi Bill Ah HAh! This is why you were feeling the way you were on that thread. Listen this business of music is enough to disgust anyone throw in nicotine withdraws and yikes! Congrats! Bill I quit smoking and don't miss it... but I am one of those persons who does wish it was good for you instead of horrible for you. Reduces stress big time, but when your a smoker you stress everyday because ther almost isn't a day that goes by that you dont think about quitting, stressing over quitting lol... There is a great line in by Chris Cornell in a Soundgarden song called "Drawing Flies" Drawing Flies Sitting here like uninvited company Wallowing in my own obscenities I share a cigarette with negativitySitting here like wet ashes With x’s in my eyes and drawing flies "Share a cigarette with negativity" man that is a killer line. I always lit up when I was down, stumped on a song or struggling I would alwya give up and light up.

Oh man, Bill!!! I am SOOOO Happy for you!!! FIVE WEEKS!! I remember when you were here back in July and it was only two weeks then. See??? YOU CAN DO IT!! I have never been a smoker...but believe me, I saw what Dawg went through trying to stop. He was miserable. I'd take the money you WOULD have spent on cigs and put it in a special place. You'll be shocked to see how quickly it adds up...and soon you'll have enough to do something really positive with it? You make me proud, my friend!! Keep at it. Wish I could give up eating! Maybe they'll come up with a patch for that. This IS a success story! You are one of us and this is a huge accomplishment. Hugs, Bobbie
They'll tell you success in the music biz is all about who you know...but the truth is...it's about who knows you. Gallup 'n Dawg Music

Wow 2 1/2 days without electricity and internet and I find this great response
Lots of support here on this. This is great. Thanks everyone. It helps to read this, gives me hope that I can stay strong.
Joe, I wanted to thank you for not smoking in my truck when we were riding around town during Pineyfest.. It really made it easier for me. Thanks.
It's 6 1/2 weeks now..
Bobbie, I thought you might like to know. The last cigarette I smoked was Wednesday (I think July 11th) morning sitting on your front porch watching the sun come up. It seemed like as good a time as any to quit

Steve If I was in your position I think I'd not worry too much about quitting. Cigarettes are the least of your worries. Besides, you don't need the added stress and distraction of trying to quit. But, once you are safe at home it might be easier for you.
I tried every method known to man and could not quit. I don't know if it is a "you won't quit til you are ready" thing or what but nothing worked for me. I then tried the new drug Chantix. It works directly on the pleasure center of the brain that is affected by nicotine. I took the drug for two weeks and realized I had cut my smoking in half. I don't think I did that on a conscious level either. It just happened. I took the drug for seven weeks then decided on a quit day. I took the drug for a couple days after I quit smoking then quit the drug also. I realized in those last few days that I was putting the smoke out before it was finished. I'd find myself looking at the damn thing and thinking, "this tastes like sh*t" then put it out, LOL.
I am not going to say it is easy, it isn't. But it is getting easier every day. I still get the craving, especially in the morning when I have that first cup of coffee. Or, after a meal. All those times that you always have a smoke. Hell, it even hits me at odd times. I'll be doing something and my hand will go to the shirt pocket. I'll get the craving. But, I just close my eyes and take a few deep breaths and tell myself it will pass. And it does.
Hang in there Steve. Then, quit for your kid if you can't quit for yourself. Kids that grow up in a non-smoking house have a better chance of never starting smoking. Plus, they do get affected by second hand smoke.
Stay safe buddy.

I thought I might add a few things to this thread.
You guys.....did you know that tobacco smoke constricts blood vessels. It effects the blood flow to the extremities, hands, feet, and errr!!!!! other places.
As we men get older it is a natural part of aging that we have a little decrease in blood circulation. If you are a smoker you compound the problem. One symptom is cold feet. Other things are a little colder than you'd like them to be too. Another thing it does is increase your heart rate. I have noticed a decrease in my resting heart rate since I quit smoking. I think my blood pressure is lower as well. My wife says my breathing is better also. Especially when I am asleep. I breath a little slower than I use to.
Now, back to the blood supply to the extremities thing......Well, I can tell you. it DOES make a difference. My feet and errrr!!!other things seem to be doing much better since I quit the cigarettes.
Just something to think about.
