Hi Everyone!

A new forum [Linked Image] Wow!! I thought I’d kick this one off with two questions:

1. What is your main electric guitar?

2. If money was no object, what’s next on your shopping list?

Like many of you I have more than one guitar but my main one is my Gibson Les Paul Special (cherry red) – although to look at it’s not unlike an SG

I’ve had my eye on a Fender Nashville Tele for sometime, if anyone has one of these I would be interested to hear what you think of it.

Cheers

I have a "near" Nashville Tele. It's a custom-shop tele. The main difference is that it has a Texas Strat pickup in the neck position instead of a regular Tele pickup.

I use it a lot on my country tunes. It's also pretty good for funk/R&B. I just had it re-fretted and now it stays in tune! [Linked Image]

I don't know if I have a "main" axe. I have 8.

1. LP Custom 1972 black beauty; my first really pro guitar; I bought it brand new and will never part with it. The smoothest sustain and tone of anything I have.
2. Strat - custom shop. similar to Eric Clapton model except for the neck shape; Lace Sensor p/u's
3. custom shop Tele - Nashville-like
4. Custom strat w/EMG's and a scalloped neck; also has a Roland pitch-to-midi controller installed
5. Guild - D35 dreadnought c.1976
6. Ovation - Balladeer (c. 1982); deep body
7. Kono model 20 - nylon string classical; my most expensive guitar
8. Gibson ES-175T (thin - abt 3 1/2"); great for jazz or rockabilly

(9). if you count my Fender Jazz Bass.

I really need to add a Martin or Taylor.

Since I'm always switching guitars, I don't think I have a main one. I find that each guitar inspires me to play a little differently and I go through cycles. Right now, I'm using my custom-shop Strat a lot and my Nashville Tele.

How do Nige,
My main gig electric guitar is a Les Paul standard. She's my baby, not for her sound but, because of her playability. She makes me almost fast. But, since I don't gig much these days, she mostly lives in her case. The electric guitar that I play the most is an old Telecaster that has 3 pickups (Tele bridge pickup with Strat middle and neck pickups) which may qualify her as a Nashville Tele. She's not as soft to the touch as the LP but she makes a wider variation of sounds. I play them both through a Mesa Boogie Mark IIc with no effects and they both sound sweet.
I know that this was an electric guitar post but I'm having too much fun to stop now.
Since I don't gig much these days (I'm in construction and find it hard to stay awake past 10P.M.)I mostly sit in my living room or on the porch and finger-pick my acoustic guitars.
My main gig (coffee house, lounge, recording, and open mike) guitar is a 1969 Gibson J-45. She doesn't look like most J-45s because she has square shoulders like the Hummingbird. She has a "Hot Spot" like transducer in her bridge (I don't have to mike her at gigs) and plays almost as softly as my LP.
The guitar that I play the most is a Yamaha F-410 that my sweetie bought me so I could take a guitar to the beach, camping, etc. without worrying about damaging thousands of dollars. She doesn't have the bass response of the J-45 but is bright and WILL be heard.
This is my life in a guitar case.
Thanks for the opportunity to share my story or brag(?) or whatever I just did.
Don't work too hard,
Bill

Man, all these new forums...is it Christmas already?

I play my own brand of jazz and blues using an Ibanez AS80 through a Polytone Mini-Brute II...and that's it folks.

My main guitars are made by Joe's Guitars. I have 2 7-strings from them, plus a 6 string. They're out of Utah and make really nice custom stuff.

Money no object I'd get a "high-end" taylor acoustic. I really dig their guitars. I did recently get one, the 615ce. But I'd love to have several more, including a 12 string.

Well, my main (and by main, I mean only) electric guitar is a Mexican Fender Strat, which is fine because I don't actually have a band right now. When (if) I do, I'll probably want to get a Fender Jazzmaster as my main gig guitar, because of it's lighter weight and greater range of tonal variation.

The above is neither a pop-song, nor something to be sung by anyone other than myself. Homey don't play dat.

Hi everyone

I thought I might be pushing my luck asking guitarists to name just one guitar [Linked Image] Bill is quite right though, once you get on a roll talking about guitars it’s hard to stop. I also agree with Larry (I’m very agreeable this morning [Linked Image]) that different guitars inspire in different ways.

I have two acoustics: Takamine EN10C and a round back Kaman Applause. The Kaman is the one I usually have out of it’s case all the time at home, so that makes it my main ‘writing’ guitar. The Taki has a great bottom end and the pre-amp’s pretty good too.

Moving on to the Nashville Tele. I tried one last month in Nashville (Hey! [Linked Image] where else!), it had a ‘B’ string bender incorporated in the strap hook. I had not come across this before, but it was great fun to play. I like the variety of tones offered by the Nash Tele. I can feel my credit card beginning to flex a bit!!

Clif, Jody, Bloodcookie thanks for sharing.

Keep ‘em coming!

My main squeeze is my ever trusty Les Paul, solid black, white trimings, big block mother of pearl inlays.Plays like a Porsche drives, and has curves most of my ex-girlfriends and wife envy.Accusticaly, there is this wonderfull peice of wood thats been a controlling part of my life for 24+years,my sweety and most of my freinds call her my wife, and understand that nobody comes between us,let alone touch her.Actually it's a Takamine classical, has no markings, not even 3rd,4th,5th,ect,dots on the fret board. The only markings are the standard paper inside the sound hole, has who made it,serial number, and has the year and date it was made stamped on the brace towards the bridge.I have been offered rediculis amounts of money for it,but I say NAY SIR,unhand my fair bride.

G'day, folks!

I have several guitars, but my two main guitars I use almost all the time ar an american standard Strat, set up like Claptons, and black(ie) in color, with fender noiseless p'ups, and my ESP MV-200 with a SD li'l 59er in the bridge and an SH-4 in the neck. Together, these guitars provide a full tonal spectrum from dark and moody to tough and twangy.

If money were no object, I might add a PRS CE-22 lefty (yes, I'm one of those...) and a Gibson Les Paul Black Beauty (like Frampton) to the fold.

I use a Taylor 315CE Lefty and a Fender DG-31 LH for acoustic sounds -- I don't think there can be any improvement there -- I'm quite happy with them.

Thanks for asking!

I usually record and gig with three guitars...

My main acoustic (for my Neil Young-type stuff) is a 1982 Taylor 815 Jumbo without the cutout. Very little high end on it but it booms open chords and fingerpicking.

The main electric is a '99 Epiphone Casino and my electric reserved for really dirty songs is a Wine Red '94 Les Paul Studio.
My two electrics give me totally different sounds and that's the reason I bring both.

Because this is a writing forum first and foremost, I also feel compelled to add that I do most of my writing on the Taylor or a $140 dollar epiphone acoustic. PR-315, I think.

hi...well for years i used a takamine acoustic/elcetric when i played out but was never satisfied with the sound in the studio...then i discovered taylor...i have 25th anniversity 414rce...this guitar is awesome in the studio for recording...i now use it playing out as well...never disappoints...since 1970 my electric rig was an american strat...loved the playability but was never quite happy with the tone ...several years ago i heard a texas guitar player named bugs henderson play a prs...that did it...the tone i'd been looking for...so i bought a prs ce-22 and i'm now in tone heaven...great guitars...my next purchase maybe the strat computer model compatiable with roland for computer recording another step into the cyber world...i go reluctantly but being an analog studio rat it's a leap of faith in the direction it apprears to be heading...trush48

Argh - I've been wanting to learn electric guitar forever, been playing acoustic for years and years. So I go visit family in Las Vegas and buy a cheap Epiphone Studio Les Paul at Mars Music a couple months ago.

It's cute, I like the way it feels, but the low E won't stay in tune and the string wobbles and wobbles before settling in. The other strings DON'T do that and I know it's not right. Can't be.

I took into a local shop and the guy told me to just not strum it too hard.

Oh c'mon... don't strum an electric guitar too hard???

Any suggestions? I can't take it back because I actually don't live in Las Vegas so I'm stuck with it.

Think new tuners would help? Should I sink the money into it?

Any feedback is much appreciated ~

Hi Mitchelle

Nice to hear that you’ve got yourself an electric. Those Epiphone Les Pauls are really nice.

With regards to your bottom ‘E’. There could be a number of reasons for this and I expect people on this board will have many ideas/suggestions. So in order to get maximum interest, I’ll create another topic. [See – Problem keeping in tune]

Cheers

I have always favored the Strat, for the same reasons all Strat lovers do, Jimi Hendrix, Robin Trower, Martin Barr, Buddy Holly (well, not REALLY Buddy Holly, but he was one of the first to make it famous!) I have an '83 Squire Strat, customized with a Kahler Locking Tremelo bridge. The pickups are 2 '83 Strat pickups in the neck and middle positions, a DiMarzio Super Distortion SDS-3 in the bridge slot. This is the guitar I use for Rock leads, and heavy chording. My second guitar is a Strat also, but not Fender. Mine was originally built by Dennis Meredith in 1979 as one of 2 prototypes (the other was a neck-through Strat). This guitar has a Boogie body, Schecter neck with Schaler pre-CBS style tuning keys, Jumbo frets, ivory nut and brass bridge saddles (no tremelo). The pickups are a DiMarzio Humbucking at the neck, a pre-CBS Strat pickup in the middle and a Seymour Duncan HotRails "Neck-Position" pickup loaded into the Bridge slot. They are controlled by 4 toggle switches allowing for splitting the humbucking pickups into single, parallel and serial configurations that give the guitar 15 different pickup configurations, so I always have a tone just right for the the song at a flick of a switch. She is a soulful Blues-Rock guitar through and through, my "Main Guitar", twice as heavy as the Rock Strat, and a Blues lead-solo SUSTAIN MONSTER!!! I play through a Fender Power Chorus, 130 watts stereo, with 2 12" Fender Speakers in the amp, and 2 Genz-Benz Slanted Cabs loaded with Celestion 12" speakers out to either side for a better stereo sound. So far, the only thing I can think of that's next is re-fretting these guitars, as I am not big on having a huge inventory. I played 15 or more Stratocasters in 1983 before settling on the one I bought, and "Alethea" (the Blues-Rock custom Strat) was MADE for me. The necks are different from each other, a "V" neck on the Rock Strat, and a "D" neck on the Blues Strat. I have no problem going from one to the other between songs, even though the guitars each demand a different playing style to achieve their best delivery.

Have your tech check the nut string depth, and the bridge saddle, for that low E string. I can think of no other reason for your problem, unless you are not tuning the guitar all the way up to true A440. Those are the only 2 things I have seen in 30 plus years to cause that.

Oh c'mon... don't strum an electric guitar too hard???

Any suggestions? I can't take it back because I actually don't live in Las Vegas so I'm stuck with it.

Think new tuners would help? Should I sink the money into it?

Any feedback is much appreciated ~
Mitchelle

Hi Nigel, I currently have "many" guitars in the stable. It's just accumulated over the years from learning and playing various styles. I have to say that Leo Fenders' basic design on electric guitars back in the 40's has been a timeless design. The Telecaster guitar in all it's simplicity still provides a great deal of versitility and depth. There's really no music you can't play on a Tele. I have three set up for various applications. I also favor the Gibson ES 175 for it's versatility. I mean guys that range from Steve Howe of Yes to Joe Pass have demonstrated how far you can push the guitar to it's limits. I like Srats for that "in between" the pick-up sound. The Mexican Jimmie Vaughn model has a unique wiring situation in the "middle" position which features "no tone" adjustment, but screams on lead tracks. A very affordable axe which is also very well made, that factory in Mexico is turning out some really nice stuff. I do use a couple of Strats now and then, There's a 64' Jazzmaster I came across that's a very comfortable guitar I use now and then as well. I also developed an interest for Pawn shop Specials, ie: Silvertones, Kays, and Harmonys. Might be because it brings me back some great old memories. Most of these guitars all posess a certain personality and sound of their own. I've also come to find that no matter what "Dogs" some of them might be as players, they always sound great cranked up through a tube amp while playing slide. David Lindley has demonstrated this to all of us over the years. Thanks for a cool post. Best Regards, TJ Sullivan, Sunland Ca.

Sorry! But I must add that the new Burns Steer model is a must "check out" on my shopping list. Got a Guitar Player' Editor's Pick rating recently and is just so UGLY, it must sound or play great! See Ya' TJ

Being a folky-kinda guy, I've only got one "plank"...a really decent Fender Telecaster.

It's all I need! [Linked Image]

I too, have many guitars - - and many other bizarre instruments, but I could never find an electric guitar that offered everything I wanted, so I made my own. It's a 25" scale length, carved out of oak and basswood, painted turquoise. It looks similar to the old Valco "map shaped" guitars which are too expensive to buy anymore, and I've installed a Kahler vibrato, a Dimarzio PAF in the neck, fat strat single coil(I think) in the middle and another older Dimarzio Dual pickup in the lead. It also has a Roland MIDI controller built in, with on/off & in/out phase switches for each pickup, and a blue cube distortion built into the tone knob. It plays like butter, and looks smokin'!

oh, and if money was no object, I'd get a Knutsen harp guitar (in working condition) and a Dumble amp.

My main electric is a 1978 Gibson Artisan. It was a limited edition Les Paul with a few more bells and whistles than the standard model. Three pickups, gold plated, fancy pearl inlays. I bought it new when I was just sixteen.

If I had all the money in the world, the Artisan would still be my main electric. I also have a rebuilt 1964 Fender Mustang which I'm using with more frequency as I get older. Strapping 40 pounds of Gibson over your shoulder for four hours a night is a young man's work. [Linked Image]

I pulled out a 64' Jazzmaster that I've had forever for my Blues gig for the last three weeks and I can't believe how many positive comments I've gotten. It just goes to show you. I mean I noticed Magic Slim (and the TearDrops) and he was raving about his Jazzmaster and I thought maybe I should give it a whack, and you know the funny circuitry on that guitar and all, but I've managed to get a great Blues tone with that throught a 60's Deluxe Reverb sometimes employing a Texas Tone via a Dan Electro Daddy-O pedal (cheap but effective) and sometimes a bit of echo for the Rockabilly stuff. I've been in heaven. I have some old video of Joe Pass playing one on a Vestapol video and several surf guitarists have played them as well. That and the Jaguar are two unsung cool guitar designs from the Leo Fender catalog. Check em' out! Best Regards, T.J. Sullivan

For electrics, I use a Fender Squire Strat that belongs to a songwriter friend of mine, I keep it at my studio and plug it straight into an Alesis midiverb. I use it on demos and actually used it on a master once (I don't normally pretend to be a session quality electric player.)

I have a '72 Tele out on permanent loan with a friend's son, and a Peavey T 60 here at home.

In the past I've had Strats, a Broadcaster, a guild archtop, and a Gibson Les Paul Jr. I've foolishly sold them all.

For acoustics, I have a '68 Yamaha FG 150, a Yamaha 12 string, a Cort solidbody accoustic/electric, a Gretsch acoustic, and an old Alvarez classical.

I also have several basses, but that's for another board.

If I had unlimited money, I'd get an old strat, an old Les Paul, and some old archtop (hey, I'm an old guy!)

Hey Mike,
I'd tend to agree - where older is better. But there are a lot of good guitars being made these days, like Paul Reed Smiths for example. The problem is, no one makes those weird guitars anymore with the vegematic buttons, alien body designs and crazy embellishments like the Goya Rangemasters, Teisco Del Rays, Silvertones, Airlines, etc. While there are some retro guitars being made, typically they (tonally) miss the boat on the cheese factor.

My main electric is a 2001 Godin Radiator.
My next purchase was the Takemine Bruce Springsteen model acoustic/electric. But I am quickly rethinking on using the 1962 ES335 (it really is 40 yrs young just like me) I just inherited from my dad. I remember him playing it as a child and I will carry on the tradition... [Linked Image]

Hi all

As you will see from my original post I was thinking about buying a Nashville Tele, well I took the plunge!! (Hey! No one can accuse me of rushing in to things) Once I’d decided to buy one the thing that took the time was deciding which colour [Linked Image] Anyway, black it is – I might change that tortoise shell scratch plate though. It’s the Tex-Mex model and sound is great with an impressive variety of tones, I’m really pleased with it. I’ve just got to learn how to play it now [Linked Image]

Happy New Year to you all

Hi Larry

No I didn’t get the ‘B’ bender version in the end. You only get that option with the American version, and that’s double the price [Linked Image]

My main electric is a 1984 Heritage Les Paul style. I believe it's a model CM140 which is a rather thin body goldtop. For those who haven't heard of Heritage guitars, I believe it's the old Gibson plant, with some of the Gibson old timers who didn't want to relocate to Nashville when Gibson built the new plant. I really love this guitar!

I also have a Gibson Les Paul Studio, transparent teal, which has a lovely rich cafe-au-lait tone and plays beautifully, but I actually prefer the Heritage, the tone is roudier, and each note is much more discrete when playing a chord with more than a couple of notes, esp with some distortion.

Have two more: a 1964 Epiphone Coronet with a P-90 pickup(bought cir.1973 for $65) and an oddball ESP F200 baritone, which is a blast to play when you need a new thing to inspire you. But my real baby is my Taylor 710CE.
What's next? Not sure; maybe a Gibson SG-I kind of like the looks/price tag of those 'faded SGs', or maybe a walk on the Strat side...

As it stands now I almost exclusively only play the Martin D35 - I only grab the electrics to add, well, electric parts to songs - anyone wanna trade my marshall halfstack for a pedal steel? [Linked Image]

Hey Nige!

The electrics stack up like this:

1) 1980 US Fender Stratocaster with Bill Lawrence pickups

2) 1979 Gibson "The Paul" (kind of like a dining room table cut into a Les Paul..)

3) 1976 Limited Edition Gibson Explorer

I'm hoping to get an Anderson sometime soon. I really like the way they play...

My only electric: Hagstrom Swede (1970's)
If I had more money, I'd sell the Hagstrom and get a scrumptious PRS with the single cut-away.

Well, I'm picking up a new 6-string for myself in the next two weeks. It's a "diner" series guitar by Joe's Guitars out of Utah. http://www.joesguitars.net

I'm getting it loaded with a Seymour Duncan custom humbucker (for the style of music that I'm doing).

It's a really unique thought for a guitar.

I've got a Takamine "eclectric" (acoustic/electric) that I use most of the time.

But for songs with those #*!#* barre chords that I can't seem to hold down very well on an acoustic (much like hot tea when I've got the flu), I use a Hamer I lovingly call "Big Red." (Now THAT's a guitar I can play "Drivin' Naked" on!)

The Hamer was an "impulse buy/consolation purchase": My hubby was buying his Rickenbacker bass for an early Father's Day present and we saw the day's sale price on the Hamer AND, since Mother's Day had just recently hit...I came home with a present, too!

Unfortunately, it doesn't like to stay in tune...

...so I just sing louder...

My next electric--whatever it turns out to be--will stay in tune and play itself. I'm just gonna' "finger-sync"...I'll go with a "stunt guitarist" behind the curtain while I do one of those "Singin' in the Rain" fake-outs...

Steer clear of the Nashville Tele unless it has a rosewood fretboard. As far as country style playing, I recommend a two pickup American standard with a rosewood freboard or a 60's tele. The switch configuration on a two pickup Tele is Bridge/Neck/Neck with capicator. For country or blues use neck with capicator.

Hye Nige,
Glad to hear you made a plunge into somethin' you were salivating for! (Even if a small "settlement" for a different model.)
I've only got one electric: a early '70's Teisco Del Rey; truly a piece of Japanese cheese. [Linked Image] It gets one basic tone, a cool bluesy gut-grit that I enjoy a lot.
I don't "deserve" another electric, but if I had me d'ruthers, I'd really like a Les Paul Junior some day. I used to "swap off" playing one (between the bass and that) in a band years ago, and I dearly loved the bawdy crank of it. We had it set up with medium [bronze] acoustic strings and it was an out-and-out brawler! Talk about fat tone; it was the very definition of that phrase...
Guess I should just get me an Epi copy of that ilk and be happy, eh? (Don't think I can really afford a vintage version of the real thang any more.)

I'm a longtime strat man...I love the feel of them and the sound. I'm currently using two Mexican standards, a sunburst and a black one, and I have a white Squier I picked up for $90 in a pawnshop which I keep tuned to open G. Love 'em.
Peace, Doc

Yeah. I see someone other than me plays a Teisco. I have a 1968 triple pick up one I bought new in 68. Not that I play well but I seem to play bettre on that one than anything else.
Just had to chime in seeing I'm not the last surviving Teisco owner in the world.
Also had a Tiesco valve amp until recently. Couldn't get valves for it nad a restorer offered me more than it cost me to replace it so did.
New amp does not wail half as good as I recall the tiesco did.

My Buddy Guy Strat w/Lace Sensor pickups and Dean Markley string just oooooozes tone and has incredible sustain for blues work, is as twanggy as any Tele I've ever heard/played, and can rock out LOUD through my "little" Blues Jr amp with Weber speaker. A real monster/lover of a guitar!

My wish list? An original '52 Butterscotch Tele -- Who would not fall in love with that look and sound!

I have an original 1966 Telecaster. I like simple guitars with no frills and an old Telecaster is about as stripped down as it gets.

If I had the money, I would look for an original Esquire or Nocaster.

While I am a Fender Fan, I do like the looks of a Cherry Red Gibson ES-335. Very Classic looks.

Electrics (in order of times I pick 'em up to play):

Reverend Slingshot (two P-90s)
Fender Stratocaster (three single-coils)
Epiphone ES-422T (hollow-body single P-90)
Stella solidbody (two singles)
Teisco Del Rey (two singles)
... and a Brownsville Choirboy 12-string.

Acoustics, same order:

Running Dog jumbo concert model
Martin D-28
Martin 0-18
Yamaha 12-string (I forget the model number)
Epiphone Zenith archtop
Gibson B-25-12
Sterling resonator guitar (National O copy)
Harmony Sovereign
Hofner classical guitar

Banjos (5-string):

Gibson Model 1 (1925 conversion*)
B&D Silver Belle (1920s conversion*)
English fretless
S.S. Stewart (don't remember the model)

Plus a Gibson mandolin, a Harmony mandolin, a Vega banjo-mandolin, a GoldTone guitar-banjo, a Regal dobro, and a bunch of harmonicas. I have autoharps, a dulcimer and fiddle, too, but am rusty at those, so they don't "count."

I forgot two nice ukuleles, and shouldn't have forgotten the jews harps, either.
