Hi Folks,
I'm spending the day watching some Indiana High School Football State Championships. It was 25 years ago when we won the State Championship ourselves and I've been thinking back on how many things have changed since then and also how many things are still the same. After spending time with family we realize that people don't really change that much even though the world has drastically changed around all of us. The same sense of humor, the same attitudes and opinions, the same care and concern is there as it was way back then.
How have things changed or stayed the same for all of you in the last 25 years? (And if you're younger than 25.. then remember how things are now and get back to us in a couple decades!).
Brian

I thought about you when I saw Sheridan won. We played a JV game there one time in late 70's. I remember the really old locker room/stadium?

My teams never won a state champion, but I remember walking the field 22 years ago after my last high school game thinking wow, I'll never be able to do this again. Over the years I'd dream I was back in the huddle and wake up very sad.
Amazingly three years ago I was able to put the helmet and pads on again to play in an alumni game. We practiced for a couple of weeks and even had some of the same people who coached help out again. I think the days on the practice field hanging out with the guys was almost as enjoyable as the game itself. In the first quater of the game I ended up on my stomach and the qb landed on my leg on a 4rth and 1 sneak. We scored on the next play and won big. I finished the game and played a JPF showcase the following day. Two days later I learned I had fractured my leg. I was so pumped I had no idea my leg was broken. We've played a game each year since and I plan to play next year as well. The money we've raised goes into the football boosters club for the school. We bought a weight room for the middle school. My son will be old enough to play in pee wee next year and I'll probably get involved with that. I'm so wrapped up in this game now I had to scramble to get Bills tickets for tomarrow because the game is being blacked out locally. With DVR and the chance to draw up plays for next years alumni game I've been able to learn more about this game than I ever understood as a high school player. Many people think I'm crazy but they don't understand that there is no other game like this and to be able to take part in them is a precious experience. Many of the bands I've been in I have thought of them as my team. I've been able to draw on the experiences I've had in the game to get through many difficult situations. The most important thing a football player learns it that it is a team game. You win as a team and lose as a team. You have to rely on your teammates. You learn to support, motivate, inspire and challange them to work and play their best because your success hinges on them as much as it does you and success in this game as in many life situations inspires a team to work even harder to achieve more. It doesn't surprise me that Brian was on a team that went all the way and won everthing it possibly could. It also doesn't surprise me that he has continued to succeed with JPF.

A lot has changed in my life the past 25 years! First did you team win?
You mention attitudes, humor and opinions and how they remain the same. My friends are constant and they do not change but I have found that I've changed for the better. I went from being a young mom with no education to what I am now, a songwriter who earns a decent wage and finally purchased my first home. I may of accomplished things a little late in life but it's all good and I'm glad for my changes.

25 years ago - 1980 - there were very few personal computers. No one had ever heard of anything called "the world wide web". Songwriters had to physically go into a studio to record tracks for a song. There were no cell phones. They were predicting that, as the use of computers grew, we would become the paperless society. They also predicted that we would have more leisure time & work 4 day work weeks. Lots has changed. Not all for the better, either. But I thank my lucky stars that led me to this day, and my music, my students, my creative path. I give thanks for that! Hi Brian, Yes, the holidays do bring back memories. Thursday I sat at the table covered with dishes that my wonderful Grandmother used to cook (she taught me to cook too). After the kids had gone off to play, a couple tears found their way to my plate. My grandparents were my life back then. It was so hard to see them die. But, her vegetarian dressing is still the tastiest recipe around. I think of her when I make it and of Papa when I make the cornbread. He loved cornbread and buttermilk and HAD to have it two times a day at least----cornbread that is. I make it once or twice a year. But, if my family loved it like he did, I'd cook it everyday I guess. Oh, 25 years ago I thought I'd be going as a missionary to Africa after college. Wrote a song about it called the Highschool Reunion Blues. Today, I'm a Mom writing songs. rd

Vanessa! I need the vegetarian dressing! That is if it's not a secret family recipe. Hey my Mom lives in Maine Linda. She cooks the 'same' recipe. It's easy. 1/2 recipe is one half iron skillet of cornbread. I use yellow cornmeal or the whole grain type milled in a flour mill (i use a juicer with an attached flour mill). But, my grandmother just used the refined kind. She made her cornbread with buttermilk, eggs, the stuff to make it rise, and a dab of mayonnaise (yeah!) Oh, and some oil. I just find a buttermilk cornbread recipe every year on the back of the package. She knew most all of her recipes by heart. Then you chop two onions and 1/2 a pkg of celery ribs. The big whole celery plant pkg. LOL. Whatever you call that it. Saute' the onions in olive oil in the iron skillet before you bake the cornbread. Oh, and about that cornbread you have to put the skillet in the oven at 450 to heat it HOT. Then add some oil or margarine right before you add the batter. Pop in oven quickly. Back to the vegetables. You saute' the onions and celery slowly until brown. The browning or carmelizing is VERY important. She used to never tell anyone that secret so their recipes never turned out as good. LOL. It wasn't until I was around 15 or so that she told me that! For some reason she used to tell me secrets especially after she got Alzeheimer's Disease. Ok, back to the recipe. Crumble up the yellow cornbread into the carmelized vegetables. Then add 3 to 4 cans of cream of mushroom soup (she used Campbell's). The mixture should not be too runny. DON't add any water. The consistency should be kinda like a thick cooked oatmeal. Bake in 375 degree oven until the edges are brown and crispy. Oh, put dabs of margarine all around the edges and top before baking. Gives it a crispy texture on top. Bake for an hour or so I think. I don't time it. Just watch it. My husband's Mom makes a Cajun style veggie dressing. Entirely different. It has mellatones (sp?) in it and pecans and such. But, she IS very private with her recipes. Glad you asked. I love sharing recipes. rd

Ok I just realized you said VEGAN. Oops the buttermilk etc. won't work for him then. My husband's Mom's recipe would work though. Hmm. I think it has that dry bread crumb stuffing mix in it and pecans and those mellatones. Can't remember what else. But it is very good. I have lot's of vegan recipes too btw. A cashew cheese recipe that is outta this world. EASY! And an oatmeal waffle recipe yum yum! I better go get the laundry finished though. Two more loads to go. Sorry Brian for turning your memory thread into a Good Housekeeping thread. rd

Hey Brian, Twenty Five years ago I had just recently been homeless, living in a tent in someone's backyard in a farm community outside of Nashville. My dog Skeeter (this is not a joke, but it is darkly funny), who was my best friend in Tennessee had been run over by a car and I buried him by the side of the road along with a childhood memento. My tent was four miles from the end of the bus line that led to downtown Nashville, but by early 1980 I had just moved to a small apartment which I shared with a guy on Music Row. I was living on about a hundred dollars a week, playing Wednesday through Friday as a single act at a biker bar. Folks from Chicago were begging me to move back, as I had been a fairly well-known singer songwriter there. I was stubborn. There was nothing more to achieve in Chicago. Nashville, as a friend of mine liked to say, was the NFL. I didn't own a vehicle, not even a bicycle. All I had were some clothes and two guitars. I began knocking on doors. Publishing companies, recording studios, writers' nights, hangouts, NSAI, the Musicians' Union, anywhere where there was anyone who might listen to me or even (gasp!) hire me. By the end of '80 I was living in my own two room apartment, sharing a bathroom, about three miles from the Douglas Corner area (it was an area long before the club was there) where I played. I'd walk there carrying my guitar and walk back home after the show, whistling a little tune and thanking God for leading me to Nashville. That was 25 years ago. Wow... lots of interesting stories.
By the way, 25 years ago was 1981. Not a big difference for most, but the 1981-1982 year was my Senior year in High School so it's a big difference for me.
For those that asked, yes, we (Hamilton Southeastern High School, in Indiana) did win the State Championship that year. We were the first team in Indiana History to go 14-0. (They had just expanded the seasons by a game.. the next night another school Carmel so our unique accomplishment lasted 24 hours). We were 47-4 in my 4 years of high school football. We were a tiny school and only had 17 players on the team. Almost all of us went both ways (for those not football savvy that means we played offense and defense.. it's not the latter day meaning for those with less purient minds).

47-4 with most players on both offense and defense is seriously badass.

Safe in a tent 25 years ago? 35 years ago I was shot at three times by a .38 while playing guitar in the window of a coffeehouse in Chicago...so, what's safe? Safe is heaven. ------------------ You have to practice improvisation. -Art Tatum Mike Dunbar Music

I guess it's just my motherly concerns coming out that I have for my son. I was hoping to share some reasons with him to squash the idea of living in the woods. But I guess we can't be too comfortable anywhere! Sounded like a crazy time at that coffeehouse for you Mike.

Your welcome Linda, And Mike you are soooo right about that! Hey Brian, is this your way of saying your team was Carmelized? "...the next night another school Carmel so our unique accomplishment lasted 24 hours..." Was Carmel the name of the town?? I was a little slow getting what you meant there. rd

Yeah.. incomplete sentence. Carmel is another town near us. We won our game and the next night they won theirs.

A LOT has changed in my life.. Sometimes I feel the same inside, like to laugh, be silly, etc.. but I have noticed a lot of changes with my body. HA... my skin is drying, my eyes get worse each year.. gotta constantly watch what you eat.. these kinds of things are NO fun. HA. I have lived in quite a few different places through the U.S. in the past 25 years.. thank God..it's given me more to talk about...I go home, and I find that my family there doesn't have anything to talk about hardly...they don't even seem interested in my life. If they are happy, that's great.. to me it seems like a boring existence. So to me, they have not changed much at all. I don't think I am "better" than anyone...just amazes me at how nothing can change or someone isn't changing at all with everything else in the world changing by the minute each and every day. And then... we all lose loved ones.. I lost my only sibling, my brother who was 2 years younger than me, on Christmas Eve 1991. I don't remember much for about 5 years after that. I didn't care. It was a GREAT loss. I miss him. The scary thing is... I think back to 1984 when I moved out to California .. I think back to 1991 when my uncle knocked on my apt. door in Vegas and told me that my brother had been killed in a car accident... and it all seems like yesterday... time is moving too fast, I think. ~~shelia ------------------ http://www.sheliaquattlebaum.com"You need a car with good tires on it and the right place to eat barbeque."
