Okay here's a new topic. I'm not interested in the best and ultimate guitars, I'm talking about the pawn-shop specials that sound like nothing else. What do you have, cherish, and/or use?

One of my favorites was given to me by a guy that found it in a trash can on his way to work. It was an amalgamation of assorted parts that someone tried to put together and fruitlessly failed. It had a black fleck silvertone body, a short-scale International(?) neck, and weird metallic pickups that were fitted by drilling holes in a line out of the masonite top and installing them poorly. I got it working by adding tuners from a Fender Mustang, and pots from an old Gibson SG - keeping the original weird pickups. I also added a phase switch, which made the two wacko pickups sound like a strangled dobro.
This became the guitar I used when I worked at ENSONIQ as a beta tester for their DP/4 effects processor, and many of the guitar presets in the final product were created using this very guitar! The "code name" in development for the DP/4 was "Quaker" so the guitar was officially labelled as the ENSONIQ Quakercaster - the ONLY official ENSONIQ guitar ever built.

I try to be creative, and everyone wants to be a comedian, hence the cheesy responses.

Sorry, just thought I'd add a little whine to the cheese.

In the 1940's my grandfather made parlor guitars and violins in small numbers. I have two of his violins and one of his parlor guitars which I love. The guitar is not fancy and it wouldn't attract attention in a pawn shop or antique store. I don't perform with the guitar, as it never leaves the house, but I do play it quite a bit. It gives something special to the music and I wouldn't trade it for a million bucks.

Does anybody remember those old ovation electric guitars -- can't remember the model, but the top was cut to look like a shark fin and you could reach a full two octaves easily Well, I had two of them. TWO of them! Bought them at a flea market for (pardon the pun) a song.

When I took them home I went through the cases and found $100 tucked into an empty string package. My dad made me take the money back. You know, I have NO idea what happened to those guitars. That's scary. Now I know I'm getting old.

That Ovation was endorsed by Glen Campbell, might have been called a Viper or Predator, something like that. As for Cheese guitars I've ended up with a Kay Speed Demon, a Harmony Patrician (not a bad guitar) a Silvertone which must be played through the Amp Case, a Magnatone double neck (two eight string) Steel, a Macaferri Plastic archtop and a Teisco three pick up electric all in the quest for the David Lindlley vibe. I have discovered that no matter how badly any of these guitars play, they all become instant cool slide guitars. The pick ups seem to get that "cheesy" overdriven tone easily. Oh yes I found a Supro 3/4 scale guitar which works well in that contrext as well. Best Regards, TJ Sullivan

Lindley has been one of my heroes for years. He's inspired me to collect, play (and build) numerous instruments. During his last concert in the Philly area he stopped during his first set to point out how cool my polyester shirt looked. Had a fun chat with him afterwards. Gotta love a musician that doesn't have an ego problem.

Tom, That's very Cheesy! I had an opportunity to work with Jorge Calderon (bassist, producer and great writer) for about a year or so. He was in El Rayo X. It made me more appreciative of David's talents than ever. That band was GREAT! Glad to see some Lindley fans on the board.
Best Regards, TJ Sullivan
