I plug straight in to my computer, or whatever recording method when I play keyboard. Is MIDI that advanced to that method, and if so, how?
I use Windows software and I record using WAVE.

Any opinions on that, or advice on how I could make what I already use soundn better would be greatly appreciated.

Matt

Hi Matt! WE meet again!

OK, I like doing it like you do, (no midi). I find midi is limiting, as more sterile than going right to the wave.

For realism, I like to record the strings and horns with no EQ added. Everything straight up at 12 o'clock. If in the mix, I feel there could be a freqency fight between strings or whatever, I'll add some EQ to the tracks that will make them and the others have their own say.

Also, when I had my two keyboards, I used the none weithed one for the strngs and horns, and pictured the real players playing. That helped me get closer to how those instruments should sound. That might included closing my eyes when playing, or swaying, or however I pictured that string or horn player to be playing.

Your fingers should not be playing the notes as if playing a piano part. Your arms might have to be in a different position, as well as your fingers. BE THE PLAYER of whatever instrument you are trying to get. I di that for the drums too. I used to beat the crap out of keyboard when doing the drums. Or for a soft part, simulate the drummer's wrist and stick movements.

If you are feeling and imagining the real instrument with all the passion of a good player playing the real thing, in time, your body will follow along and get the results you're after. Feeling is eveything. There's a hundred levels of attack a key can be struck. I took some free advanced lessons for just that technique from a world known master of piano, (as I happened to tune his piano and he mentioned about that). I was blown away at his control and expression. I still strive for what he was trying to teach me. 100 volumes for one note! He actually had a device to measure the attack on the note. he said "play this note at 56 % volume". I laughed and then tried. I was at 35% or somewhere near that. He went right to it, and nailed it on 56%! Amazing!

Anyway, that will give you an idea of what I'm talking about, to have a feel for how a note or part should be played, and all the possibilities.....100 ways to play one note!

Hope this helps in any way,
John Daubert

Hi John. I have not moved away from WAVE because I don't want to lose that realistic quality of a software instruction program. Even though they all run off of instructions, I guess.

I would like to add horns sounds in my songs. The problem for me with that is, is it might sound tacky through my Casio. I am always trying to make the sounds on my synth sound more realistic until I can buy a real horn, or whatever the instrument may be.

I try to do orchestral stuff with my guitars, much like Jimmy Page did. I have not had a whole lot of success with it.

Thank you for your advice. I am going to see what I can do applying that to WAVE.

I apply the eq last with my songs. Maybe I should start looking at the parts I dub in individually.

Anyway, thanks again. And by the way, those pics you put in the Generals Forum were cool.

Matt

Just Plain Quotes
"A lot of people will tell you that preparation is what will make you successful. But I think that people misunderstand exactly what that means sometimes. The type of preparation you need most is the kind that allows you to instantly seize an opportunity, change your course based on a momentary circumstance, and grab hold of the totally unexpected when it happens, and allow it to take you for the ride of your life! That is the kind of preparation that can lead to the most enjoyable type of success." -Brian Austin Whitney
