Just A Note: These MP3 Files are very low quality. I assure you that all these songs sound WAY better at normal quality.

It's past the season...but I highly recommend the Traditional Holiday winner.
I had to play that over and over this Christmas. It's a great re-take of a traditional song.

Brian,
What talent..."Play The One I Like" by Cheley Tackett just blew me away...also was fond of the Groove Society's A capella song...also noteable for me was Kim McLean, Firemen, Hoo Hah Conspiracy and loved the R&B winner, Nina Storey. Thought Mark Cook really "cooks" with "Blue Voo Doo". Was dissapointed that there was no link to the blues winner, Forrest McDonald, will try to look him up...Anyway what a collection of great songs, fur sure...
Edit: Looked up Forrest, thought I had never heard him, but he played the guitar part on "Old Time Rock and Roll", and has been around a long time. What do I know, advertises "2006 JPF winner on his web site, and links back to JPF. Must be a good guy..

Yeah, that's a cool song by Forrest. It's not for sale on CD Baby. (All but one of the missing links aren't for sale on CD Baby. The one that is isn't linked there for some reason). The funny thing is that the Blues Song winner Forrest and Blues Album winner Mark Cook met because of JPF and are friends now and interestingly enough they shared the same vocalist on the 2 albums that won awards, something I didn't even realize until Mark told me at the awards. It's a small world!

Christine,
Scott Petito is an active producer who works with a lot of well known artists/writers from the Hudson Valley, NY region. He and Leslie won an album award several years ago and they do great work together in general. Scott has produced other artist nominees work over the years as well.

I'm kind of surprised more of you aren't checking this out and commenting. I've gotten a few private emails (3 who loved the song of the year.. 1 who hated the song of the year) but that's about it. It's unlikely everyone would love all the songs in all the categories, but hey folks, there's some really cool stuff here. Did everyone stop being music fans?

Tammy,
The CC, Gospel and Urban Gospel winners were all fantastic this year. We should put out a 5 year CC/Gospel Compilation. You'd have a few entries on that I am sure.

I am all for a compilation CD. It would be great to maybe do a 5 or 10 year one for all the genres. ( I am not sure what year we are on with the JPF awards ) Maybe we could all donate to print it up. Then we could help sell them to keep JPF going strong. Between 40,000 of us I think we could really make this thing happen. Any thoughts from anyone on this?....... Tammy

We've done the awards 5 times over the last 7 years. (1999-2000, 2001, 2002-2003, 2004, 2005-2006). If we don't find a larger sponsor, we won't do it again until 2008. It takes us 2 years to sort through the masses without hiring full time employees to do so which is impossible without significant money. We can only count on volunteers to do so much. If I had a staff of about 4 full time people we could still do it every year. (All the shipping of voting discs etc.. could be curtailed by posting ALL the entered songs on the web.. so if we could switch to all digital that might make it less costly and labor intensive.. but you still have to have folks listening day and night).
We've talked about doing a genre specific compilation many times. An overall compilation of just this year's winners alone would fill 4 full CD's. But having all the different genres means the audience at large won't be as big. But genre comps have a better shot. And we've done this enough years to do it probably if we had appropriate distribution. I've considered doing a Children's Comp, a Holiday Comp (you should do a Holiday Album Tammy) and the CC/Gospel one. Those have specific fan bases that might be reached well. The lowest risk would be Holiday due to less royalties for standards and if it doesn't sell one year, it could still sell the next. Then again, I posted all the winners here for folks to sample for free and barely anyone is checking them out. Only about 75 people have even checked out this page.

Just responded to your blog entry from yesterday before I saw this post. Great idea. I'm working my way down the list and lovin' it.
Being a big fan of a capella vocals AND the band Chicago, I really loved what the Groove Society did.
Thanks for compiling these. Am having fun listening!

Brian, funny you should bring up the Holiday CD. I have actually planned on doing that this year. I just finished an original Christmas song and contacted a producer/friend in Nashville to see if I could get started recording it. The rest will be the standards for the most part. I figured I better get started now to get it done by the fall. I keep putting it off every year because who wants to record Christmas music after Christmas is over? LOL...but ya got to do it sometime. I will be glad to at least have a holiday CD to sell once a year. It's one of those things I think each artist only has to do once. It kind of carries through the years. Anyone else feel like that? I still pull out my favorites by other artist and play the same Christmas CD's each year. I just like to hear certain people sing certain Christmas songs. My favorite of course is Amy Grant. Probably always will be.
But really... let's work on the complilation CD idea for JPF! Tammy

I recognized at least 7 or 8 songs, mostly from the categories I judged. Of those, several (maybe 3 - 4) appear that I actually voted for. Incredible line up, thanks!

Thanks for sharing these Brian! While I haven't heard all the songs to make a comparison I must say that the Song of The Year "Play The One I Like" took me in right away both lyrically and melodically. Really enjoyed. It should be on radio! Excellent!

The biggest problem with doing any compilation is finding a market for it. Derek Sivers told me the best selling compilation CD in CD Baby history sold 200 copies. The CD Baby compilation they did for charity purposes sold less than 50 copies and it was promoted over and over to the entire CD Baby database which is much larger than ours. If they could only sell 50.. my most optimistic estimate would be that we could sell maybe 100 on the site and perhaps 3-5 at each Roadtrip showcase (and that's being optimistic). If we do 50 Roadtrip shows in 2007 that's still only 150-250 copies. The cost of doing the compilation has to first be recouped and then how much income would be made to the group after that? Again, we're using overly optimistic numbers based on the track record we've heard from CD Baby. It's the old problem of marketing a product to other people who make the same product. (You wouldn't sell vacuum cleaners to other vacuum cleaner manufacturers with very much success). I've found over the years that musicians aren't often great music fans. They rarely embrace new music even as much as the average person outside of music. Most musicians favorites lists include artists from their past who helped them develop their own sound. They far less often include artists who are on the charts right now or artists for example that have recently won awards. That's not always the case, but in general it's a trend I have long witnessed.
On the other hand, if we could get some type of distribution, the compilations are far more attractive. The general public really does like compilations with a purpose (like award winners) and if we could find a good distributor at retail level, it could work. Or if we could get it featured on iTunes or similar sites, it might work as well. Though it would be tough for us to make any money from that project on digital downloads because most of these artists already have exclusive deals through CD Baby for digital distribution. I am not sure if we could sell those same songs on a compilation and collect money directly from it.

Somebody emailed and asked me about the low quality of the mp3 files used for these demos. CD Baby uses pretty low quality files and there's nothing I can do about them since I am simply linking to the files here. If we get permission to link some or all of these songs ourselves later we'll do them at a much higher quality. They sound significantly different at higher rates and dramatically better at full CD quality. I think most kids who only hear crappy mp3 files have no idea what they are missing.

Genre compilations would indeed be an attractive option, I think, if properly put together... for example in the realm of electronic music, DJ mixes and compilations of various artists (even lesser known ones) are quite popular. There's also "mood" albums - even cross-genre, the kind you see in short infomercials from time to time. I think this should be discussed at greater length. On a side note, could I be added to the list? http://www.cdbaby.com/zircon2

Brian-- PS: Is there a way to post a link not just to the music file, but to the CDBaby page with the album for sale? I'm sure several of these are going on my "wish list." I bet many more albums will sell for these artists if the links to them are easy to fetch. I don't know my way around CDBaby yet. When I click these links, I get a blank page which opens my Windows Media Player and plays the song. Any tips on how to easily find the albums will be great! Thank you! Linda PPS: "What if Your Butt Was Gone," is gone. The link is broken.

The page can be found if you take the name/number right after lo-fi and simply add it to cdbaby.com/carlau3 in the example of Carla Ulbrich and her song "What If Your Butt Was Gone" The working shortcut for her song is: http://cdbaby.com/mp3lofi/carlau3-08.m3uI just checked it and it's not working. Not sure why either. But it's the right link. Brian

And we'd love to add the all links to their pages too... we just need a volunteer to do it. Anyone interested? We're also still looking for someone to finish the Top 6 Finalist list. Jeff got it half way there.

Hi Folks,
I added a link to the winning Traditional Folk song. It's just a simple rough recording but it's a powerful message from someone directly connected to the tragedy. Check it out. It's Tim Laborie's song "Who Killed Katherine Laborie."
