Thanks Jody!

This is such a wonderful video on so many levels I'm glad you posted it.
I love the video and the song... this song would work as a single and/or in so many film/tv spots it's not even funny.

But the thing that hits home most with me is the acoustic guitar. It's sublime!
The thing is so contagious and cool it's a GIANT hook all unto itself.

I hear it once for even 2 measures and it's in my head for a week. smile

Thanks for sharing! And feel free to share the details of it's unique construction.

Thanks!
Peace Mike

That was a very cleverly thought out video. Excellent job, and worthy of the award.

Jody,
I like the wide-format screen. Great love song and beautiful visual treatment by using the graphics (illustrations) in the background to accompany your song story!

Did you do the drawings or did a friend do those for you?
It looks so artistic, nice professional edge!

Also, did you do the whole video yourself, or did you direct it and hire some pros to shoot and edit it? Just wondering how you put this great project together!

Cheers,
Michael

Thank you to everyone who enjoys the video. Terry, Mike, Michael, Russ, Michael...

Mike: I hope you're right for licensing, I've been pushing and pushing, but as of yet, none made. As for it being memorable, well, that's what I strive for when I create something. Would it kill you to know that the acoustic guitar was recorded direct without a mic? The song itself is very simple in parts, 1 acoustic guitar track. 2 tracks of drums, one loop, one kick. 1 track of bass. 1 track of strings samples. 1 lead vocal track and 2 background vocal tracks. I believe that's it.

Michael B: The drawings were done by my dad, Kim Whitesides. He's a professional old-school commercial illustrator. The video was originally concepted by me, and brought to life by Byron Turk. I had drawn out a storyboard of the video using crude stick figure sketches. Originally I wanted it all animated and intertwined with humans like I've seen in some movies - but it wasn't possible on a limited budget. So my dad took my storyboards and turned them into art - he followed them picture for picture which wasn't what was intended, but worked out. In all I think there were 36 drawings we filmed, but only the handful that made it into the video. Byron took my idea and made it work better. I shot the video of the artwork being done - that took 3 days of filming - using Byron's camera & lights. The band shots were done in a day in front of a giant green screen in Byron's backyard at his house. Byron took all the footage and edited it together. The filming costs amounted to about $700. Pretty darn cheap for the quality I got.

You know Mike, it's funny you mention the guitar part is cool and contagious. I've had a few people tell me that I'm a victim of my own coolness with that part. That the guitar line is so mesmerising that they forget I'm singing a song. I'm not sure if that's a compliment or a dig. Either way, a lot of people really like the song and think it's got major hit quality.

Interestingly the guitar part was created some time after a late night conversation with Brian A. Whitney. There was a JPF meeting where Seth Horan had played (he's a smokin bass player/singer) a song that had a lot of slap and pop stuff in it. I don't remember the exact comment I made but Brian made a remark to the effect there was no way I could play that style with that ease. I took it as a challenge, and thus it came to be. I kinda remember now, I said something to the effect that I could play like that if I felt it prudent, or that I could play anything I wanted on a guitar or some stupid thing like that. Anyhow, Falling In was the result. I'm happy with how it turned out.

Really good Jody. I mean everything, the mix, the song and the video. The drawings were great. The original idea of animation with the live people would have been interesting also. Did you see Andy K's "Not Good Enough"? on this board? I know him and couldn't believe the effort it took to animate vs live video. He spent unbelievable hours to create that. I'm sure that would crunch a budget for anyone to hire out. Nonetheless, you ended up with an outstanding product.
Best,
Dan

Jody,
Wow, a "father & son" teamwork project, how cool! cool
And thanks for the great technical outline. Your cost
of about $700.00 was worth every penny! It won you an award
and you get to showcase this song all over the internet.

Now if could just find the right company to License your song for a film, TV show or product ad, that would pay off nicely! smile

Cheers,
Michael

Yes, that would be nice Michael.

I know that the same director, Byron Turk, and I have an idea for my next video. It will be shot in Hi-Def 24p. The idea is a bit more involved and has a bigger budget (than $700). I'm sure it will turn some heads just like this one did. It will be for my song Closer To Ourselves. It's already story boarded out and I'm excited for it.

I have one more video I'd like to do for this current CD, for the song Days of Our Lives. That one will likely cost the most as I plan on hiring a famous actress to be the tabloid girl from the song Searching for You (which won't get a video). We'll see what happens when I cross that bridge.

Wow Jody!
You are are really pushing the "limits" of what indie artists can (and sometimes should) do to promote their songs and acts, etc.

It's nice that you have enough confidence and success under your belt to push ahead like this with fearless confidence. It must be very rewarding to be able to set goals for yourself and reach these new levels of accomplishments! smile

Regards,
Michael
