I know we have debated this here somewhere but for the life of me, I can't find the post. I hope this link works as it ws a revelation to me. Another revelation was the answer to the question as to why I got so many dumb stares from pipers when I asked them anything to do with scales. I am pretty sure it was stated in the can't find post the drones were B flat. This article denies that. The finding of this scale has ben a great thing for me because I have a thing about bagpipes and rock and Roll. I think they work great together. My current noise on soundclick is a Post Saint pat's day romp and I used the scales I found in this article to build it, and believe it is as close as I have ever come to getting a bit of a Highland sound going. Well Saint pat was a Scot you know. Here's the link. http://www-personal.umich.edu/~emacpher/pipes/acoustics/pipescale.html Fingers crossed. I've just given the website a quick glance. I would guess the chanter is set up like a six-hole flute or whistle. The scale of the pipes is mixolydian mode, flatted seventh, which carries over to American mountain music and from there to Bluegrass and Southern Rock. I always thought there were other drone pipes that could be added to the bag to change the key, but this article, on a quick glance, seems to suggest that the pipes are tuned to a slightly sharp A, hence the Bb idea. I'll read it tomorrow when I have more time and comment. Interesting, as usual, Graham. All the Best, Mike ------------------ You have to practice improvisation. -Art Tatum Mike Dunbar Music
You've got to know your limitations. I don't know what your limitations are. I found out what mine were when I was twelve. I found out that there weren't too many limitations, if I did it my way. -Johnny Cash It's only music. -niteshift Mike Dunbar Music

Thanks Mike. Funnily enough, I have used Mixolydian scale a lot when writing Bluegrass, and country rock stuff as I liked the sounds I got. Probably all those years as a kid playing harp along to my Dad's pipes made the changes sem right for my ears. I used it in CC Cowboy as I recall. Chords I used in the latest one were A Bm, C#m flat5, D, Em and Em9, F#m, G and GM7. I figured using only chords built within the Pipes scale, I couldn't go far wrong. Thanks Mike.
