If you are trying to duplicate recorded sounds from the past I don't think you will be very sucessful. Musicians, studios, recording equipment and a host of things are impossible to duplicate. You should try for your own sound and 50 years from now you will be the one someone wishes to duplicate. Don't be afraid to be original.

A lot of guys from that era used an Echoplex. It was a device that employed a continuous tape loop to produce slapback echo effects. You adjusted the slapback time by sliding the playback head further from or closer to the record head. It was stone age compared to today's stuff, but it was very cool, indeed. You still see them around from time to time.
