My guitar straps creak sometimes, pretty annoying during live recording! I have classicals plus a steel-string - they all have pickups on the butt end and posts at the neck junctions for attaching.

I'm pretty sure the creaky part is the leather. Anyone else have this problem, or even better, a fix? I haven't seen a leatherless type ...

Bruce, If you're happy with the straps you use, why not consider "waxing" them with some saddle wax the "Horse Folks" use. Wax it, roll it up (both ways) and break it in, this shouldn't be a problem. If not, go to a nylon mesh type of strap. Good Luck, TJ Sullivan
PS Also, Check out your connectors, are you using Straplox or what? Maybe consider lubricating them.

TJ,
Does waxing lend to the strap slipping right off the post? Do you get waxy goo on the guitar?

What's a straplox?

Thanks.

This is a good topic. Yes, my straps creak too, and I really worry when I am recording. I will try waxing - or will vaseline work just as well?

Are all these straps new and not yet broken in? I think I remember my strap with leather ends doing that when it was new, but it stopped after I had used it a lot. I have a cutaway, so I leave the end attached to the heel of the neck and then curl it up in the cutaway part. The other end is the one that used to sqeak a little. It's easier to put on now but I worry about it coming off when I don't have my cable plugged into it.

Both not-quite-new and old straps are creaking for me.

You know Bruce, if the strap issue is that much of a problem, take it off and sit on down with the guitar. I'm not really sure where your squeak is coming from. That would help if I knew. Straplocks are little devices installed on the end of your straps to prevent them from becoming disconnected from your guitar. They're available from most music stores manufactured by several companies. Please feel free to contact me regarding this issue. It really shouldn't be a problem and I'm not familiar with this problem. TJ

Bruce, I'm thinking about this and Check to see if your strap "nuts" are tight. Maybe if they are loose(I mean just a little) they are creating this unwanted noise. TJ
If you can turn them without being tight to the body of the guitar, they might create a noise. This can be fixed by tightening the screw inside the strap nut.

I try to stand for live shows - not a big deal, but it makes for better view for the audience, plus keeps it more dynamic. Plus now that I'm used to it, it's kind of fun.

The creak isn't a nasty problem, just an irritant. I'll take a peek at straplocks though, next time I'm at the store.

Okay, I can't resist. In answer to your suggestion: Yes, my nuts are tight. But come on, I just went swimming!!

JT, Matter of fact, I think it is a very tight fit. I don't dare make it bigger though - I'd hate for it to slip off. I'll be checking out the straplock thingy, maybe the combination will fix all!
