All of my guitars have hardshell cases. When not in use I keep them in the case. I think you can buy polish from music stores if you wish to use a polish to clean the dust off. You can also use a damp paper towel. There are also guitar stands you can buy to sit a guitar on.

I'm afraid I can be of little help. I kinda like dings and scratches. My guitars look pretty ragged but sound nice.

Hmm. I was looking for advice, too. My Strat has nothing but a gig bag. It basically doesn't leave the house. I just have it standing next to the wall next to the mobile cabinet that holds the Tascam and CD burner. The only guitar that travels with me is my acoustic--and it has one of those airline-proof cases (tested on a real airline).

I'm curious if there's a stand or case preferred by any one over another?
I have nothing for my bass yet--I lean it carefully against the piano. I need to get something, just don't know what. I don't have wall space for it. I like looking at it, so am looking into a stand. Since I just got it a few months ago I am not good enough yet to TAKE it anywhere and play--LOL. (When I am, then I'll get a hard-shell or whatever it needs)

I store my guitars in hard shell cases when they are not being played. The bodies are protected and the necks are supported in a hard shell.Gig bags are better than the bed sheet method.
The acoustic electric that I play every day is on a guitar stand.

Most music stores carry them as well as other brands.

No. Although there are certainly anal-retentive folks who will swear that the one they use has some magical quality to it that not only protects their guitar but makes them a better musician and a better person.

Go buy one you can afford. The function of a stand is to hold the guitar so you don't have to lean it against the piano. That's about it. Any stand that will do that is fine.

Though I do have gig bags for a few instruments, I've always preferred solid cases. I'd get one - especially for an expensive instrument like a Gibson Les Paul. My 50th birthday is coming up in 3 years (minus two days) if you still feel generous.

I one built a beautiful double neck 12/6 mahogany and maple with turquoise bird inlays. Didn't have time to build a case for it, so it sat on the stage at the first gig it was used for. The stage was made of partition walls, and at the end of the gig, one of the walls fell on it - crushing the entire electronics cavity. The guitar had never been used again. If it was in a case, there would have been only minimal if any damage. Yeah, I guess you could say we brought the house down when we played - but it wasn't as exciting as Jericho. All the hours of craftmanship wasted for the lack of a case. Most everything now has a solid case or it stays home.

Get a solid stand - not a flimsy one. maybe even one with the little rubber thingy or clamp that holds the guitar/instrument securely.
Only once in 30 years of playing have I ever had an instrument fall out of the stand. Playing on a flatbed truck outside when a gust of wind hit my Guild D-25 and sent it sailing. Put a gash in the guitar, but not as bad as Willie Nelson's. Truman would have liked it. :-)
Currently, I play a lot of instruments and swap them throughout performances. Often times the guitar cable will catch on the guitar body support arm of the stand as I move. I notice it with A-frame style stands moreso than the other type. I've had the A-frames "close up" a bit because the cable pulls at them. and then they are a bit wobbly. Gotta often kick them open before putting the guitar down, or they could tip over.

Yep! I would get a hard shell case for the LP. There are some pretty cheap hard shells that are specifically designed for LP's. Another word of caution about cases, always close the latches. I witnessed someone moving a 335 for a friend and the case popped open and the guitar landed on a concrete floor, face down. They couldn't get it to play that night. Nuff said.
As far as stands go, the tubular type are pretty sturdy and sometimes on sale for $10.
