Due to business and family issues I have been feeling a need for a change for some time now. After conferring with Jerry Jakala the Chapter Co-Coordinator and other key Chapter members I have chosen to pass on responsibility for Coordinating The Tampa Bay Chapter to Jules Dobrowalski. Jules is not only a mature and professional individual but has a true insite into the business of music and we all feel will excell in this leadership capacity and be a true asset to the Chapter as its Coordinator. You all know Jules as he is very active not only in many open mics around town but has helped to promote the Tampa Bay Chapter and given many of us a chance to perform at events he himself has promoted through Church and civic organizations.I know you will all support him as he steps forward to carry the torch that burns so strongly in this family of JPF songwriter/musicians. You have all made important contributions just by reaching out through the sharing of your music and your talents and I will always hold the time I spent as your Coordinator as a very special chapter in my life. Please know that although I feel compelled to step down from the Coordinator position I will continue to be a part of the chapter and available should Jules and Jerry need me for any reason what so ever. I want to sincerly thank all of you for the support and love you have shown me these past five years and I hope to continue our friendships throughout my days.

Dear Al,

Wow. Jules has some big shoes to fill. There's no doubt in my mind that he's fully qualified. Thanks for your exceptional service, Al. I look forward to more exciting times and perhaps even taking #1 back from LA. Waddya say, Jules?

Al,
You did a great job helping to build up such a great local chapter. I'm glad you're still going to be part of JPF. I think Jules will do a great job, too... he's already talked to me and encouraged me to play open mics and let me know where some really good ones are, and he's only been coordinator for one day! smile

Best of luck in your ventures and see you at the next JPF meeting.

Jules, you can count on my continued involvement and support. I have faith in you, and if Al and Jerry believe in you enough to choose you as the new coordinator I will back the decision whole heartedly. Al, a big thank you for all you've done, we wouldn't be here if not for you, and thanks to Johnny G for introducing you and I in the first place. You and Becky are very dear to me. I think our good friend Mr Jak Kelly put it best...this is family. I love you guys.

Jules & I talked for a few minutes during the showcase and he has several ideas that we are going to be discussing & implementing in the very near future. Not only is Jules an outstanding songwriter,he is very knowledgeable about the business end of music.
I,for one,am very confident that he will do an excellent job in his new position as Chapter Coordinator.
Thank you Jules for accepting your new position as father of our musical family.
A real special thanks to Al & Becky for starting this chapter and taking us up to be the special chapter that we have become over the past 5 years.

Wow, I kinda got emotional when I read this Al. Thanks for doing such a wonderful job. You will be greatly missed as Chapter Coordinator. Thank you for making us feel so special. You've done an exceptional job supporting and promoting the artists in Tampa Bay. We're so glad to have you and Becky as our friends and I'm glad you'll still be sticking around.

Congratulations Jules! I'm sure it's very exciting for you to carry on the torch.

Al! You are a true and good leader, and we have been fortunate to have your guidance.

Jules was the one that introduced us to JPF a couple of years ago, and we have really enjoyed all the new friends and their music.

Looking forward to the continued success of Tampa JPF!

Hello to my JPF Family,
I wish to thank you for the words of encouragement. Al has done a superb job in starting and growing our chapter. I hope that I can continue his fine work. I will be asking him and many of you for help and guidance.

One of the things I would like to do is to formally invite the leadership and membership of other music organizations (NSAI, Friends of Florida Folk, etc. to our meeting/showcase. We have been aware of each others existence, but I don't believe that we really know each other as well as we should. If you are aware of similar groups please let me know how I might contact them.

I would also like to have an occassional quest speaker. Initially, I was thinking about having a voice/performance coach give us some pointers on how we might improve our presentations. I have someone in mind, but if any of you know someone, please provide me with their contact information.

Lastly, feel free to contact me on the boards or if you prefer by phone (727-460-7852) to discuss anything that you think can help us improve and grow our organization. Like it says, "We're All In This Together"

Just Jules

Really sorry to see you go Al! You have done an amazing job for JPF and I hope everyone appreciates this. Jules will work hard for this organization and it will be interesting to see what ideas he comes up with for the future. Already, I see good things. But, again, Al, sorry to see you go my friend.

Jules,
If you are looking for speakers to talk about music biz type stuff, I bet there's a wealth of knowledge in our current members. Each of us brings something unique to the party. For example, I know how to take a CD and get it for sale on the Internet on CDBaby and the iTunes music store for less than a hundred bucks, as well as how to take credit cards/ATM cards at local gigs. I'm sure many other JPF'ers already know how to do this, but I'm betting there are some who don't and might be interested. And I'd be very interested in hearing someone else talk about online marketing, and area where I'm extremely weak.

Just an idea.

Richard brings up a good point but, more importantly, a good principle. Many things are probably taken for granted by folks with some experience, but newbies don't even know what questions to ask. And we also don't want to waste other peolpes time in a public arena getting info that only benefits a few. So it's a conundrum.

Jim

BTW, thanx again, Jerry, for the Blume thing.

Richard and Jim have just restated what I've been saying for years. We all keep re-inventing the wheel and making the same mistakes and missing the same opportunities because we don't share enough of the collective knowledge we have. Remember, we are all in this together and what helps one of us could help all of us.

Well, Jim's got a point - if there's only one person who's interested in Internet marketing, we certainly don't want to waste everyone's time.

Still, there's got to be a way. If everyone in the local chapter contributed to the boards here all the time and we could ask each other questions here, it'd be nice, but that's still nowhere near as good as sitting down with someone who's had experience and talking to them.

Might we ask other chapters what they do? Perhaps we're reinventing the wheel by discussing ways to stop reinventing the wheel...

I don't know what the answer is here.
Andy has tried with interim meetings etc. and they died off because of lack of interest.
Maybe starting the meetings/showcases thirty minutes earlier when a guest speaker(be it one of us or whom ever)is going to be there.
I know some will yawn at this but education is the best weapon that any of us can have.
There are tons of things that I would like to more know more about in our chosen profession.
Hopefully I will be getting together with Jules very soon and we will be discussing some of these things.

Someone named run800mgrl posted on the Industry Message Forum about something called Music Talk session (http://www.musictalkssessions.net/). From what I could gather it seems to be a free org for diseminating these sorts of things. I had expected to make some time to research it more thoroughly this week. I could write up my findings here, maybe this weekend if anyone else is interested.

Richard, Jim, and Andy have brought up some great ideas. I am thinking that perhaps we can conduct a survey of the membership to ascertain which topics generate the most interest and also which members or non-members have experience and knowledge in these areas that they are willing to share. Toward that end, If any members have such topics and/or experience please e-mail them to me at jdobrowolski@hxlend.com I will compile a list and coordinate the same with Jerry.

You know, this type of thing doesn't have to be so formal, either... there's no reason that if someone has knowledge that another member wants, they can't just sit at the same table for a while at the next meeting/showcase.

Of course, that might not work too good for guys like me... I'm still learning names, something I'm extremely bad at...

Often we don't know what we are missing because we don't know what's out there and what questions to ask. For example, many of our chapter members are also ASCAP, BMI, NSAI, FOFF, TAXI, etc., members. Some have attended many of the music conferences and festivals offered around the country (I myself have been to many NSAI and TAXI events, Kerrville Folk Festival, Nashcamp, REO Songwriter's Retreat, and other stuff, and am going to the ASCAP music conference in Hollywood, CA, in less than two weeks.) Some have been studio musicians or producers in major music centers. Many have looked into or tried the various promotional opportunities out there (websites, MySpace, Soundclick, SongRamp, etc.). Some even have experience pitching to publishers and labels and have even had cuts. But I suspect many of our members don't even realize this or even that these things exist.

We need to find a way to let our members know what knowledge and experience is within our group. In trading on our different experiences and expertises we may find some new ways of helping all of us. Again, we are all in this together.

Andy

PS: Oh, also, my latest CD "Rock - For People Who Don't Dig Rock" was reviewed in last week's Creative Loafing.

I reviewed Music Talk Sessions. It was big enough and off topic enough to post in a new thread.

I agree totally with Andy and Richard. I bet that with JPF's current hosting software, we could have our own mini version of Wikipedia dedicated to the main subjects you see covered in the boards. As it stands, the collective experiences (at least the ones that get posted) appear in chrolological order in the various forums. In addition, there could be permanent pages listed by subject in which any member could contribute their own experiences and insights for all of us to see. One such subject I'd like to see is a "newcomers" page where joining members could see helpful advice on how to use the boards and the organization to best advantage.

Why not have a few small workshops prior to the Showcase. The workshops could be simutaneous and each at a separate table where members could discuss the topic of the particular workshop. If the workshops were advertised along with the showcase participation in the showcase may increase also.
I for one with little experience know that workshops would be an intersting blend for the day.

We tried that for a few of meetings a few years ago. They were discontinued because of poor turnout and the people who were most interested were also the ones setting up the stage for the meeting, which was occurring at the same time. Doing the workshop before setting up doesn't work because we don't want to leave our valuable equipment in our vehicles (some of which are open pickup trucks). Once the equipment is set up, we prefer to kind of watch it than go off to some corner for a workshop. Plus this makes for a long day.

But keep the suggestions coming!
