Hi Folks,

I've had people ask to hear the official JPF Theme Song. We wrote this to be performed at the end of each music awards show with all the nominees singing along each year. We don't have a recording of those performances (they're pretty free lanced with a lot of vamping and a long long jam at the end each time) but here's a simple 2+ minute simple rough demo that Harold Payne, Alan O'Day and myself put together with some nominees from 2002 singing along in the background. Someday we'll do a studio version, but this at least will give you an idea of how it goes. (Update: This is now an updated Demo with most instrument performance and mixing by Mike Caro)

We're All In This Together
Written By Alan O'Day, Harold Payne and Brian Austin Whitney

http://www.jpfolks.com/ThemeSongCaroMix.mp3

Here's the lyrics. They're always posted on the last page of the Music Awards Show Program so folks can sing along.
---------------------------------
We're All In This Together
Copyright 2002: (O'Day, Payne, Whitney)
(JPF Theme Song)

Intro:

We're All In This Together
Bonded By A Common Groove

We Have A Gift We All Can Use
Born To Celebrate The Power Of The Muse
Locked Up In Our Studio Or Jammin' With The Band
Speakin' In One Language Everybody Understands

Chorus:

Cause We're All In This Together
Joined By The Words And The Music
Yes We're All In This Together
Walking In Each Others' Shoes
Bonded By A Common Groove

The Passion Burns And It Won't Let Go
People Try To Tell You That It's Only Rock & Roll
The Road'll Keep You Hungry But The Music Keeps You Whole
Singing For Your Supper Or Singing For Your Soul

Chorus

Bridge

Spotlight, It's Your Night
Standing On The Stage
Daylight, Tryin' To Write
But There's Nothing On The Page
They May Dim The Lights
But The Dreams Will Never Fade

Chorus
-------------------------------------
So there it is. I was lucky to be slumming with two of my musical heroes Multi Platinum Songwriter Harold Payne and 2 time Billboard #1 Songwriter and Artist Alan O'Day. = )

This would be a great song to be played at the beginning of a JPF meeting/showcase.
The JPF national anthem.
Would you have a problem with that?

Thanks!

Jerry,

I don't have a problem with it. It's just a rough demo though. We originally envisioned having it done at JPF chapter events etc.. but our chapter system currently pretty dormant with a few exceptions so we didn't really push it out there.

This is terrific, Brian. Thank you for posting it. But I feel a little dumb about something. This to my ears is a pretty good production...what makes it a rough demo? Aside from the vocals (which could be fine if you wanted that rough-and-ready sound) I dont understand the difference between this production and "broadcast quality." Is it instrumentation, sonics, what?

Hi Brian-
I love the groove, the chord changes, the sound of the singer's voice.
Nice chorus, hits home.
This lyric and music, really complements the theme of JPF's.
How fortunate your are, to team up with such heavy hitters.

Great job!

Brian, What ever happened to the recording of all the different artists singing the verses? I was curious to hear that one too. Sounds good. Glad you posted it!

Tammy,

There were all sorts of problems with that group recording. Some lines were great, some were unusuable. In the case of this version, the tempo is actually different as is the key. So there was no way to use the individual lines that folks sang. (For those reading, we had different awards nominees each sing a line in the song.. Tammy and Jody Whitesides were 2 of a large group of awards folks who participated). But even though the tempo and key was changed, they were able to adjust the background vocals to fit and use them to give a little taste of what the choir sounds like.

We really wanted to have a nice "We are the world" type of sing along recording, but there was a couple fatal flaws in the process that made that impossible. Some day we'll give it another go with a better plan in place to get it right. (For example the second background group vocal was out of timing to work.. a mistake that wasn't the fault of the performers).

The real purpose of this is to be an easy song to sing along with and pick up quickly, with lots of room (after it fades here) for vocal vamping and instrument riffing. Anyone who has been to the awards show has heard this happen. Eventually we'll do a full blown studio recording that will really show off how much fun this can be to sing.

Harold Payne is the lead singer on this. He rocks! = )

FWIW, Brian's post to Tammy answered my question. I get it now. I suppose a tighter, more elaborate production is possible, but I still think this one is good. Something like this I like a little raw....and I can imagine a great wild live version from a JPF Roadtrip event.

Very cool, guys. grin

"Grits is one of those country-boy words that is both singular and plural-like deer, elk and sheep. I think the singular is appropriate when there's a modifier that makes it clear one is talking about something specific. Like, 'Grits are good for you, but these here grits is tasty.'"~~Joe Wrabek

Hi,

I just loved it! The messsage was right on and the song was catchy up & down
all over smile Also the title the JPF slogan is as universal as can be everyone on the planet can sing that and have it mean something to them. Meanwhile the content was all about what we all do.

The sound was great and I loved the vibe and especially the placement of the backing vocals. Loved Harolds voice he reminds me of Don Henley and I would love to get Harold on one of my songs someday.

In the few years I have been here I have taken some songs from the Mp3 board at random on impulse and maybe enhanced it or made some edits to help the writer and then totally surprised the member by re-posting it. They were very happy and also had a sought of new version of there song done for free smile
I so wish I could afford to do that and more, more often for the wonderful people at JPF...

So I apologize as I didn't ask permission but if I did it wouldn't be a surprise!
I sat with the song for a few hours Friday night and only had the mp3 to fool with
I nearly finished smile I was wiped and didn't quite nail the mix.

Here are my two remix & add ons on top of the original track versions....

Sub,
I just listened to both the original and your new regular (I like this one) mix.

Wow, you added some cool instrumental touches! It sounds as if this was a nicely planned "live" production.

I enjoyed the listen. Great job! smile

Hi Jerry, Joice & Michael,

The writers and performers did such a wonderful job on this and the timing of the track was dead on... that is a great foundation on which to build.

Thanks

Thanks!

I listened to the original version the other day.

My first thought was - What a cool song - it's perfect!

My second thought was - Sub could just eat this one up - it has just the kind of vibe he excels at.

Your version sounds great, Sub - love it!

Hi Mike,

Thanks for taking interest in the song. Very nice of you. At some point my hope is to get all sorts of JPF artists to do their own versions of it in many styles and genres. (Harold did a very reggae version of it that really worked for me for example). It clearly pops a lot more than the original file and demonstrates what's possible with what you do. The only thing I didn't like as much was the organ levels which overwhelmed the vocal about 2/3rds of the way through it. If those were turned back in the mix I think it might sound a lot better. That's not to say I am not appreciative of your effort. I think when Harold and Alan remixed it, they were dealing with all sorts of tech problems to get it to the point they were at and they only had a couple hours total to fix it. They had to change the key and tempo significantly of the background vocals and that took most of the time alone. The original backgrounds were HUGE.. we had a 40+ person choir of award nominees in a high end studio singing.. but the key and tempo change (and the second background part was WAY out of timing and they somehow even fixed that.. not even sure how they did it) was so severe that they had to pull it all way back in the mix. Normally this song runs over 4 minutes and there are some huge vocal vamps from the chorus going on, but they cut all that to keep it under 3 minutes. Your boosting of the percussion etc. clearly helps the recording. Can you back off the organ a little in the mix?

Thanks again, nice gesture on your part,

Brian

Hi Brian, Cool! Thanks so much.

I agree the reggae feel works great in this song. It's incredible the things that happen in a session to totally alter everything. Wow 40+ people
I noticed in the original there was an organ but it was kinda buried and never played it's own parts. I agree the level is a bit hot in spots. I also wanna bring down the guitars at the and so the rest of the stuff sits better.

I have a Hammond Organ here so I replayed the organ I added a whole new part to the second verse which I thought sailed. It has it's own hook line, and the level was perfect then towards the end of the verse it starts getting too loud then so on.
I have to take the approach of lowering things as I can't raise the vocal. What's cool is when you change eq on the 2 tracks there is plenty of bass so the highs bring out the guitars & the vocals...

I extended the song by adding another chorus if you noticed, It doesn't have to be too long a song maybe one more chorus passed this would be perfect a little over 3 minutes. 3:20 etc..

First I just enhanced (remastered) it as it was.
Then I thought man live drums would make this so cool. Oh no can't stop now!
I laid into the drums so in the pocket you almost cant tell there are two drum beats playing.

So I added the following things live
1) Drums
2) Percussion (timbale, tamb)
3) Hammond Organ
4) Electric Guitar
5) Slide Guitar

The only thing I didn't add was my bread & butter instrument The Bass smile
Beside the bass on this was great!

In the end section I have to bring down the electric rhythm and the slide guitar
This way the Hammond and timbales will all sit better.
Then I mixed all the live music with the stereo original song. If you put headphones on or listen closely you can hear all the subtle things added that weren't there.

I'm gonna take another pass or 10 at it smile I'll get that organ perfect.

Thanks it was a pleasure.

Thanks!
Peace Mike

Nice work Mike, I especially liked the electric guitar when it kicks in there. And the hammond organ was a nice effect. Excellent drumming too. I'll keep an eye out for anything else you come up with or if you remix it,

What we REALLY need to do is start from scratch, get a great musical track, then go back in and do the vocals and then background. We really wanted this to be award winners singing lines in different voices and styles with the big chorus and vocals vamping over the jam at the end. We had the studio to do it, but some mistakes in planning and a big set back in having a few non-pro singers trying to get their vocal shot really messed it all up and burned everyone out. We need to go back in with specific artists doing a specific line they've rehearsed and then just do a big choir background that has also been rehearsed. We had fun in the studio working on it, but the result didn't work at all. One of the 2 chorus parts was out of sync completely and unusable. Jody and Tammy were there that night along with a bunch of other folks. Such a sad waste of a great opportunity.

Mike, you're always doing something nice for someone. I know that Brian would like to start from scratch but it sounds good.

The starting from scratch is no reflection of Mike in any way. He only enhanced what he had to work with. We need to start from scratch just to get the song right. Mike is hampered by only being able to add to the tracks with all the other stuff set at the levels they are set at. A music track from scratch offers total freedom that you can't get working with an existing file.

Oh, I know, Brian. I was just saying how nice Mike is about jumping in and trying to help. He's always doing stuff like that.

It gave me a warm fuzzy. I thought I'd share it out loud. LOL. smile

In light of the week we've had with the Virginia Tech shootings and then yesterday, with the Blue Angel pilot being killed, it's nice to be reminded that folks actually do things for one another out of kindness and for the pleasure that it brings to them.

Thanks Tricia Brian & Mike

I totally understand what Brian's saying, and from scratch would be the best way.
Also the whole idea of different vocalists like in projects like "We are The World"
kinda thing would have been very cool. Having an alternate version with just Harold singing the lead is nice to.
If ever done in the future I would suggest having each singer picked out like an auditions not live ones but you know who the award winning singers are. And there are only so many lines too sing, so a no hard feelings kinda thing.
Also maybe let each singer do the entire 2 verses and one chorus each this way later you can pick the best line from each to fit the song. Maybe the singer will be better on a line that wasn't planned, maybe smile Also they wont have to be there together at the same time maybe just 2 at a time, less confusion more focus save time & money.

This was not such a waste though because you got the song done, and this version to share and get the idea of the song across to everyone. And what's here was recorded well.
Actually I could have done some severe damage (that means do good lol ) if I had the lead vocal, loop, bass acoustic guitar, and the stereo backing vocals all as seperate wav files. The timing of this is perfect it's a machine so everything builds from that. And Harold rocked it!

Ah! all in good time, one day..

Where is Harold? I may be looking to hire him.

Thanks guys

Thanks!
Peace Mike

We're All In This Together.....that would be the main theme of the song....particularly the 2nd half of the track...where the choirs could be layered..building up to a massive choir...several options spring to mind as well....with a counter/melody/harmony choir singing behind the hook line....of course picking out good strong lead voices as well...to sell different lines of the song..in the first half of the cut..a lot of options here..of course it would need to start from scratch..with a memorable intro..slow build up..different lead voices with Harold as the main man(quite a distinctive voice)..and two part harmonies...there is a lot of different angles to approach with this type of song....potential...if done right...Good Luck...Terry Moore.

Well, I appreciate being mentioned. It was a fun night, at least for me. I had a good time. The funny thing after my first two takes on the line assigned to me, was having Harold lean over and whisper in my ear that he liked my take on the rhythm & flow better than what he wrote with you guys. Then came the re-takes for that line as I'm sure you can remember Brian...

"Locked up in our studios, or jammin with the band" - will be permanently etched into my brain. I shall never forget it.

I talked with Harold today and he said Alan has copies of all the tracks isolated. He's always very busy but I bet we could get them at some point if folks wanted to remix them and play around with them. Even better would be to have a bunch of top notch award winners from diverse genres do their own takes on it. That would be a lot of fun. The song hasn't been technically released (i.e. no copies have been sold, so it can't be covered and released yet) but I am not sure what the laws/rules are on covering a song just for the fun of it and not for commercial release.

A good song that could be covered in just about any genre! Room for all to give their take, I'm sure.

This good song covers key points concisely! Good focus writing!

I listened to the original and Sub's enhancement. I could see Sub bouncing in his chair to this as he was mixing his added parts! (He really gets into mixing songs like a performer on stage!)

Congrats to all involved, especially with the recording issues Brain mentions. Pros "getting it done"! Gotta love it.
Very fitting theme song for JPF.

Now, to hear it in Blues, Rock, Jazz, Rap, Electronica, Spanish! ETC.!!!

Very cool song! Thanks for putting it up to listen to. And thanks to Sub too. smile Sweet.

How 'bout if anyone's worried about covering it, just <ahem> send a wee royalty donation on over to the JPF coffer??

You don't want it to go public domain of course, but thanks for letting it be played with for the time being. That's cool.

Hi Brian

Didn't know it got wiped off the server somehow. I put it back up on the thread above and on this one as well.
The second mix 2 is the enhanced version.

I've still been dying to get back and fool with it a bit more. As I listen to this though it's pretty darn close. That organ isn't bothering me as much now. And the new guitars aren't to to loud at the end, just a smidge.

If there's anything you would like to try now that you have the seperate wav files or anything just let me know anytime.. and bing bang boom It's Done! smile

Mike, You are a genious and a you have a damn good musicians ear for enhancement of a production. That's a gift to be cherished and to be shared, as you are doing here. Thanks for the listen. I love what you have done to the original sound. Idamarie

Cool new update Mike. I am going to send a link to Alan and Harold so they can check it out. I wonder if it's possible to get you the raw vocal tracks and let you have something to really mix and work with? I have no idea what format they have them on. And the backing choir has been manipulated many times to get them to work (key change and tempo change and time shifted). They may be a bit too mangled by this point, but who knows.

Mike,

I heard back from Alan and Harold and both are happy to have you play around with the source vocal tracks if you want to do a clean music bed for all of this. Alan has the source tracks (not sure of the format). If you want to play around with it all, let me know and I'll hook you two up. Both asked me to thank you for taking an interest in the song and for noodling around with it to enhance the basic demo.

Thanks again,

Brian

Hi Brian,

I'm so used to seeing this thread near the top I haven't checked back on it in a while smile

No problem, whatever tracks they have they can send me on a CD. Even if some of the backing vocals tracks seemed off or out of place. I may able to use that in cool way.
I'm glad they liked what I was able to do with the pre-mixed version.
You could even send the rough mix around to the different people via email if you wanted to get specific peoples voices on there etc..

Alan & Harold both are very welcome.
I only wish I was well off enough health & financial wise to contribute more to JPF.
I think JPF is a wonderful organization and I'm happy to what I can & proud to be a part of it.

They can email me anytime

Thanks

Thanks!
Peace Mike

Yes Alan and I spoke today on the phone, real nice guy.
He made me laugh straight away by saying "I would have never have guessed you were from New York by your voice" I said wow really? He said Uh No I was only kidding"
That made me laugh and then he said the drum timing was so good and locked in on the song he thought I used a sample, loop or programmed beat.
That really made me smile smile

He's got my info and is getting the wav files all ready to mail me.

Thanks

Thanks!
Peace Mike
