I would love to see an active Chicago forum since there is so much going on in our area. How many Chicago area musicians check this forum and would like to see it more active? Am I alone in this or is there some interest out there?

Hi Jack
I would LOVE to see this board being used. Look at what they do in the Tampa region. They are a pretty tightly knit group because of it. I don't see why we can't do the same. Even just coming here and posting where you're playing and when, discussing the venue, the crowd, what type of vibe the place has... Chicago is a great city and this is a great avenue for us to help each other. If people saw action here, as Todd said they'd use it. It'll just take some of us to start----the momemtum will go on from there as we talk it up.

Well, so far that's two responders. I was hoping I would see a few more. Anyone else out there in Chicagoland have any comments or desire to make this forum a viable and active meeting place?

We have about 1000 Chicago area members. But probably only about 100 of them are even registered here and less are active posters. If you want the Chicago boards to become active, you have to work to make it happen. Someone has to take the lead like Al Alvarez did in Tampa or Michael Meal did in Buffalo. It can be as good or as slow as you want.

Hi Brian Jack and I are at www.fitzgeraldsnightclub.com every Tues for open mike. We can talk and maybe start teaching people about JPF. You're right, were gonna get out of it what we put in. Would you consider coming here for a showcase if we got the ball moving? This could be a good way to introduce everybody, with a great showcase!!! You really are not that far and you haven't been here in a long time.... Herbie

Well since there are only three of us, so far, that have shown interest, I think the first thing we should begin doing is reporting here everytime we play or have some musical event. It will help to make the forum active, and hopefully others will begin showing interest. I will give my take on next Tuesday, and Herbie, you could give your perspective on it, too. Or perhaps you give a quick update on the Abbey, since I know you will probably go there after Fitz. I will have to get out there and check it out. I hear that it is a good one.
What do you think?
Jack

I think if we knew Brian was gonna come for a showcase, we could get alot of people involved as they would want to be in a showcase and get to play a song for him..It would give us a reason to give them to get involved. Bill F might even let us use the club, if he thought that 40 or 50 people would come and each bring a few peeps. That's a good amount of drinking...It could work... I don't know how well he (Brian) feels and if he's up for it. Without the showcase, we can still talk up JPF and try and get some more action here. We'll talk Tues.

But now we rehearse on Tuesday nights (we're in the same band). Some night when we have no rehearsal, we'll have to stop by again. I wonder if we're met?

Another route to take is to spread JPF's website around Chi-town. An ad in the nightlife newspaper maybe for a few bucks. Get some journalist type to write an article about it, or write it yourself, telling what you like about it. Definitely advertise JPF to other musicians you meet and at places where they go, music stores, instrument stores, at shows you attend, libraries, venues. Burn the candle at both ends and it could get hot in the middle, to the benefit of all. Find them where they are and bring them here so you can find them where they are. Ha! Connections to other people are some of the keys to growing your music and the music scene. Each one teach one. Each one tell one.
There will always be another song to be written. Someone will write it. Why not you? www.garyeandrews.com

Hi Todd We were supposed to play together at uncommon ground for Phylis, but you're wife was sick or something and you didn't show. Ya, fitzgeralds is fun, come on down. I would say that Brian is conspicuously absent from this thread after his comment...I would read into that...he's not coming...well we can see what we can do anyway...maybe he wants to see if that turns out to be anything first...
Gary, good advice thanks

Ah yes, I remember that night. My wife was sick as a dog, and I had to take care of our kids.
Too bad, because I was looking forward to that night. Maybe some other time at U.G., we'll be able to book a show or something. Or I'll swing by FitzGeralds, like you said.

Hey Todd, I know Matt pretty well, and I thought I recognized your picture. Did you ever come out to Molly Malone's when there was an open mic there? Matt and I used to play there all the time. We did not play together too often, but on occasion we might. We would each do our own songs.

Never been to Molly Malone's, but I have heard much about it, of course. He does play keyboards in my band (Hop On Pop), however. And we are signed to his label. Maybe you came out to one of our shows or paid the web site a visit?

I don't know. Maybe I am mistaken from seeing your avatar so many times? I am not sure. Yes, I know he has been playing with your group. Or maybe I remember you from Fitzgerald's. That is probably where I remember you, if you played there in 2004 or 2005 sometime.

Hi all. I check the board a few times a month. I was in the JPF Showcase Sandy put on at Uncommon Ground a year or so ago (Brian couldn't make it so Sandy went ahead with it). Real fun, had a great time and met some great people, networked into some more gigs, etc. Sounds like it's "Showcase" time again!!

Stevan,
How did it go at the Uncommon Ground? I know their open mic is more like a contest with the loudest audience determining the winner. I hope it did not deteriorate into something like that.

Hi Jack,
I've been at Uncommon Ground 2x, once for JPF Showcase, and once for Singer Spotlight Showcase. Both times were great! Very nice and appreciative crowd, great hosts, great sound system and engineer. I have not done an open mic there, but I have heard the same open mic stories you have.......but if that's the game, then I guess you just have to pack it with as many friends as possible.
Hi Bo, Welcome to Chicago.

Just had an idea (maybe caused by my 2nd cup of coffee....)what if a bunch of us "JPF'ers" met at Uncommon Ground open mic night, we all performed, and we all yelled for each other?? Might be fun. More caffinated thoughts.......wonder if Uncommon Ground would let JPF'ers have a whole open mic evening? Anyone have a contact there? I gotta go switch to de-caffe.

Having this 1 active post is already attracting new folks from Chicago.. it proves that activity breeds activity.
I do plan to visit Chicago this year for showcases. We're actually thinking of coming up for a mini-vacation as well with some LA friends who want to visit Chicago as well. (One of them is a previous JPF Female Artist of the Year!). So we will let you all know when/where etc. when we know. I estimate it might be sometime in Chilly February or March.. we can only hope that Global warming will kick in that week.

Hey Woodn------funny
Hey Brian--WWWOOOOO HOOOOO---Very cool---I think a showcase with you here will re-invigorate our Chapter (at least temporarily) Let us know the dates ASAP...With enough notice I maybe could pitch Bill Fitzgerald on having it there. (see above) It is a first class room that can hold up to 400 people (with the tables taken out)They have Feb already pretty much booked.
Email me if you want to discuss off board--It might be prudent to approach Bill now, explain JPF to him and see what dates he has open--and then try and make the date work for you and your friends. I have a few other ideas too.

Herbie,
Though we did have over 100 people at the show in Chicago last time I doubt we'd get anywhere near 400.. the last thing we want to do is have a small turnout and the venue be pissed.. and 100 is a decent turn out.. we rarely get more than 250 at the largest JPF shows and it's been so long since we were in Chicago, I have no idea what to expect turn out wise.

If JPF could get the place, I can guarantee my friends at WGN would hype the event..they are very good friends with Bill

Hey Brian The room holds 400 for big shows with ALL the tables taken out (Which we will not do for our show). I told Kate and will tell Bill if I can get his attention (which isn't easy) that we likely would have about 40 to 50 people playing one song each. I said that most people would probably bring one person with them, so the place would have at least 100 people. I think that's reasonable and I think they'd be fine with that (on a week night, not weekend). I told her we could either charge a dollar or two at the door to pay the sound guy, OR even easier would be to ask the players to tip the sound guy and explain that's his pay for the night. I'm sure no one would mind giving him $2, in which case he'd make $80 or $100 and that would be fine. Fitzgerald's I believe would be happy with the drink revenue from 100 people, since they don't have to pay anything for us to play. If we get a date and Bob can get a little hype going BESIDES what us little guys can do, it could be double that maybe. BUT I think just us Chicago JPFers can easily muster up 40 or 50 people as I said. They will come out of the woodworks when they find out you are coming Brian.
Hi Bob, if that's you that is one hysterical picture. The WGN thing is a great idea. I would very much like to make your acquaintance again and hang out with you

Thank you Jack
There really isn't much to say. Yes I have performed a few times, and I have been recorded with someone else. I have not performed in almost 3 yrs. I went back to work and found I did not have the energy to perform as well. I am still getting requests to record a CD by myself. Even though I am no longer active, I try to stay up with what is happening on this board. I really don't know what else to say about myself lol.

Oh Silent One,
Keep us abreast of your activities, and some night when you would like to get out come to Fitzgerald's on a Tuesday and at least say hi.

I'm like that old song, "Don't Get Around Much Anymore." I'd like to come out to Fitzgerald's some Tuesday night myself but not sure when that'd be. Just don't have the energy anymore after working then doing homework with the kids. Besides, I'm a songwriter, not a performer.
On the other hand, I've been working from home for a year and a half now so it would do me some good to get out of the house once in a while.
Anyway, good to see some activity on the Chicago forum for a change. It's been dead for a while.

Is that a vintage Bob Young picture circa 1970?

Wow Good Luck you Guys! I've come across quite the inactive Maine area too. The only time I see any Mainers besides Pete Larsen and myself on here is when Brian and Linda are planning a road trip here! The not so active members come out of the walls all of a sudden...maybe during your roadtrip you might recruit some to utilize the forum! Take Care, Linda A.

You know Linda, we try to get folks to use the boards. I now end almost all my email correspondence (over 100 a outgoing a day) with a request/suggestion that they come to the message boards and say hi. Less than 1 in 100 do it. Message boards are an aquired taste not shared by the majority. I doubt we'll ever get more than the 25-30% rate of folks registered than we have. I've actually noticed since we updated the boards for some reason, even though traffic has nearly quadrupled, the new registrations have been cut in half or less. It's weird and I am not sure what the trouble is. But the bottom line is we're going to have to accept that most folks just aren't into message boards. (I think many folks have had such bad experiences on other boards they don't want to even give it a look).

Hey everyone, Aloha! I'm still new to actually posting but will do my best on this Chicago board... how cool! Herbie, your set at Fitzgerald's on Thursday night was great and it looked like you were having fun!!!! Congrats on the show... Okay Chicaoans, help me out -- I'm looking for a venue in suburbs for the "Women With Guitars" showcase I produce. We usually do our suburban show in Naperville, but the venue just cancelled our March 3 gig because they double-booked. Any suggestions for a venue in the 'burbs? Any connections? More about WWG at www.womenwithguitars.com Our March 2 show at The Heartland Cafe is still a go... please come out if you can! And finally... Always looking for co-writers; doing lots of coutry-pop/country-rock these days. Holla if that's your cup of tea... Hugs, Kim-Char

Hi Kim-Char. Wow, this board is coming alive with posts, even from a few folks not in Chicagoland. I am not real familiar with what venues are out there in suburbia, but a few folks that play regularly at the open mic at Fitgerald's play suburban venues regularly. I can ask next Tuesday.
Better yet, if you were to come out and meet some folks I think a few of the guys would probably bend over backwards to give you some suggestions.
I listened to your recording of the collaboration with Bobbie Gallup. You have a GREAT voice and your delivery was wonderfully expressive.
Welcome to the forum, and I hope you keep us abreast of your activities here as well as other parts of the JPF website.

Hi Jack -- yeah, Herbie has been trying to get me to come out to Fitzgerald's, but I just don't wander too far from home during the weeknights cause of the kids. But will try soon. Nice meeting you here! Aloha, Kim-Char

I want the board active. Viagra or some other tablet. How about free money. JPF sitcoms. Already had the dancing baby. I come here for information and to get co-writers. Also to see if there are any projects I want to be part of. Where do these people hang out- I'm addicted to myspace. What can these boards do that myspace don't? Throwing thoughts on the table. :0) R

Oh Silent One,
Keep us abreast of your activities, and some night when you would like to get out come to Fitzgerald's on a Tuesday and at least say hi.
Jack S. Hi Jack Just dropped in to do as you asked. Right now, my music is helping me keep my sanity. I have recently found myself disabled and fighting ssdi, ssi and public aid to get help. It has not been the funnest time of my life but it has helped me appreciate music and my writing more. I soon hope to have a myspace page up and running for people to sample a bit of both. Anyway, as far as me getting out to Fitzgerals's anytime soon may not be possible. No transportation and not being able to walk is pretty much keeping me inside my home. It would indeed be nice to get out once in a while, however I am doing what I need to do to keep my energy level high enough to fight. I have fought this for many years and a couple of times it thought it had won. It hadn't and it won't now either. I just need some help this time lol. Anyway, this is more than you want to know I am sure so I will close and say I will get back here to check this board again as soon as I can.
Peace
The Silent One

Hey, Silent One, I appreciate your update, and believe me I can sympathize with you. My wife just went through a period of protracted SSDI stuff. They finally caved in when several doctors, including their own told them that she was disabled and they should stop making matters worse by challenging the fact.
I wish you all the best, and let me know if there is something I can do to help you with your music.

I'm BAAAAACK!!! This is gonna be an amazing showcase at Fitzgerald's, and we can probably easily fill a second venue (like Gojangles). Won't bore you with details of bereavements, injuries, elder care, etc., but I am finally able to ring back in here.
