I would love to see a Recovery Music category added to next year's JPF Awards.

What's Recovery Music? "Recovery Music is a category of music encompassing all genres, in which the lyrics often contain a spiritual message or share experience, strength, and hope from alcoholism and other addictions."

Samples of Recovery Music can be heard at http://www.sunlightofthespiritmusic.com - we have a Recovery Music category in the music directory, along with all the usual genres. Recovery Music isn't a genre but it can be recorded in any genre. Instead, think "category."

If you decide to acknowledge Recovery Music as a category for future awards, I would love to see you accept submissions that are from artists in recovery, not just from artists who write about recovery. (Ask me if that's confusing.)

Okie dokie. That's all I've got. Thanks for this forum.

All the best,
-Gracie

Hi, Gracie,

WOW...cool idea for another category...there's certainly a need for the healing power of music. Another Just Plain Folks member, Susan Lainey, just released a CD for recovery and healing purposes.

Go to CDbaby.com and search for Susan Lainey...the CD is called Serender to Serenity.

Good luck! Here's to the power of healing through music [Linked Image]

Sue is great--you won't be disappointed.
(I didn't realize the CD had a theme!)

Hi Gracie and Thanks Emily and Linda. The Surrender to Serenity Cd link is www.cdbaby.com/susanlainey2 It is an introduction to a series I'm collaborating with a friend on and will be helpful for those recovering from illness , addiction, depression and those in need of relaxation.
I myself have been struggling for the last 2 years with anxiety, and panic disorder, which seems to be affecting more & more musicians as well as others. Recording the CD itself was helpful , I did not do any of the writing on this one. Bernie Tiger felt the sound of my speaking voice would be good, so I decided to give it a go, and it really ended up helping me. I will be contributing to the writing in the follow ups.. Just listening to The Serenity Prayer on this has been helping people. You can buy the disc already, and it will soon be availble for digital distribution. Sue Lainey

I saw something like that on CD Baby last week. I wonder if it was your CD. That's cool!

As for a category, I find songs from a lot of different "genres" that are soothing, healing, relaxing. So I wonder if a separate category is necessary. Then again, there are those sleep CDs where it's pan flute and waves and seagulls, so maybe it does make sense.

(Note: I used the word GENRES, not STYLES. It's in quotes, but I used it. I'm working my way up. I confused a lot of people when I talked about "STYLES of music" on here a while back. I got a whole bunch of replies saying, "What do you mean by styles?" "What are you talking about?" I guess I'm old! But I'm so proud that I am picking up the current lingo! Haha!) --Jean

I used the word category because recovery
music encompasses all genres and styles.

To better illustrate what recovery music is, check out the song samples on my website at www.sunlightofthespiritmusic.com - on the home page, look on the left side for a directory, and click on the 12-step / recovery music listing.

Soothing and healing music is wonderful, but recovery music, while it can be soothing and healing, specifically has lyrics pertaining to recovery.

OK, I feel like I'm getting too wordy. I'm going to shut up now. Thanks to everyone who responded!

Just Plain Quotes
"A lot of people will tell you that preparation is what will make you successful. But I think that people misunderstand exactly what that means sometimes. The type of preparation you need most is the kind that allows you to instantly seize an opportunity, change your course based on a momentary circumstance, and grab hold of the totally unexpected when it happens, and allow it to take you for the ride of your life! That is the kind of preparation that can lead to the most enjoyable type of success." -Brian Austin Whitney
