Player Piano
I stepped into a tavern, 'long the Texas line and heard a player piano, play My Darling Clementine when I told the old barkeep, I hadn't seen one in years he said, "my granpa built this bar, that's how long it's been here
back then a feisty redhead, played it for a tipjar's share but when coins were slow to drop, she'd let men drag her upstairs when that poor girl refused, a drunken rounder one night he put two slugs in her heart, and one in her side
but oh..the songs she played, could make a spirit rise people pass and hist'ry fades, but the music never dies
the rounder got the gallows, the judge loved that redhead, too the evening of the hanging, crowds filled this saloon somehow around midnight, the piano began to play granpa lied and said he brought, a new one from Santa Fe
but oh..the songs she played, could make a spirit rise people pass and hist'ry fades, but the music never dies"
that barkeep finished his story, I shifted in my stool I asked if he took me for, some city slicker fool just then in the shadows, away from the chandelier I saw hair like shining rubies, then it disappeared
and oh..the songs she played, could make a spirit rise people pass and hist'ry fades, but the music never dies

good, I like ghost stories. I may be missing something but do people "play" player pianos or do they just turn them on?

Robert,
Nice song, it's a sad story. It transitions nicely, a story within a story. I like the last verse best.

Hey Rob,
Don't know if you intended or not but this sang to me just like a Tom T. ballad.
I wish I was more musical and could do more than sing in my head or in private 'cause I sang this as I thought TTH would right from the first line.

Very nice Couch--I did stumble a bit on that second verse, but the rest went smooth. Second line in that verse seems too long, making the last one seem too short IMO--Solid write though--Al
