We're makin' this bed 'Ole Buddy ‘Cos your work on earth is done But we don't want to tuck you in We'd rather relive all the fun
Fifteen years ago you were A newborn blond lab pup You made our hearts feel So happy and full of luck
You learned to heel and fetch And you jumped higher Than any other dog around It seemed you never tired
Children were your pets They’d stop you in the park To rub your shiny coat Rarely did you even bark
You kept an ever watchful eye When the boys were little bitty And guarded our humble home With devotion to even the kitty
No, our boys don’t understand About life and death today But, this pine box and red clay Will help them begin to say...
So long Samson,'ole buddy So long So long 'ole buddy So long
We’ll see you in heaven some day We’ll see you in heaven some day
The tree we plant above you Will remind us of your strength So long Samson so long We'll miss you 'till forever
So long 'Ole buddy, So long.

I appreciate your kind words Calvin. Thanks for reading. I suppose almost everyone has had to say goodbye to a pet at some time or another. For everything there is a season.

V,
Very well written and truly an unfeigned and warm sentiment. I love the personification used in this line:
Children were your pets
I am sorry for your loss, but glad you chose to remember it and preserve the love you have for Samson.
hugs! Bree

The emotions do indeed ring loud and clear in this one......
My friends, love is love, and regardless if it's your pet dog, or your husband, wife, relative, or whoever, the feelings are the same. I commend you on having the ability to use talent to exorcise the pain.

Van, this is one we should all learn. I mean it comes off as a classic poem that teaches one of life's lessons.

Vanessa, My dog "tina" died while i was overseas. she was such a good dog. I hope she enjoyed being around me as much as i enjoyed being around her. i get all teary eyed when i think about it. thank you. it helps to feel every now and then.

Thanks Kaley, 'Snake', John, and Steve. I'm sorry I am so late in replying. Some pets love more than some humans. Samson taught us many lessons about unconditional love and loyalty. Vanessa
