What did you all think of the Mic manufacturer picks in the member's choice survey? http://www.jpfolks.com/MemberPages/index.html Brian

Shure and Electrovoice are where it's at for live performance. For studio work, I use a Groove Tubes GT55...can't believe GT didn't make the list ------------------ Clif Johnston Clif@ClifJohnston.com http://www.ClifJohnston.com

I agree, I'm surprised GT didn't make it either. I have a GT MD1a that is my main workhorse. Though I'm now also going to look into adding some Sennheizer and Nuemans in the future.

I think since most people were thinking of live performance, the choices seem appropriate to me. Shure no doubt has sold more microphones than anyone in history. If it separated the brands out between studio and live, then I'd bet Neumann would rise to the top for studio use. ------------------ Larry www.audibleresponse.com

I'm with Larry. The choices should be separated into live and studio.....very different types are needed.
I think he's right too that the SM58 would be the best general live mic and that Neumann's would rise to the top of the studio picks
Maybe there should be a studio mic pick under $500 too since most of our members are into the home recording thing.... The Marshall mic company has an inxpensive line of large diaphram mics that sound really great for the price

Neumann in studio - yep! For live performance, I use either a Shure Beta 58 - that goes just about anywhere - or a CAD 95. In terms of clarity, I prefer the CAD, but it's not for use in every situation. It's a condenser mic, so tends to be very hot. It works really well with the high range of my voice - some other mics have tended to be muddy or "just not there" on the high end.
The CAD requires Phantom Power; the Shure Beta does not.
