It's time to share your secret guitar tips that have nothing to do with actual playing. Things like guitar storage, travel, maintenence, etc.
Here's an old one: to protect the back of your guitar from belt-buckle and button scratches, always carry a few Kotex Mani-Pads in your guitar case. Just stick one on the back of your guitar before the gig and throw it away after.

I scratched a friend's Martin thirty years ago. Since that day I started wearing my belt buckle off to the left side. ------------------ Mike Dunbar Music
You've got to know your limitations. I don't know what your limitations are. I found out what mine were when I was twelve. I found out that there weren't too many limitations, if I did it my way. -Johnny Cash It's only music. -niteshift Mike Dunbar Music

I had a custom guitar made for me, and I scratched it on the very first hour. An expensive learning experience. Now I take my belt off. ------------------ Having Fun!!!! http://www.mp3.com/stan_loh

OK, I store many guitars in a room at my house and became aware of the humidity issue. Most companies recommend 45% relative humidity and 75 degrees or so in the room. I have started to keep homeade humidifiers in cases for guitars that don't live in "The Chamber" by driling a few holes into plastic soap dishes and keeping a moist sponge with distilled water to maintain the relative "H" factor in the cases. It's worked very well for the past few years. Throw a rubber band around it, and there you go! These old wooden beasts can be very suspect to changes in weather depending where you live. Best Regards, TJ Sullivan

I pretty much use my guitars and beat them up. The one thing I don't do is lean my guitar up against the backside of the next. I always lean it against the strings. I'll scratch and dent the body, but never the neck. Go figure. Jody www.jodywhitesides.com

Hey Songman, What a great idea! And here I thought I had to spend the big bucks to get those hose-type humidifiers for each acoustic instrument. I can pick up all the supplies I need at the local dollar store. Thanks again

I'm in the Beat-em Club, too. Not intentionally, but - well, here's my best Non Technical Guitar Tip:
Stash all cases under the bed. Not only will this will allow for less dust to accumulate down there, it'll keep the guitars as handy as possible. Hang em on the wall of your favorite room, an easy impulse grab.
Have a nice beater good for the trunk or strapping on the back of the motorcycle, no case nec.
I got a Taylor this year, first-ever steel string, high-falutin and man it sounds sweet as hell. Decided right away not to baby it from dings or anything nonfunctional that'll keep me from playing as often or thrashy as I want.
Mmm, on more thing: Hercules guitar stand. I just got it and it suits perfectly. Holds three guitars, LOCKS them in place, and only takes one hand to grab or park the guitar in it. It's a sturdy one-piece that folds small, a little ugly but cool.
