Note: This is a guidelines page and a place to ask any questions you have about the Lyric Award. PLEASE DO NOT POST YOUR LYRIC HERE!!!! Repeat: DO NOT POST YOUR LYRIC DIRECTLY ON THIS POST! There's a link to where you do that below.
2006 Just Plain Folks Best Lyric Award --------------------------------------------- 2006 Lyric Award Guidelines: We are ready to launch the 2006 Best Lyric Award process on the website. If you want to enter, it is free, but you must be a member and registered on the JPFolks.com message boards and follow the guidelines posted there. Here are the rules we have set up.
You and your fellow members will do the screening for the nominations, but we've improved the process after last year to make it easier for everyone. Last year we had 250+ entries, and it was tough for folks to read through all of them to vote on their 5 favorites. So this year, you'll only be asked to pick your 5 favorites out of 50 on 1 page (each page holds 50 lyrics, see last years entries to see what I am talking about). We will award 5 points for each first place vote down to 1 point for the 5th place vote. We'll then take the top songs from each page and then have an second round on the top 50 overall only so that the process is much easier and efficient and every song has an equal chance of being read and considered.
The entry/voting dates are as follows:
April 16th, 2006-May 31, 2006: This is the window to post your lyric. Each member can post 1 lyric in their name. If it is co-written by multiple members, it will only count against 1 member. (the one posting it.) We will need full names given for each writer. We will request full contact info for each nominee once they are announced. You can enter any lyric you wish, except for lyrics entered in 2002 or 2004.
June 10th-June 30th, 2006: We will have voting by actual members on their 5 favorite lyrics (in order) from an assigned page via email once the posting/entry deadline passes. Voting will be confidential. The end date may be adjusted if needed by us to complete the process. But we will give advanced notice if the date is changed. We will take the top 50 lyrics and place them on a final nomination page for final voting.
July 2006: We will post the final lyrics on one page in July and have open nomination voting to reach the final nominees. We will post the info on this stage when we are done tabulating and verifying all the votes. We will announce the nominations on the same day we announce the rest of the 2006 award nominees TBA.
Awards: We will announce the Lyric of the Year winner live in Los Angeles at our 2006 Music Awards.
Voting Requirement: Because we do the awards free, it's necessary to use our own community to help get the mass of lyrics to the nominations stage. Instead of charging you 30 dollars to enter like a lot of "contests", we are requiring your direct participation in the peer review judging process. To make it easy, we have a system to do this which shouldn't require more than an hour or two of your time.
After the deadline has come for entering lyrics, we will email each participant a page to vote on. Each page holds 50 Lyrics. You will choose your 5 favorite in order from 1st to 5th and email your votes to the assigned email address. (Complete instructions will be sent to all participants). When you vote, you will automatically receive 6 points (A first place vote gets you 5 points, so this is 1 better) towards your own lyric. If you choose not to vote, then you can still participate, but you're 6 points in the hole to all those who do. Because you won't be able to vote on your own "page" there are no conflicts in voting for your own lyric in Round 1. We will not allow those who move on to round 2 to vote any further in the process.
If we missed something, or you have questions, please email us here. --------------------------------------- Instructions on how to post your lyric:
If you are new to these message boards, the way you post a new lyric is to click the button on the top right of the screen that says "Post Reply." Then you should PASTE your lyric into the box. We suggest you type it OFF LINE first, in case you have a problem posting, we don't want you to have to re-type all that text again. Use the Copy/Paste function on your computer to do this.
Once you have pasted all the text (which should include full title of the lyric, the full name of all the writers and the copyright date) click on the "Submit New Topic" button at the bottom of the page.
If you need to edit your lyric, you are welcome to do so. You click the icon above the post with the Pencil and Paper. This will open your post so you can delete text, add text etc... You can't completely delete your entire post, you can only remove the text from it. If you need your lyric entry deleted (i.e. you aren't going to enter any lyric) then contact a moderator for their assistance.
Remember, you must be registered to post your lyric entry. This is completely separate from being a Just Plain Folks member and getting the newsletter. To register here, simply click the link on the top right that says "register" and follow the instructions. You will choose your own username and a password will be emailed to the email address you supply. Be sure to remember to type in both your user name and password CASE SENSITIVE or it won't work.
If you've previously registered, but can't remember you password or user name, you can have it emailed to you by clicking the link that says "forgot password?" in the preferences section (under the link that says "profile.")
If you have additional questions about any of this process, please post them here on the Post Marked "2006 Lyric Award Guidelines and Discussion" and someone will answer it for you usually the same day. ----------------------------------- So.. here we go again folks! Good luck to everyone!
Brian

Kathy,
You can still view the nominees and winners linked on the Awards section of the website. They're there.
Keep in mind that every year the odds are far greater to get a nominations in this one category than any other (except the Video which is even smaller). The odds of winning one of the song genres are 1 in 6000. For the Lyric category, last year it was only 1 in 250.. (Not sure how many entries we'll get this year.. 2 awards ago we had over 500 lyric entries).

Hi Brian ya know, I think people (the lurkers) are more and more coming out of the woodwork, and I think you may have a record for lyrics this year, maybe over the 500 you had one time. Look at all the under 10 post people!!! I bet it grows.

Herbie,
I don't think we'll come close to the 2002 numbers. We might pass the 2004 numbers though. Weird that the only category in the Music Awards not to expand is the Lyric Category. It cut in half the first year and so far this year is even lower than last time. The rest of the awards have grown exponentially in every category each time we've done them. The # of registered message boards posters has grown significantly as well.
The one good thing is that the folks who DO enter have a much higher chance of getting a nomination here and winning an award the other categories where we average a 1 in 5000 shot at winning something.

I think we're well ahead of the 2003/2004 pace. We didn't hit 200 posts until 30 days into the process. And there's always the rush of posts at the deadline. That's technically unnecessary because you can edit your entry right up until the deadline, right? ------------------ Marty my home Experience is that marvelous thing that enables you recognize a mistake when you make it again!

Marty,
Yes, folks can edit or even change their lyric anytime up until the deadline when we'll lock the post.
Some people are "jockeying" for position thinking there's an advantage to being on one page or another, but we change up the voting order etc.. to keep manipulation at a minimum and with the new voting system, being on a later page has no different advantage or disadvantage to being on an early page. Being at the top or middle or bottom also hasn't shown any advantage in previous years even though some folks theorized that it would.

I think the fact that placement of the lyrics on the page hasn't made a difference shows how conscientious folks have been in reading them before voting. People DO take the time to read (and re-read) all 50 lyrics on a page when making their selections. That is very cool! ------------------ Marty my home Experience is that marvelous thing that enables you recognize a mistake when you make it again!

Well, we're not even half way to the 2002.. but at least it won't shrink again this year and we have enough participation to consider doing it again in 2008. We'll announce it one more time in the newsletter which should bring in a hundred more so I expect we may hit 400 or more this year when all is done. Odd that in 2002 when we had less than half as many members, that we had so many entrants. Not sure where all those people went. It's actually easier to do this year than it was back then.

Even in 2002 - over half the lyrics entered were posted in the last week. We could still match it.

Herbie, the hardest thing you will do is try to pick your best lyric. I also liked mine last year, "Beelzebubba", one of my best songs and didn't make the finals. I guess the Devil scared people away. That song got a cut for me. so I guess it doesn't really matter if your lyric will make a decent song or not. It's what ever hits the reader's fancy when the judging starts. Good luck to all this year. Idamarie

Idamarie- I thought you had the BEST lyric on my page last time by FAR. Your lyric sang right off the page. I could picture every riff and rhythm. I can't believe you didn't make it.
Hey Brian- It's already on page 6, seems to me last time there were only 5 pages all together. If people are procrastinators like me, I think you're gonna be surprised by the number.

Hi guys...as a newbie to this post, I want to tell you this is the most fair and unbiased songwriting contest I've seen online yet. I've entered several (by mail) where you send a tape, you don't know who judges, and you usually have to pay pretty good money to enter each song.
Truthfully, I'd rather be judged "by a jury of my peers!" So good to know that people of every level are part of the process. I bet there's not a song on the charts right now that a seasoned song critic couldn't tear apart for one reason or another. The question is, how does a broader listening audience perceive the song's ability to touch, to move, to entertain?
So thanks, JPF, for a great opportunity. I'm already enjoying reading the many posts. Truly some talents in all shapes and sizes on here!

Thanks Lisa, we appreciate the support. We've worked hard to be an alternative to business as usual with most contests and awards programs. It's not easy to do all the work and bear all the expense and still not charge, but we know by removing financial incentive, that a lot of potential bias has been avoided. There's so much music outside of the mainstream that ALSO deserves attention, and we work hard to give that. We have nothing against other awards shows. Frankly, as long as they aren't corrupt, anything bringing positive attention to creative works is a good thing. We just felt our approach is totally different than anything else out there and in the case of this particular category, we also have to count on a little help from our friends to do it right.
Welcome to the group and good luck!

Ida Marie and Herbie,
I think this process gives all the participants a tiny understanding of what we go through in every category every year. Many times the songs we expect to win actually do. But sometimes a song we felt would be more likely to finish last will win. It's so unpredictable that we try not to stress over it and instead we just work hard to give as much diverse music quality attention and exposure as we can. Some of my favorite lyrics didn't make it out of the first round over the last 2 Lyric Awards either. Some lyrics I totally didn't connect to or like made it to the finals. You just never know. Since we see all the voting and all the results, we know the system is as fair and unbiased as humans can make something. Sometimes when something unexpected happens, it will help teach you something you obviously didn't know. Like how one song or lyric will appeal to the masses in ways another did not. You may not agree but you can't deny reality either.
Good luck to you both this year,
Brian

Ya Brian, Idamarie said it perfect --------------------------------------------- It's what ever hits the reader's fancy when the judging starts. --------------------------------------------- I'm not trying to deny, just trying to pick one that I wrote that somehow catches the eye of the people involved. I think I'm gonna put a more "message" lyric there this time and hope it moves somebody.

I agree, and with the type of 'reader' one encounters at this site, people will invariably test to see if they lend themselves to a musical beat. Of course without being able to hear the writer's 'vision'.

Manel,
We do have a gigantic number of categories for folks to submit their musical versions into! This is the only category out of over 150 that doesn't have music to back it up! = )

<Of course without being able to hear the writer's 'vision'.>
But I think that's one of the characteristics of a great lyric - upon reading you DO have a feel for the writer's vision. Yes, it is colored by your own, but with just the words their is a flow, and a rhythm. There's a feeling, a build, a climax and a release that suit the story line or topic. And it moves you, even without the music behind it.

Noticed when looking at some of the entries there are a few that include the links to web pages and sound samples - there weren't any instructions telling folks not to do this. Assume these will be deleted when the numbering is done? ------------------ Marty my home Experience is that marvelous thing that enables you recognize a mistake when you make it again!

So we have a week to go to enter the lyric awards. We're 110 lyrics away from the 2002 entries. Anyone think we'll catch that number? We have 10's of thousands of registered message board users alone that haven't entered (let alone the rest of the membership). Heck, we still have more than 110 regular posters who haven't entered, so it should be in reach.

Kaley,
Yes. You can switch it as many times as you want until the deadline, then it will be locked in. So you have a week to change your mind. I noticed a lot of the "first timers" have ©'s from 2002 or a bit later, which seems to indicate two things, one is perhaps this is their "contest" lyric, who knows how many have won other contests with said lyric, and two, I'm curious to know why in such a long period of time they haven't improved enough to post something newer? It's also fair to say the newbies have a more poetic style than what's generally seen around the JPF lyric forums, and I wonder if that intimadates some of the steadfast posters? Ok enough of my ramble...

Well, I think it's simply a case that we added 15K new members since the last Lyric awards, so a few hundred of them thought they'd get involved which is more than reason enough to do the lyric awards by itself. I think sometimes people forget that the only way for JPF to ultimately succeed is if we continue to find ways to get more people to come out of lurking status where they only read the newsletter or only send a CD in for the awards and start coming to Roadtrip events, start posting on the message boards, start attending local JPF chapter events and so on. If we could get hundreds more involved in a new lyric promotion every time, I'd do it weekly. Seriously.. this and the CD Baby gallery have been great tools to get new folks to take the first step of getting involved. I hope others can help think of even more ways to get new folks involved as well. I am open for suggestions.

I nudged a few JPF veterans to get involved who had never (or rarely) used the boards, but who were/are very active in the group in all other ways. That nudged the numbers some. = )

About the copyright being older. I wrote lyrics several years ago that were just now put to music and included in a cd that was just released. I would like to enter these lyrics and that's why they may seem outdated but I don't see anything in the rules that say it has to be a 2006 copyright. Am I correct on this? <font face="Verdana, Arial" size="2">Originally posted by sweetjoyce: I noticed a lot of the "first timers" have ©'s from 2002 or a bit later, which seems to indicate two things, one is perhaps this is their "contest" lyric, who knows how many have won other contests with said lyric, and two, I'm curious to know why in such a long period of time they haven't improved enough to post something newer? Dred,
Absolutely. We don't put any limits on what can be entered except that you can't enter the same thing more than 1 time. We have older songs, albums and videos also entered. Music doesn't have an expiration date like milk. Nor does lyrics etc. So any date is perfectly fine. Often new album releases also have older songs on them and Grammy winning songs could have been written years ago as well. They have rules about release dates (versus dates of creation) as does the Oscars. But the movie that won picture of the year in 2006 was actually finished in 2004.
So you're fine. I do think some folks write a handful of songs and then send those sames ones out year after year to contests. That's why we have the 1 rule about not re-entering the same thing more than once. People still try to do it, but we eliminate those when we find them.

Hi Folks,
So we're at least at the number where it would be tough to take just the top 5 lyrics on each page straight out because the reality is that we'll have 10-15 songs all tied up in 3rd, 4th or 5th on several pages so trying to take top 5 is nearly impossible. I am working on several scenarios on how to get from app 500 (plus last minute entries today) to 50 for round two. One is to simply take the highest "average" votes into consideration as tie breakers. (Since we won't have the same number of judges on every page because some people just won't bother to vote even though it costs them 6 points). Also we'll use the fact that you voted or didn't vote as a tie breaker (so if you don't vote, you're down 6 points, plus you lose the tie breaker.. so keep that in mind). I also think we'll have to consider really strong lyrics that finish 6th-10th on one page versus lyrics that finish 4 and 5 on a weaker page. We could use the numbers, but if a page has ALL strong lyrics, those will ALL have lower average scores than a page with all weak lyrics. I haven't read the pages, so I don't know if it applies, but since we won't likely be able to take a straight top 5 from each page because of ties, we migth as well work to get the very best lyrics we can into round 2. I will certainly take at least the top 3 to 4 from each page.. but that 5th spot might go to a different page if it makes sense. So just letting you all know that in advance. The idea is to recognize the best stuff, not just a forced numerical equation. If we could open voting to ALL the lyrics, we would, but there's just not enough time for everyone to read and screen 500+ lyrics. So the 1 page rule has to be in effect.
Any thoughts?
Brian

How about taking the top 4 from each page and then using a panel of judges willing to review all 500 to pick the last 10. If the panel's top 10 (or top 20) are all included in the top 5 from each page anyway, then you could revert back to using the top 5 from every page ... ------------------ Marty my home Experience is that marvelous thing that enables you recognize a mistake when you make it again!

Brian-
What about having a few (maybe 5-10) "Wild Card" songs that could be taken from any page. That way you can still have the top 5 from each page, regardless of how strong the grouping is and then use the wild cards for songs that were good, but just missed the cut because they were on a strong page.
I think it is fair to tie the voting to the tie-breaker. If you are willing to enter the contest, you should be willing to participate by voting for your favorites.

Chuck,
We need to keep the next round to 1 page of lyrics, which is a max of 50. It's easier for people to vote on and will improve the second round participation. Last time we had trouble getting anyone who didn't get nominated to vote, and found in some cases there was indication of people voting "party" lines (i.e. for their friends that made it to round 2). There's no way to prove one way or the other if that happened (i.e. they COULD have been their favorites) but the solution to bias is a large number of judges which overwhelm favoritism for the most part.
We have over 500 lyrics now, so at most we'll take the top 4 from each page and the last 10 will be wild cards. That's the best thing to do as I see it right now.

June 10th-June 30th, 2006: We will have voting by actual members on their 5 favorite lyrics (in order) from an assigned page via email once the posting/entry deadline passes. It sounds fair to me. If the distribution of songs on a page is random then what ever advantage or disadvantage a song gets from being on a strong or weak page is luck. Like the wind blowing during a golf tournement.
Possible idea for tiebreakers...
in the event of a point tie, the song with the most 1st place votes wins, it that's a tie, then most 2nd place votes, etc. The chances of 2 songs having the exact same mix of votes is much less than the chance of 2 songs having the same point total. If that's still a tie, the song that took the lead first with the earliest vote wins.

We will email all the participants after we get the posts cleaned up and numbered. We'll also post the instructions here for those who block our emails with their spam filters (which in this day and age is nearly inevitable).

Hi, two things.
Entries aren't randomized, in that pages are presented in chronological order. Who knows, there might be some factor favoring early (or late) submissions. Might there be some easy way to create new pages with the entry dates randomized? Maybe not a big deal at all, but worth contemplating.
Also, I submitted a lyric on 5-28. When I just looked at it on 6-05, I saw that all the apostrophes had somehow changed to babble characters since I last looked at my lyric in this forum. So without thinking, I edited the post to fix the apostrophes. Hopefully this late "edit" won't disqualify me!
Cheers, Hoagie

Brian, I thought that the thread for submitting new songs has been closed. Why are there new songs being entered? Is the thread open again? Some of my friends would like to submit their songs but thought the submission date was the 31st. Frank V.

The thread is open for several reason. First, so that a few people who had problem posts could re-post correctly. These include folks who had sent me lyrics directly via email instead of posting them. Throughout the entry period I re-directed many folks to post correctly, but when the deadline hit, I had to lock the post. So I gave them the same chance to post correctly that I gave everyone else. Also, it is open so that people missing lyric author, title and copyright info could correct it. We still have 21 lyrics missing title or author info that needs to be fixed for us to leave them included in the entries. As for the question about fixing stuff on your post, I don't mind if you do that while the post is open, but once posts are numbered, you can't change anything else or it will have to be deleted. We have to have a cut off so things can be judged.
As for early/late posting, since each page is judged individually in the first round against the other lyrics on that page, date of post doesnt' matter. It might affect if you posted with many other quality writers, but that could have happened on any given day. Also keep in mind that people who tried to post at the end of a relatively weak page might learn later that they posts have shifted because of duplicates or invalid posts and their strategy might backfire. We try to keep "strategy of position" irrelevent the best we can so that the only criteria being judged is the quality of your lyric.
That's the scoop. Once post #'s are included things are locked in. And without direct permission from me, any new posts will be deleted before we start. Of the 3 new posts, only 2 were authorized.

Hi Brian,
In the listing above, my entry, #438, "In the Great Desert of Brazil," is listed incorrectly, as "Lyrics by Astrud Gilberto Hoagie." Actually, I'm Hoagie Hill, sole writer. (I noted Astrid Gilberto just as a stylistic reference for the music.) Please correct this, or let me know who I should ask to do so.
Cheers, Hoagie Hill

Kaley,
That's just a glitch when I hand numbered all the posts. (Even that was a pain! hahah). So it shouldn't affect what you are doing. Thanks to everyone so far that is helping out. If we're all set today, I will send out the instructions and assign voting pages for everyone. Right on schedule!
Brian

Marty, thank you so much ...You are much faster than I....... best wishes...... Kaley P.S. will post this same post over on volunteers......in General

<font face="Verdana, Arial" size="2">Originally posted by Hoagie: Hi Brian,
In the listing above, my entry, #438, "In the Great Desert of Brazil," is listed incorrectly... Please correct this, or let me know who I should ask to do so. </font> You still have my lyric listed incorrectly -- now in both threads that contain the listing. The correct author of No. 438 is "Hoagie Hill" (me). Meanwhile, I see that my stylistic reference to Astrud Gilberto has been removed from the lyric itself. That's a shame. By analogy, if one wrote a sonnet and subtitled it "in the manner of William Blake," one would consider that an integral part of the work. Ideally my lyric should retain the subtitle, "Sung in the manner of Astrud Gilberto." -- Hoagie

Hoagie,
This database means nothing beyond being a tool so that you can find what page your lyric is on. That's why no one was rushing to correct it. It serves no other official purpose. Since you know where your lyric is located, it's served it's only needed purpose.
As for extra comments being removed: This is a lyric category. Lyrics are judged on their free standing merit. Some people added mp3 links.. some people gave background stories as to what it was about, others explained what motivated them and still others made references to the style of the lyric and music both. If we had allowed it, I bet someone would have posted a video for the song or impressionistic paintings inspired by it. None of that extra stuff is relevant. Let your lyric do the talking.
Those other things are beyond the scope of judging it for the merit of the lyric. Without opening it up for everyone to include background info and thus making reading the posts that much more difficult and time consuming, it's not fair to let a few have "extra" factors alone. If someone was influenced based on your stated influence or "in the style of" versus what lyric you actually wrote, that wouldn't be appropriate. If they wouldn't be swayed by it, then it served no purpose in the first place. Either way, it had to go.

Brian, I take your point that lyrics should be judged on their "free standing merit." Mp3s and such definitely represent a slippery slope.
But here's some food for thought. With respect to future contests, I would argue that the edge of that slope is further beyond what you would assume to be the purity of the lyric. By your take, even the many "V's" and "C's" that writers have inserted should not be allowed. These are performance directions -- not unlike "sung in the manner of." (The singer doesn't sing "V.")
At the same time, a lyric is itself an elaborate set of "performance directions," a map or recipe of what essentially exists to be sung. It's ultimate form is not text on paper. It is analogous to the printed notes in a musical score. If the contest were for printed music, would directions like "molto adagio" be disallowed?
Again, for future contests, I would appreciate being able to read directions like "in a bossa nova style," or "minor key, 6/8 time," for instance. Brief annotations like these -- categorically indistinguishable from "V" or "C" -- could help lift the text off of the page, while retaining the emphasis on the words and avoiding the slippery slope of mp3s and the like.
Ultimately it's a question of whether a lyric can be said to exist apart from its song. If it can, then maybe what you've got here is a poetry contest. ;-)
2 cents, Hoagie

Hoagie,
We've been doing the awards since 1999 and over 50,000 people have participated over the years (over 25K this year alone). You're one of the few people ever to have a problem with our format. But I am happy to explain where we're coming from. We have over 150 awards categories that we recognize this year. The only one that is solely for words is the Lyric category. For you to suggest that a posted lyric without extra direction and guidelines is a poem is bordering silly. Would a Lennon/McCartney song need the extra words such as "to be sung in a rock and roll format" or "inspired by Little Richard" for it to NOT be a poem? Obviously not. Nor is it the case here. There are certainly all types of lyrics entered. Some might be better suited as poems. But the obvious intent of all who entered is that they are song lyrics. Among the entrants this year, we have hit writers, Grammy nominees, many previous JPF award nominees and winners and a lot of seasoned pro's. We also have entry level folks taking a shot. That's one of the coolest things about what we do. Everyone gets a chance, famous or unknown, talented or just getting started. Your use of "Poem" appears to be derogatory. I think that's short sighted. And it's simply not accurate. Is your entry a poem because that line of text was removed? (Not to mention the reality most folks wouldn't know who Astrud Gilberto was in the first place. For those wondering, she's a famous figure in the Brazilian Bossa-Nova world). It even confused the volunteer to mistook your words to indicate that someone else contributed to the verses. That's distracting and un-needed. The point of having a consistent process is simply to be as fair as we can to everyone and make it as simple and straight forward to pull all this off using volunteers as we can.
If you wanted to present your work with musical and performance attributes, you should have submitted it as a recording and entered it along with the other 350,000 songs. (And perhaps you already have.. I don't know if you entered anything else or not). That way you can present your lyric with someone performing it in whatever style you please. And just for clarification, we don't allow additional material/info/bios/accomplishment etc.. to enter into the judging process for the music categories either. The music is judged directly on the merits of the recording. We have Grammy winners, #1 writers and hit major label artists mixed in to the entrants this year. Allowing extra info would likely allow for biases based on things not music related which defeats the entire point in our opinion. There are plenty of other awards that give out prizes to the famous or most popular.
Back to the lyric category, if we allow one addition, we must allow ANY addition to be fair. If we make judgement calls, you, ironically, are living proof that someone out there would cry foul. (Just as your suggestion that having the letter V or C crosses the line.. to me a ridiculous claim.. but it's a perfect illustration why allowing YOUR particular choice of an "extra" to enhance the perception of your lyric for voting purpose is unfair unless we allow all of them). Using a signifier for Verse or Chorus is a fairly universal part of most song structures. References to a famous Brazilian Bossa-Nova figure is not.
A great lyric doesn't need to be "in the style of" anyone to be a great lyric. In fact, just the opposite should be true. It should work GREAT in ANY style of music or performance. This year alone we received over a dozen different recordings of the Rolling Stones Paint It Black. From Bluegrass to Gothic/Industrial, to Country to Jazz to an interesting Dance version. The lyrics and in these cases melody as well, both worked in all formats.
So, I am sorry your disappointed in our process. We've been fairly successful in keeping everyone happy for the most part over the years, but I am sure now and then we'll simply not see eye to eye with someone.

Hi Brian,
Nothing derogatory intended, nor am I disappointed -- having only recently discovered this site and the contest(s), I'm delighted to see it happening. I just thought I'd point out what to me seems to be a curious discontinuity in the types extra-lyrical info that can be included. Since you appear to be conscientious and detail-oriented, I thought maybe you'd appreciate my perspective.
Cheers, Hoagie
