Hi All,
For all the folks who couldn't make it, Bobbie worked her tail off to make this year great and it shows. This is my first year here, and the first night was worth the drive, and the admission price. I met a lot of great people, and heard tons of great music. I got to meet Rory Lee Feek, who wrote Chain Of Love, done by Clay Walker. I thanked him for bringing me to tears hundreds of times, every time I heard it play. If I ever get one on the air like that, I'll be a very satisfied songwriter. I got to hear Rocke Lynne perform some of his already released songs, plus some of his new ones. My kind of country singer. He also told us a lot about his life, and the secrets to getting where he is today. Rory did the same. Both are very inspirational speakers. Two of the songwriters who work for him, plus his wife, did a round of singing. It's nice to here what's going on in songwriting in town today. Then Barbara Cloyd ran an open mike for the singer/songwriters that was a treat. I'd heard a lot of the songs on the MP3 forum, or read the lyrics. Seeing them done live was so much better. If I went into all the great stuff I heard, I'd be here writing all night. I need my rest for tomorrow. Thanks to Bobbie, Barbara, Rory, Rockie, Lyrix, and all the folks that made this possible.

Hi John and other "Pineyfest" attendees:
You guys really make me envious but I hope you are really enjoying the experience and networking there. Not too far from my old Brentwood home. Reminds me how much I miss Tennessee.
Thanks for sharing. Have fun and keep us posted.
All my best,

Hi All,
Just in from another great day of Pineyfesting. We had very interesting speakers all day long, I really learned a lot more about the ins and outs of Nashville. Bobbie booked in some great people. Then over to the Bluebird for JPF nite and some more great songwriters in the round. That was a real treat. Then Bobbie hung out with me for the next show because I wanted to meet Davd Olney, one of the next acts. I found out just before I came down that he just started to co-write with a guy in Scotland I'm just starting to co-write with. Also playing there tonite was Steve Earle's son, Justin. It was well worth seeing both acts. They really put their heart into their music. This will be my last update till I get home. I'm leaving for NJ after the speakers tomorrow. I'll try to post something Sat. morning.

The highlight for me besides listening to Rockie, Rory, Joey and company, was that I got to partner with Joanne Lurgio and Shelia Quattlebaum {2 wonderful and talented ladies} in our open mic round. Our round rocked!

I'll second what John said! The speakers were awesome. Jason Matthews gave us an in-depth look at the songwriting biz from the inside. The session went way over time cuz of his willingness to take questions from us.
The panel was very enlightening. They have all been involved in so many successes!
Pat Luboff was great! She is all about the nitty gritty parts of songwriting. I am definitely ordering her books my next payday!
I didn't make it to the Bluebird last night cuz I was beat, but I know that it was HOT!
Wish you were here!

Hi Brian,
Thanks, I didn't know that. He said that he, and this Scottish co-writer got together through his my space. One thing for sure, this world is getting a lot smaller. I've been co-writing with a Welchman, doing country and gospel songs, for about 2 years now. Thanks again for sharing your knowledge with us at Pineyfest.
Hi Wyman,
You've been a BAD, BAD, BAD boy!!!
Hi All,
Home from Pineyfest at 5AM. Dead tired, but it was a great time for me. I left at 3:30PM from Nahville, so I missed a couple of speakers on Fri., But everyone I heard was very informative. I learned a lot about the direction the music industry, esp. country, and gospel are headed. Brian was especially helpful with a lot of our royalty questions, including getting paid for internet plays. I'm looking forward already to next year. For all those who had to miss it, we missed you too. Your mantra for 2008, "Next year in Nashville". See you there.

Good job of reporting John. You should apply for a regular job as reporter. Bad--Bad--Bad--- Well John S. ya' see it's like this---With the subject of the song probably referenced, zooming to untold heights of popularity and esteem, it's important to maintain a semblance of democracy with another point of view. Otherwise, a unanimous result might become suspect. So, ya' see it's in the interest of preserving the legitimacy of the procedure that is the point to be considered. Of course the minority stands in danger of being banished to the hinterlands or even further for an indefinite period, but then minorities are used to that. Hey John Selleck, Star Reporter:
Thanks to you and the other Pineyfest attendees for those great posts. It sounds like this "rolling stone" is actually beginning to gather some moss. Keep sharing.
On a different note, you mentioned co-writing with a Welshman. I am curious to know if he is from North or South Wales? Being Welsh, about twenty generations removed, I understand a little about Bards and there is a myth about which part of that wonderful collection of little "kingdoms" is the most musical.
Co-writing with Scotsmen can be dangerous if you happen to wear the wrong tartan.
All my best,

Glad it was a success and that you guys had a great time. Thanks for sharing, John. That's sweet of you.
"Grits is one of those country-boy words that is both singular and plural-like deer, elk and sheep. I think the singular is appropriate when there's a modifier that makes it clear one is talking about something specific. Like, 'Grits are good for you, but these here grits is tasty.'"~~Joe Wrabek

Hi David,
When you get a min., go to Tartarus profile page and give him a PM. He's one of the Scotsmen I'm starting to co-write with. He'll be able to tell you better what part he's in. I'm glad you liked my stories. You'll have to come down next year. It was really worth the trip.

Hi Tricia,
Sorry you couldn't make it this year. You would have loved it. Lots of fun people, and lots of information and connections to be had. I picked up 4 or 5 new co-writers. I'm glad you liked the reporting too. It's been fun sharing.

Nice job of reporting, John!
And it was a pleasure having met you, and a few others who were not present last year. I just want to confirm what John has said about the view you get of the music industry (mostly country music in this case) from those who work in the industry. And many of the presenters and guest panelists were very, very open and honest about the inner workings of the Nashville scene.
Besides the great comraderie of hanging out with JPF friends and getting such a detailed insiders view of what is happening, Pineyfest is a GREAT place to network, as long as you do it correctly. You never know who might be there. Mark Collie (not a scheduled performer) showed up and did a couple of songs and listened to several of the Pineyfesters sing their songs.
I, of all people, was requested to send a CD of half a dozen of my songs directly to the CEO of one of the legitimate publishers in Nashville. She approached by me about that...I did not solicit it. How's that for being cool??!! My songs may never see the light of day if they aren't good enough. But, how often do we get an opportunity like that?
By design...correct me if I am wrong, Bobbie...Pineyfest is organized for the participants to fraternize and become educated by the industry itself. But, the third major benefit is the opportunity to network with people in various aspects of the business. That alone is worth the expense of attending, if you are more than a hobbyist.
And thank you, Bobbie, for putting all of this together. You will never know how much it means to many of us.
And John, good job on the reporting! Also, I'll be working on the music for those lyrics of yours later this week. Good thread!
All the best to everyone!
Al

One Other Thing...
Mike Dunbar's fabulous work on the Demo Derby cannot be praised enough. Everyone who chose to, got a top notch Nashville demo by "the" players. Mike Baker on lead guitar and John Heinrich on steel guitar, dobro, sax, flute and harmonica (whom I have known since we played in a band together in 1979 and 1980) are on many of the hit songs that have come out of Nashville in the past 15 years or so. Willie Rainsford on piano has also had his share of Nashville cuts. I do not know the background of Freddy Satterfield, the drummer. But, I do know that he was great studio drummer at the sessions. And, of course, most of us already know of Mike Dunbar's prolific contributiuons to the Nashville music scene. And you got all of this talent for $100.00 per cut. Mike is generously providing all the engineering, producing and mixing gratuitously.
Thank you, Mike!

Hi John and everyone!! Thank you to everybody who participated in Pineyfest...for your warmth, enthusiasm and all the sharing that took place. That IS what Pineyfest is all about. I am very pleased to hear the positive things about the speakers and the music. I do try to put together a schedule of speakers who speak from the heart and can share their perspectives from the other side of those industry doors. It was a terrific time of renewing old friendships and making new ones; developing contacts and connections with industry folks; learning about the music business...and just plain having fun sharing our music. I think JPF also stands for JUST PLAIN FUN!! I sure appreciate John taking time to post this thread...and all of you (present or not) who have responded. Mark these dates on your 2008 calendar: Demo Derby Tues-Wed, August 5 & 6 PINEYFEST Wed-Fri, August 6-8 Now I need to go take a nap!! Sorry it was so hot here! Not a lot I could do about that part!! Happy but tired hugs, Bobbie

I had a great time, and loved pretty much every minute of it. The songwriters and Nashville music industry insiders who spoke were inspiring and provided a glimpse of the machine that is the conventional music industry. There were tips on where to go and how to get your songs to people who could be a boon to your career.
Jason Matthews, in particular, gave some insights into how you can go from low-down to high as a kite, then back down all in the same week! He mentioned his personal experience with this and also told of a few others' plights there in Nashville.
Cheryl Broz told us about a new enterprise she is embarking upon which will provide the terrestrial radio/tv stations with a portal into the internet with a unique scheme which will offer the various parties a "fair" and equitable way to share revenues. Although she was not at liberty to divulge details yet, she indicate that it would be announced on Monday (today). Unfortunately, her topic dominated the discussion during the Christian and Gospel music panel, so songwriting was not really the focus of that discussion, for the most part. While Cheryl's endeavor may have a huge impact on the music industry, there may not be a direct benefit to songwriters, unless they are also performers.
My wife introduced Bobbie Gallup to her old high school friend, Jeff Nelson, who is a Christian artist, songwriter, and producer. Jeff just came back from Taiwan where he performed before 7000 people in the largest church congregation in the world. His live performance was also broadcast live to churches in six other Asian countries to a total audience of over 700,000 people! My wife and I observed a recording session he was producing and then went to dinner with his lady friend (a former New Christy Minstrel) and him.
Rory Lee Feek was a speaker/performer the first night, and came back the next day to participate on a panel. The first night he and Rockie Lynne were both excellent performers and very inspirational speakers, but when Rory sang his song Josephine, where he took lines from some letters from a soldier in the War of Northern agression, I had to hide my face because it choked me up and brought tears to my eyes. That is a great song, in my book.
I heard a lot of great music from the JPFers, in addition to the ones already mentioned who are award winners. I am sure I heard at least a few future award winners, too. Way to go, everyone!
